Older persons' experiences of care encounters in their home: A multiple-case study

AimTo explore and describe older persons' unique experiences of care encounters with home care nurses in a real-life *** increasing number of older persons in society contributes to increases in age-related impairments compromising their quality of life. Future care consists of "hospitals at home" where care encounters occur in a person's private domain, partly becoming a clinical workplace. Scant research has focused on how older persons experience care encounters with home care nurses and needs to be ***-case *** cases relied on replication logic and five purposive sampled older persons were interviewed. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis and differences within and between cases were explored and findings across the cases were *** cross-analysis emerged in three categories: "Nursing routine rules the care encounters", "Lack of knowledge and information" and "Dependency on support from others".ConclusionsOur research has found that older persons face challenges while receiving home care, including limited engagement in their care and the need for enhanced support. Implementing person-centred care in homes poses ethical challenges that require careful consideration. Service Coordination in Early Childhood Home Visiting: a multiple-case study

Early childhood home visiting is a preventive service delivery strategy that aims to promote child and parent health, positive parenting, child development and school readiness, and family economic self-sufficiency. To meet families' needs, programs provide a combination of direct services, and referrals and linkages to community-based services. Service coordination is therefore a critical component of home visiting's role within the early childhood system of care. This multiple-case study describes facilitators and barriers to service coordination, as identified by home visiting program staff and families. We interviewed program managers, supervisors, home visitors, and families from four local home visiting programs in the eastern USA with diverse contextual characteristics that showed evidence of having strong coordination. Using multiple-case study methodology, we analyzed the data to understand key facilitators and barriers to service coordination for each case and identify and describe common themes across cases. Facilitators included interagency relationships and collaboration;a culture of teamwork;dedicated, well-connected staff;supervision;trusting relationships with families;and warm handoffs. Barriers to service coordination were limited availability and accessibility of local resources, perceived stigma among other service providers, and families' ambivalence toward some services. Home visiting staff and families emphasized that relationships at multiple levels are fundamental to service coordination, barriers are complex, and coordination is time- and labor-intensive. Coalitions that bring together diverse stakeholder groups at the state and local levels can provide meaningful coordination support to the early childhood services.

Aim We aim to identify measures implemented by hospital nursing directors early in the COVID-19 pandemic and enabling factors. Background Managerial factors affect nurses' physical and mental health and willingness to work, especially early in a pandemic. Method We used multiple-case study of 15 hospitals, comparing management approaches by interviewing 28 nursing directors and their assistants from August to December 2020. Results Hospitals that accepted COVID-19 patients and hospitals that unexpectedly experienced clusters underwent a nursing provision system organization phase, followed by an adjustment phase to maintain nursing organization function. Two factors aided measure implementation: an emergency system and staff protection policies. Conclusion Early epidemic management strategies apply across contexts. The hospital's basic attitude is key to effective implementation of the strategies. Implications for Nursing Management The results suggest that hospitals, nursing directors and nurses can each prepare for future emerging infectious disease epidemics.

Exploring How and Why to Develop Patient-Centered Packaging: A multiple-case study with Pharmaceutical Companies

Background Patient centricity has gained attention ranging from regulatory authorities to patient advocacy groups, calling for pharmaceutical companies to revise their traditional business approach to drug development by including the development of solutions that are meaningful in patients' lives. Medication packaging is one area where empirical evidence is lacking about the incorporation of patient centricity. This study aimed to explore patient centricity applied to pharmaceutical companies' packaging, and to identify the specific challenges faced and lessons learned when developing patient-centered packaging. Methods The study followed a multiple-case study research approach based on five cases of patient-centered packaging development in mid- and large-sized pharmaceutical companies. Results Patient-centered packaging is often associated with the intuitive and self-explanatory use of the medication by patients. Patient-centered packaging comes with challenges, but also offers opportunities for the creation of better solutions for patients and learning for the teams involved. To overcome these challenges, it is essential to build a business case that justifies such development, one where patient needs are present from the start and aligned with other imperative deadlines of drug development, with stakeholders onboard. Conclusion Patient-centered packaging is the exception rather than the norm in packaging development due to a conventional approach where packaging plays an ancillary role to drug protection. The cases presented here challenge this approach and can inspire other companies to carry out patient-centered packaging development. The cases are also relevant to other actors who are interested in continuously promoting the dialogue about patient centricity in healthcare.

To implement a circular economy (CE), companies arc pushed to innovate, respectively, their business models, from a micro-perspective, and their supply chains, from a mesoperspective. Despite the increasing research on both these perspectives, there is still a knowledge gap on how companies innovate business models and supply chains for circularity. In this study, we build on innovation management, circular business model (CBM), and circular supply chain (CSC) literatures and develop a theory-based framework where circularity leads to product/process/service innovation from a micro-perspective, and to possible innovation in companies' supply chains (retaining existing chains/renewing them) from a meso-perspective. Through a multiple-case study of Finnish and Italian CE pioneer companies, we validate this framework, find evidence on interplay between CBM and CSC innovation, and identify innovation strategy variants. The framework contributes to innovation management, CBM, and CSC literature works, and encourages managers willing to adopt circularity to consider innovating simultaneously both their business models and supply chains.

Tragedy of the facilitated commons: A multiple-case study of failure in systematic horizontal logistics collaboration

Horizontal logistics collaboration can increase environmental sustainability and reduce shipping costs. Given these benefits-and the fact that few shippers actually opt to collaborate-public sector agencies and industry associations have attempted to sponsor and support the facilitation of horizontal logistics collaboration projects over the past 20 years. The literature, however, has yet to reveal the fact that these efforts have largely failed. Here, we introduce systematic horizontal logistics collaboration and apply Ostrom's theory of the commons and agency theory to extract antecedents on why these projects failed. We present a multiple-case study on unsuccessful horizontal logistics collaboration projects in Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, and Denmark. We address a gap in supply chain literature with regard to systematic collaboration;we also demonstrate the utility of commons theory in the supply chain domain and contribute to the literature on supply chain collaboration with facilitators. Finally, we discuss managerial implications, both for the practitioners attempting systematic horizontal logistics collaboration and for the policymakers seeking to promote it.

Artificial intelligence in supply chain and operations management: a multiple case study research

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly considered a source of competitive advantage in operations and supply chain management (OSCM). However, many organisations still struggle to adopt it successfully and empirical studies providing clear indications are scarce in the literature. This research aims to shed light on how AI applications can support OSCM processes and to identify benefits and barriers to their implementation. To this end, it conducts a multiple case study with semi-structured interviews in six companies, totalling 17 implementation cases. The Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model guided the entire study and the analysis of the results by targeting specific processes. The results highlighted how AI methods in OSCM can increase the companies' competitiveness by reducing costs and lead times and improving service levels, quality, safety, and sustainability. However, they also identify barriers in the implementation of AI, such as ensuring data quality, lack of specific skills, need for high investments, lack of clarity on economic benefits and lack of experience in cost analysis for AI projects. Although the nature of the study is not suitable for wide generalisation, it offers clear guidance for practitioners facing AI dilemmas in specific SCOR processes and provides the basis for further future research.

Nursing management for temporary lodging facilities in Japan in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic: A multiple-case study

Aim: Temporary lodging facilities which were non-medical facilities were established to secure beds for severely and moderately ill patients with COVID-19, as well as for isolation, non-contact observation, and care of mildly ill and asymptomatic patients in Japan. This study aims to understand nursing management practices adopted in these facilities by examining cases of their establishment and operation. Methods: A multiple-case study design was used. Interviews for qualitative data collection were conducted from August to October 2020. After analyzing the nursing management practices in four temporary lodging facilities, common points were collated and integrated. Results: For the establishment and operation of temporary lodging facilities, a three-layer structure based on disaster management methods was adopted: headquarters at the helm as overseers, field supervisors in the middle, and frontline nursing staff at the base. The structure had clear roles, facilitated information exchange, and provided efficient and effective nursing care. Field supervisors mainly provided psychological and clinical support for staff and served as information and interprofessional hubs. Conclusion: It is recommended that temporary lodging facilities should be organized based on principles of the division of labor. The workforce should comprise nursing staff, and experienced nursing professionals should be recruited to the higher echelons.

Impact Investing in Ghana: A multiple-case study

Contrary to extant studies on impact investing, which provide understanding from a demand-side perspective, this study changes this perspective by exploring the approach to impact investing from a supply-side viewpoint. Using a multiple-case study design and qualitative data from two Ghanaian impact investment organisations, significant strides are made to the limited but growing impact investment literature by providing in-depth descriptive account based on three dimensions: (i) funding approach, (ii) engagement approach, and (iii) exiting approach. Our findings provide evidence of an impact investment approach characterised by the concurrent motive of financial and social/environmental returns, longer time horizon, and engagement or provision of non-financial support. We conclude that this approach leverages the tools of venture capital to realise social or ecological purposes. The findings can potentially assist investors and entrepreneurs to make informed decisions to navigate the complexity surrounding the emerging impact investment environment in Ghana and economies of similar nature. Additionally, it will aid in developing explicit policies to regulate the sector, increase its awareness, and widens its appeal and use to serve the intended purpose of addressing social and environmental problems.

Critical deficiencies in restorative conference facilitator trainings: a multiple-case study

ABSTRACTABSTRACTRestorative justice in the juvenile and criminal justice contexts can produce positive outcomes for victims, offenders, and communities. Research demonstrates that restorative justice can produce negative outcomes for participants under certain circumstances, including poor conference facilitator performance. Facilitator performance is at least partially attributable to their training, but there is scant research on conference facilitator training. This multiple-case study explores the delivery modality, methods of instruction, and training content of 11 trainings delivered over a four-year period. This article concludes with recommendations for training modifications and future research to enhance the positive outcomes of restorative justice for all participants.
