Video communication over lossy packet networks such as the Internet is hampered by limited bandwidth and packet loss. This paper presents a system for providing reliable video communication over these networks, where the system is composed of two subsystems: (1) multiple state video encoder/decoder and (2) a path diversity transmission system. multiple state video coding combats the problem of error propagation at the decoder by coding the video into multiple independently decodable streams, each with its own prediction process and state. If one stream is lost the other streams can still be decoded to produce usable video, and furthermore, the correctly received streams provide bidirectional (previous and future) information that enables improved state recovery for the corrupted stream. This video coder is a form of multiple description coding (MDC), and its novelty lies in its use of information from the multiple streams to perform state recovery at the decoder. The path diversity transmission. system explicitly sends different subsets of packets over different paths, as opposed to the default scenarios where the packets proceed along a single path, thereby enabling the end-to-end video application to effectively see an average path behavior. We refer to this as path diversity. Generally, seeing this average path behavior provides better performance than seeing the behavior of any individual random path. For example, the probability that all of the multiple paths are simultaneously congested is much less than the probability that a single path is congested. The resulting path diversity provides the multiple state video decoder with an appropriate virtual channel to assist in recovering from lost packets, and can also simplify system design, e.g. FEC design. We propose two architectures for achieving path diversity, and examine the effectiveness of path diversity in communicating video over a lossy packet network.

multiple description coding (MDC) provides stable wireless multimedia communications with the help of multiple transmission paths, while distributed video coding (DVC) effectively shifts the encoder complexity to decoder for mobile media devices. We proposed to combine MDC with DVC, abbreviated as MDVC, to construct a reliable and efficient video codec system. To improve the codec performance, the DPCM prediction gain is exploited from the correlations among sub-video sequences inside the MDVC to increase the reconstructed video quality. In addition, a MDVC central decoder control method, operated dynamically at frame-level, is proposed to improve the adaptation capability, as compared to the current MDC central decoder that selects one best description for the output video. The intra-and inter-correlations among MDC descriptions were investigated to make this frame selection decision for the central decoder. Simulations showed that the proposed MDVC control method demonstrates higher average PSNR and lower PSNR variations of the output videos, with the help of DPCM prediction gain and the efficient central decoder control method that correctly selected high quality WZ frames for low quality key-frames.

There are two common types of encoding paradigms in multiple descriptions (MD) coding: i) an approach based on conditional codebook generation, which was originally initiated by El-Gamal and Cover for the 2 channel setting and later extended to more than 2 channels by Venkataramani, Kramer and Goyal (VKG), ii) and an approach based on Slepian and Wolf's random binning technique, proposed by Pradhan, Puri and Ramchandran (PPR) for L > 2 descriptions. It is well known that the achievable region due to PPR subsumes the VKG region for the symmetric Gaussian MD problem. Motivated by several practical advantages of random binning based methods over the conditional codebook encoding, this paper focuses on the following important questions: Does a random binning based scheme achieve the performance of conditional codebook encoding, even for the 2 descriptions scenario? Are random binning based approaches beneficial for settings that are not fully symmetric? This paper answers both these questions in the affirmative. Specifically, we propose a 2 descriptions coding scheme, based on random binning, which subsumes the currently known largest region for this problem due to Zhang and Berger. Moreover, we propose its extensions to L > 2 channels and derive the associated achievable regions. The proposed scheme enjoys the advantages of both encoding paradigms making it particularly useful when there is symmetry only within a subset of the descriptions.

In this paper, a novel H.264-based multiple description coding (MDC) framework, called the prediction-based spatial polyphase transform (PSPT) multiple description video coding, is introduced to enhance the error-resilience ability and reduce the computational complexity of the H.264 codec. The proposed PSPT-MDC down-samples each input frame in both the horizontal and the vertical directions, forming four subframes. Instead of directly coding and transporting all the four subframes, two of them are predicted from the other two subframes. The proposed H.264-based PSPT-MDC video codec is then implemented on the TI TMS320C6416 digital signal processor with some optimizations to demonstrate its feasibility and attractive performance, in terms of the decoded video quality and error-resilience capability.

Real-time audio-visual communication requires a packet-loss recovery mechanism due to inevitable packet loss characteristics of the transmission channel such as the Internet. Especially for interactive applications e. g. real-time audio-visual communication, the delay for the recovery and enhancement technology must be minimized. Among the low-delay packet-loss recovery techniques, multiple description coding (MDC) and Forward Error Correction (FEC) are widely used for their robustness and efficiency. This paper proposes three new MDC-FEC models to minimize the overall distortion subject to specific source coding rates and channel packet loss probabilities. The proposed solution would enable adaptive selection of an optimal packet-loss recovery mechanism based on real-time feedback of channel conditions. The results indicate that this approach leads to an optimal model for joint source-channel coding based on a combination of MDC and FEC.

In this paper, we introduce a new reliable method of stereoscopic Video Streaming based on multiple description coding strategy. The proposed multiple description coding generates 3D video descriptions considering interesting objects contained in its scene. To be able to find interesting objects in the scene, we use two metrics from the second order statistics of the depth map image in a block-wise manner. Having detected the objects, the proposed multiple description coding algorithm generates the 3D video descriptions for the color video using a non-identical decimation method with respect to the identified objects. The objective test results verify the fact that the proposed method provides an improved performance than that provided by the polyphase subsampling multiple description coding and our previous work using pixel variation.

Packets carrying real-time speech data may be lost during transmission over unreliable networks. This loss can lead to considerable degradation of speech quality. In this paper, we propose a new distributed subframe interleaving scheme for multiple description speech coding to avoid repeat transmission and ensure acceptable speech quality when packet loss occurs. With introducing distributed subframe interleaving operated on two adjacent speech frames, the proposed scheme creates two correlative descriptions, each offers an acceptable quality and can be partially restored from the other. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by the objective speech quality measurement PESQ. Experimental results demonstrate that it is suitable to unreliable and bandwidth constraint packet networks.

multiple description coding (MDC) is one of the most efficient error resilient video coding methods especially when retransmissions are not acceptable. For applications in scalable, multicast and P2P environments, it is advantageous to use more than two descriptions. In this paper, we present two macroblock-level adaptive error concealment methods to improve the performance of MDC with four descriptions. A Gilbert model is used as the channel model to simulate burst packet loss. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the two proposed methods.

multiple description Video coding (MDC) and Layered coding (LC) are both error-resilient source coding techniques used for transmission over error-prone channels. Both techniques generate multiple streams. The streams generated by MDC correspond to different descriptions of the same source whereas the streams produced by LC are differentiated as base and enhancement layer streams. Moreover whereas the MDC streams are independently decodable the decoding of the enhancement layer stream is dependent on the decoding of the base layer stream. In this work we concentrate on specific MDC and LC schemes, i.e. Multi-State Video coding (MSVC) and Temporal Layered coding (TLC). MSVC was introduced in(1) and it was showed that if each frame is transmitted in a separate packet and if motion information for each lost frame is also lost, MSVC outperforms Single Layer coding (SC) in recovering from single as well as burst losses. Here we compared MSVC with TLC as an extension of SC based on transmission simulations over lossy channels under the assumption that the motion vectors are always available. Using different coding modes and specific reconstruction methods average reconstructed frame PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) is measured and compared. Results show that when motion vectors are received TLC performs better than MSVC for every coding option tested. The performance difference is bigger for low motion sequences.

Robust and flexible speech codecs are required more and more by speech communication over unreliable and heterogeneous channels such as the internet. In this paper, a novel multiple description scalable codec is proposed, which is based on the sinusoidal model and equivalent rectangular bandwidth (ERB) noise model. It combines the advantages of scalable coding and multiple descriptions coding (MDC), and provides relatively high transmission reliability and rate adaptation. The lost packet does not affect the state recovery of this state-less codec. The performance of the proposed codec was evaluated under memory and memoryless channels. Analytical and experimental results show that it is suitable to unreliable and band limited channel such as internet.
