We consider a distributed source coding system in which several observations must be encoded separately and communicated to the decoder by using limited transmission rate. We introduce a robust distributed coding scheme which flexibly trades off between system robustness and compression efficiency. The optimality of this coding scheme is proved for various special cases.

A new scheme for sinusoidal audio coding named multiple description spherical trellis-coded quantization is proposed and analytic expressions for the point densities and expected distortion of the quantizers are derived based on a high-resolution assumption. The proposed quantizers are of variable dimensions meaning that any number of sinusoids can be quantized jointly for each audio segment whereby a lower distortion is achieved compared to previously published scalar spherical quantizers. The quantizers;are designed to minimize a perceptual distortion measure subject to an entropy constraint for a given packet-loss probability. In experiments, the performance of the quantizers is assessed and compared to the corresponding single description spherical quantizer and associated bounds under various conditions and is found to increase robustness towards packet-loss.

This paper addresses the use of adaptive modulation in progressive image transmission with multiple description coding in conjunction with an Orthogonal Frequency Division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Specifically, two adaptive systems are considered: variable rate with fixed power, and variable rate with variable power. An algorithm is proposed to allocate power and constellation size at each subchannel by maximizing the throughput. Simulation results confirm that cross-layer optimization with adaptive modulation enhances system performance.

Packets carrying real-time speech data may be lost during transmission over unreliable networks. This loss can lead to considerable degradation of speech quality. In this paper, we propose a new distributed subframe interleaving scheme for multiple description speech coding to avoid repeat transmission and ensure acceptable speech quality when packet loss occurs. With introducing distributed subframe interleaving operated on two adjacent speech frames, the proposed scheme creates two correlative descriptions, each offers an acceptable quality and can be partially restored from the other. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by the objective speech quality measurement PESQ. Experimental results demonstrate that it is suitable to unreliable and bandwidth constraint packet networks.

While classic MD coding handles the situation where the rate in some channels drops to zero temporarily, thus causing unexpected packet-loss, it fails to accommodate more subtle changes in link rate such as rate reduction. In such case, a classic scheme can't use the link capacity left for information transfer, causing even minor rate reduction to be considered as link failure. In order to accommodate such a frequent situation, we propose a more modular design for transmitting over a diversity system, which can handle unexpected reduction in link's rate, by downgrading the original description into a more coarse description, so it would fit to the new link's rate. The method is analyzed theoretically, and performance results are presented.

multiple description coding (MDC) has emerged as a powerful technique for reliable real-time communications over lossy packet networks. In its basic form, it involves encoding a media stream into r substreams that are sent independently from a source to a destination. Each substream (or description) can be decoded independent of the other r - 1 substreams. With every successful reception of a substream, the quality of the decoded signal improves. In this paper, we consider the problem of placing a set of servers in the network such that a desired quality of service can be provided to a community of clients that request MDC-coded traffic. We formulate the server placement (SP) problem, with the goal of identifying the minimum number of server locations that can provide r descriptions to a set of clients such that the delay associated with each path from a chosen server location to a given client is bounded by a given delay constraint and the total "unreliability" associated with the group of paths to a given client is also upper bounded. We show that the SP problem belongs to the class of NP-complete problems. We propose a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation and an efficient heuristic solution for the SP problem. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm and compare it with the optimal solution provided by the MILP solution.

A cross-layer design (CLD) framework for robust and efficient video multicasting over IEEE 802.16 (or WiMAX) is introduced. In the framework, multiple description coding on scalable video bitstreams at the source for achieving multi-resolution robustness is jointly designed with superposition coding (i.e., multi-resolution modulation) on multicast signals at the channel to overcome the channel diversity problem in wireless multicast. The resulting cross-layer coded multicast signals enable us to recover some lost bitstreams in high quality layers, which is not possible if multi-resolution modulation is used alone for multicasting as in previous works. Simulation results show that indeed our joint design outperforms the scheme using only superposition coded multicast by achieving better video quality for users under multi-user channel diversity.

Error resilient coding is strongly demanded by voice communication over unreliable packet networks. In this paper, we propose a new multiple description scheme named distributed subframe interleaving, and employ this new scheme to create two novel multiple description codecs based on CELP. With introducing distributed subframe interleaving operated on two adjacent speech packets, parameters of LSP are interleaved into different descriptions while other parameters belong to different subframes are assigned in subframe-distributed principle. Moreover, parameter interpolation is adopted to restore the lost description without introducing any extra delay at the decoder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed codecs are able to provide significantly better speech quality than traditional CELP codec and suitable to unreliable packet networks.
