Super-resolution orbital angular momentum based radar targets detection

Radiating twisted beams, orbital angular momentum (OAM) based radar provides a new perspective for present radar techniques. However, estimation methods now used has a demerit of resolution. Thus, we raised multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm to improve resolution ability based on this innovative concept. The echo model based on uniform circular array for MUSIC was first built. In contrast to uncorrelated signals in classical MUSIC algorithm, echo signals from targets are fully coherent with each other. Spatial smoothing technique was subsequently utilised in OAM regime to tackle it. Simulation results showed the super-resolution capacity of MUSIC to detect objectives compared with the traditional fast Fourier transform method.

Subspace-based direction-of-arrival estimation using centro-symmetrical arrays

A fast algorithm is presented to dramatically reduce the complexity of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm with centro-symmetrical arrays. The proposed method requires only real-valued computations with a limited spectral search over half of the angular field-of-view, and the dimension of the noise subspace and that of the search vector are reduced, leading to about 96.875% complexity reduction as compared with MUSIC. Simulations show the new estimator performs well at low signal-to-noise ratio and with a small number of snapshots.

Decoupled frequency diverse array range-angle-dependent beampattern synthesis using non-linearly increasing frequency offsets

The frequency diverse array (FDA) using linearly increasing frequency offsets has received much attention, but it has a range and angle coupled beampattern. This study proposes a new uniform linear FDA with non-linearly increasing frequency offsets to decouple the range-angle-dependent beampattern. Square increasing and cubic increasing frequency offsets are suggested for the FDA. In doing so, the range and angle of targets are solely estimated without ambiguities by the multiple signal classification algorithm. Numerical results show that the proposed approach outperforms the existing approach using logarithmically increasing frequency offsets in both focusing transmit energy and target localisation performance, especially in the range dimension.

Subspace tracking in a sensor array using complex Bingham distribution

This study presents a subspace-based tracking algorithm called Bingham filter using the outputs of a sensor array. Given n sensors in the sensor array with spatially and temporally white Gaussian noise in the outputs of the array, the Bingham filter estimates the signal subspaces generated by the targets based on the phased array observations, a priori information and previous estimates. Assuming the complex Bingham distribution as the probability distribution of the target subspace, the authors propose a closed-form solution to the problem of updating the predicted subspace using the phased array observations. Furthermore, the authors offer a closed-form solution for the prediction step of the tracking algorithm based on the relation between the complex Bingham distribution parameters and its covariance matrix. Combining these two steps, a new subspace tracking algorithm is derived that is similar to the Kalman filter. The algorithm is applied to track underwater targets and its efficiency is investigated using simulated phased array observations. Simulation results show that compared with the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm alone, the combination of the Bingham filter and MUSIC algorithm has better performance in low SNR scenarios.

The authors investigate the problem of two-dimensional (2D) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of multiple signals for coprime planar arrays (CPAs) in this study and they propose a computationally efficient 1D partial spectral search approach based on multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. The conventional 2D MUSIC algorithm for CPAs has a great DOA estimation performance, but suffers from a tremendously expensive computational complexity due to the 2D spectral search. To this end, the proposed approach first decreases the dimension of the spectrum function to one dimension and then utilises the linear relationship between the true and ambiguous DOA estimates to form a 1D partial spectral search over a small sector. Finally, the true DOA estimates can be achieved based on the coprime property. The proposed approach can have an impressively good DOA estimation performance, but with a low computational cost. Simulation results validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach.

Patch and monopole antennas in linear coprime arrays for direction of arrival estimation using compressed sensing

Original work on direction of arrival (DOA) estimation relied on uniform linear arrays (ULAs) of antennas. Most of the work focused on improving the algorithms and the configuration of the antenna array and overlooked the effects of practical antennas on the algorithm performance. Very limited work studied DOA estimation within the physical limitations of handheld devices. In this work, we introduce three nonuniform linear coprime arrays based on patch and monopole antenna elements operating in 2.1 and 5.8 GHz bands and assess their behaviour in DOA estimation. The complex radiation patterns of the arrays were incorporated in the DOA estimation algorithm using compressed sensing (CS). Estimation accuracy is quantified by the root mean square error (RMSE) and the results are compared with those obtained by using isotropic antennas, showing that physical antennas can introduce up to 8 degrees of error. Simulations were also carried out using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm to demonstrate the advantage of CS in coprime arrays. The MUSIC algorithm failed to detect all sources even at maximum SNR. The impact of reducing the fundamental inter-element spacing in coprime arrays below $0.5\lambda $0.5 lambda to achieve smaller array sizes is investigated as well.

Fluorescence lifetime estimation method for incomplete decay

A new incomplete decay signal model is proposed to describe the incomplete decay effects in a time-correlated single-photon counting based fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy system. On the basis of this model, a multiple signal classification algorithm to correctly estimate fluorescence lifetimes even in the presence of incomplete decay effects is modified. Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to demonstrate the performances of the proposed approach, and the results show that the proposed method is insensitive to the laser pulse rate and has a larger lifetime dynamic range compared with previously reported approaches. To the authors' knowledge, it is the first non-fitting method that can resolve all lifetime components individually of a multi-exponential decay suffering from incomplete decay effects.

Neural source estimation from a time-frequency component of somatic evoked high-frequency magnetic oscillations to posterior tibial nerve stimulation

Objective: High frequency oscillations (HFOs) evoked by posterior tibial nerve stimulation were recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Time-frequency domain multiple signal classification (TF-MUSIC) algorithm was applied, and the usefulness of this method was demonstrated. Methods: Ten normal subjects were studied. To localize sources for the HFOs of those somatosensory evoked fields, we applied two kinds of methods: the single moving dipole (SMD) method and the TF-MUSIC method. The SMD method was applied after digitally band-pass filtering the somatosensory response with a bandwidth of 500-800 Hz. To estimate the locations of sources with the TF-MUSIC algorithm, we first set the target region on the spectrogram of the somatosensory responses. Then, the procedure described in Section 2.2 was applied with this target region. Results: A clear, isolated region was detected in 6 out of 10 subjects using a time-frequency spectrogram. The averaged distance of the dipole sources between the HFOs and the underlying P37m using the TF-MUSIC algorithm was smaller than using the SMD method. Conclusions: The TF-MUSIC algorithm is suitable for extracting a target response whose spectrum changes significantly during the observation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. In coal mining, thickness of thin coal layer is measured for maintaining a defined coal mining horizon. Researchers working in the geotechnical field for detection and thickness measurement of near surface interface address challenges using recent development in radar signal processing. This paper addresses challenge in measuring thickness of thin coal layer left on mine haulage way roof for mine safety. Here, step frequency continuous wave ground penetrating radar (SFCW GPR) signal processing is given for measuring thickness of thin coal layer in presence of interfaces as coal-shale and coal-shale-clay. We use multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm for detecting the interfaces of dissimilar material. In order to improve the resolving power, MUSIC with spatial smoothing process (SSP) and modified spatial smoothing process (MSSP) are applied. Experimental results on thickness measurement using synthetic data models, full wave model (FWM), plane wave model (PWM) and modified plane wave model (MPWM) are demonstrated to compare the effectiveness of estimation algorithms.

In order to solve the problem that the channel gain-phase mismatch would deteriorate the performance of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in actual direction finding (DF) system, a novel efficient gain-phase calibration algorithm based on the self-checking signal is proposed in this paper. By injecting a self-checking signal into the actual DF system, the whole calibration process could divide into the off-line pre-calibration and the auto-calibration part. Thus, it could realize the real-time auto-calibration efficiently during the DOA estimation process. Moreover, in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a practical DF signal processor based on the FPGA and DSP is implemented in this paper, and the experiments are carried out in the anechoic chamber. The experiment result shows that the proposed method could calibrate the gain-phase mismatch in real-time and have higher DOA estimation accuracy.
