Optimisation of droop coefficients of multiple distributed generators in a micro-grid

y An optimisation technique employing artificial bee colony algorithm has been proposed for determining the droop parameters of the distributed generators in a micro-grid, operating in isolated mode. The proposed method minimises the active power loss and maintains a flat voltage profile. The bus interfacing the main and the micro-grid has been treated as a voltage regulated bus so as to facilitate seamless transfer from the autonomous to the grid-connected mode of operation and conversely.

Virtual power plant-based distributed control strategy for multiple distributed generators

A distributed control strategy is developed to control the output of multiple distributed generators (DGs) in a coordinated fashion such that these generators develop into a virtual power plant (VPP) in a distribution network. To this end, cooperative control methodology from network control theory is used to make the VPP converge and operate at an optimal output, which is determined by the DGs' costs and the necessary service assigned by the distribution network. For each DG, the strategy only requires information from its neighbouring units, making communication networks (CNs) among the DGs simple and robust. A set of sufficient conditions under which the proposed method is valid are provided. It is shown that the proposed strategy has the advantages that the corresponding CNs are local and there is no central station collecting global information from the DGs. These features enable the VPP to have both self-organising and adaptive coordination properties. The proposed method is simulated using the IEEE standard 34-bus distribution network.

New islanding detection method with adaptively threshold for microgrid

This paper proposes a new passive method with adaptively threshold to address islanding problem of microgrid. The recommended system for islanding analysis is introduced first, and then the rate of change of power factor angle is exploited as the islanding detection index. Under grid-connect state, detection index is higher for nonislanding event. But during islanding operation, detection index approaches zero. Therefore, the introduced detection index can be better distinguish islanding and non-islanding events. Finally, a new passive method considering the voltage/frequency behavior of load is proposed, and the adaptively threshold is given by analyzing the relationship between reactive power and the resonant frequency of load after islanding occurrence. The proposed method is compared with other passive methods against various scenarios of the single and multiple DG systems. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the passive method with adaptively threshold has high reliability against islanding and non-islanding events.

Novel Islanding Detection Method for multiple DGs Based on Forced Helmholtz Oscillator

This paper proposes a novel, passive-based anti-islanding method for both inverter and synchronous machine-based distributed generation units. Unfortunately, when the active/reactive power mismatch is near to zero, the majority of passive anti-islanding methods cannot detect the islanding situation. This paper introduces a new islanding detection method based on the chaos theory that can detect the islanding condition with near-zero active power mismatch. The method uses the modified frequency of the point of common coupling link as an input signal of forced Helmholtz oscillator. The obvious change between chaotic and normal motions in the forced Helmholtz oscillator is its main advantage over other oscillators. This change determines the threshold for detection index. The non-islanding transient events, which can cause a significant deviation in the frequency-based input signal of detector, are considered in simulations for two different case studies. These events include different types of faults, load changes, capacitor bank switching, and motor starting. Further, for islanding events, the capability of the proposed islanding detection method is verified by near-to-zero active power mismatches and UL 1741-based load imbalance tests.

Unfortunately, when the active/reactive power mismatches are near to zero, majority of the passive anti-islanding methods cannot detect the islanding situation, correctly. This study introduces a new islanding detection method based on exponentially damped signal estimation method. The proposed method uses adaptive identifier method for estimating of the frequency deviation of the point of common coupling (PCC) link as a target signal that can detect the islanding condition with near-zero active power imbalance. Main advantage of the adaptive identifier method over other signal estimation methods is its small sampling window. In this paper, the adaptive identifier based islanding detection method introduces a new detection index entitled decision signal by estimating of oscillation frequency of the PCC frequency and can detect islanding conditions, properly. In islanding conditions, oscillations frequency of PCC frequency reach to zero, thus threshold setting for decision signal is not a tedious job. The non-islanding transient events, which can cause a significant deviation in the PCC frequency are considered in simulations. These events include different types of faults, load changes, capacitor bank switching, and motor starting. Fault detection and location algorithm for DG-integrated distribution systems

The overcurrent protection on the traditional distribution system uses local measurements and settings as a basis for decision-making. However, connection of multiple distributed generators with different short-circuit characteristics makes the local measurements unpredictable, leading to possible loss of protection coordination. In order to solve this problem, this study proposes an algorithm that achieves its protection function through load flow and sensitivity calculations based on voltage measurements. The algorithm is built on a modelling approach that splits the distribution network into a series of overlapping protection zones. The overlapping feature is realised logically through peer-to-peer communications between intelligent agents located in adjacent zones. A sensitivity-based electrical signature was identified that is generated when a fault occurs within a zone. Simulation results show that the proposed protection algorithm is able to identify the zone in which the fault has occurred and the specific faulted node or line section in that zone. The fault current contributions, or no contributions, of the distributed generators (DGs) do not impact the operation of this algorithm.

At present, islanding detection is one of the important research orientations in the area of distributed generation (DG). There exist currently in the literature several methods for islanding detection in the case of single distributed generator connected to a utility grid. These methods are classified as active, passive and methods installed on the utility. However, these methods have limitations or become ineffective in the case of multiple distributed generators connected to the same point of the utility grid because of the interferences between sources. In this paper, we present a robust islanding detection method based on the correlation technique. Analytical and simulation studies were performed in order to validate the accuracy of the method. The results showed that this method behaves well in the case of multiple distributed generators connected to the utility grid even in the critical situations i.e. when the power of the load is provided solely by the distributed generator.
