MIMO OFDM Dual-Function Radar-Communication Under Error Rate and Beampattern Constraints

In this work we consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) system, which senses multiple spatial directions and serves multiple users. Upon resorting to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission format and a differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation, we study the design of the radiated waveforms and of the receive filters employed by the radar and the users. The approach is communication-centric, in the sense that a radar-oriented objective is optimized under constraints on the average transmit power, the power leakage towards specific directions, and the error rate of each user, thus safeguarding the communication quality of service (QoS). We adopt a unified design approach allowing a broad family of radar objectives, including both estimation- and detection-oriented merit functions. We devise a suboptimal solution based on alternating optimization of the involved variables, a convex restriction of the feasible search set, and minorization-maximization, offering a single algorithm for all of the radar merit functions in the considered family. Finally, the performance is inspected through numerical examples.

Data-driven calibration of decoupling matrix for MIMO precision motion stages

Decoupling control is a commonly employed technique for achieving high precision in multiple -input multipleoutput (MIMO) motion control systems. A static decoupling matrix, which can be determined using geometric construction, is widely used due to its practicality and simplicity. However, inaccurate geometric parameters will lead to a coarse decoupling matrix, and result in interactions among the system axes and performance deterioration. To tackle this challenge, various attempts have been undertaken to calibrate the decoupling matrix. Data -driven on-line approaches have gained considerable attention for their ability to calibrate the decoupling matrix without interrupting the normal operation of the system. This paper presents a data -driven approach to calibrate the decoupling matrix for MIMO and linear time invariant (LTI) systems. Through some reasonable assumptions, a calibrated static decoupling matrix can be derived to improve the performance of the system. Moreover, considering the inevitable presence of measurement noise, the consistency of the proposed method has been analyzed. As a result, the instrument variable is introduced in the improved method to eliminate the impact of the measurement noise. Finally, the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method are demonstrated through both numerical simulations and experiments carried out on an ultraprecision wafer stage.

Blind recognition of space time block code in MIMO systems

Space time block code (STBC) and vertical Bell layered space-time (VBLAST) signals are widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and one essential step in the signal interception process is to recognize STBC/VBLAST. As the STBC signal is correlated in time, it has a specific cyclic frequency in higher-order cyclic accumulation, while the VBLAST signal emitted from different antenna is uncorrelated. According to this property, this paper proposes a blind recognition approach for STBC/VBLAST signals based on fourth-order cyclic accumulation (FCC). The recognition process is divided into two steps. In the first step, we first establish the correlation choosing criteria that makes sure all correlations of STBC can generate a statistically cyclic sequence. The cyclic statistic then is estimated by combining the FCC with channel information that provides the peaks phase of the statistically cyclic sequence. The second step compares the estimated cyclic statistic with a detection threshold, which is obtained by given a probability of false alarms. The proposed approach avoids the need for any prior knowledge of the transmitted signal, and can work well in the lowly SNR by employing the advantages of FCC. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. Capacity and Error Performance of Reduced-Rank Transmitter Multiuser Preprocessing Based on Minimum Power Distortionless Response

In this contribution we first derive a transmitter multiuser preprocessing (TMP) scheme for a general multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system based on the minimum power distortionless response (MPDR) criterion, which minimizes the power in the context of a given downlink mobile terminal (MT) under the distortionless condition. This optimization problem results in a solution, which has the same form as the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) multiuser detection (MUD). Hence, we then extend the well-known rank-reduction techniques in MMSE-MUD to the MPDR-TMP in order to mitigate the possible implementation problems of the MPDR-TMP. In our study three classes of rank-reduction algorithms are considered, which are derived, respectively, based on the eigen-analysis methods of principal components (PC) and cross-spectral metrics (CSMs) as well as on the Taylor polynomial approximation (TPA) approach, which does not depend on the eigen-analysis. In this contribution both the capacity and error performance of a downlink space-division multiple-access (SDMA) system is investigated, when either the full-rank or reduced-rank MPDR-TMP is invoked. From our study and simulation results, it can be shown that the MPDR-TMP scheme is highly efficient for achieving the capacity and for suppressing the multiuser interference (MUI). The reduced-rank techniques can be employed by the MPDR-TMP, so as to reduce its implementation complexity while achieving the near full-rank performance of the full-rank MPDR-TMP.

Analytical Performance of Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relaying with Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes

This paper considers orthogonal space-time block coded transmission for a multiple-input multiple-output channel (MIMO) with non-coherent amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying in Rayleigh fading. We first characterize the statistical properties of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination, by deriving new exact closed form expressions for the moment generating function, cumulants, and first and second moments. These results show a reciprocity relationship between the number of antennas at the relay and destination. The probability density function and cumulative distribution function of the SNR are also derived for certain system configurations, and for various asymptotic regimes. We then investigate the system performance by presenting new analytical expressions for the symbol error rate, outage probability, amount of fading, as well as the diversity order and array gain. Our results indicate that the proposed scheme can achieve the maximum diversity order of the non-coherent AF MIMO relay channel.

Rate-one full-diversity quasi-orthogonal STBCs with low decoding complexity

This paper presents a family of rate-one quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes (QO-STBCs) for any number of transmit antennas. Full diversity of the proposed QO-STBCs is achieved via the use of constellation rotation. When the number of transmit antennas is even, these codes are delay "optimal." this property along with the quasi-orthogonality one allows the codes to have low decoding complexity. Besides, by applying lookup tables into the detection methods presented in [1] and generalizing them, two low-complexity maximum-likelihood (ML) decoders for the proposed QO-STBCs and for other existing QO-STBCs, called PMLD and QMLD, are obtained. Simulation results are provided to verify the bit error rate (BER) performances and complexities of both the proposed QOSTBCs and the proposed decoders.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonics-aided 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless Terahertz-wave (THz-wave) signal transmission system, which realizes 6 x 20-Gb/s six-channel polarization division multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying THz-wave signal delivery over 10-km wireline single-mode fiber-link and 142-cm wireless 2 x 2 MIMO link with a bit-error ratio under the hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). Our employed multi-carrier frequencies are located within the range of 375 GHz to 500 GHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of 2 x 2 MIMO wireless transmission of multi-channel THz-wave signal. Here, it is worth noting that our wireless 2 x 2 MIMO link, which offers point-to-point straight transmission and brings neither interference nor gain, is different from the traditional MIMO link defined in the field of wireless communications.

Smart Jamming for Secrecy: Deep Reinforcement Learning Enabled Secure Visible Light Communication

As one of the indoor communication technologies, visible light communication (VLC) has drawn great attention for its advantages such as ultra-wide unlicensed spectrum, power saving and low complexity. The nature of the visible light propagation is an open channel, which is vulnerable to wiretapping. This paper investigates a secure VLC mechanism enabled by multiple light fixtures acting as friendly jammers. The goal of the friendly jammers is to diminish the capability of the eavesdropper to infer the undisclosed information, on the premise of causing minimal impact on the legitimate receiver. For this reason, an algorithm based on reinforcement learning is proposed to dynamically optimize the friendly jamming policy in realistic nonstationary environments. In order to resolve the difficult problem of the dimensional curse and to effectively represent the continuous state and action spaces, an algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning is devised, which utilizes deep convolutional neural networks to accelerate the convergence rate of the learning process. A differentiable neural dictionary is introduced to make full use of the experiences in similar anti-eavesdropping scenarios to improve the learning capability. Simulation results demonstrate that, the proposed schemes can achieve a higher secrecy rate and a lower bit error rate than some state-of-the-art schemes.

Reduced-Complexity MIMO Detection via a Slicing Breadth-First Tree Search

A bottleneck in multiple-input multiple-output communications systems is the complexity of detection at the receiver. The complexity of optimum maximum-likelihood detection is often prohibitive, especially for large numbers of antennas and large alphabets. A suboptimal tree-search-based detector known as the K-best detector is an effective scheme that provides a flexible performance-complexity tradeoff. In this paper, we identify scalar list detection as a key building block of the K-best detector, and we propose an efficient low-complexity implementation of the scalar list detector for M-ary QAM using a slicing operation. Embedding the slicing list detector into the K-best framework leads to our proposed slicing K-best detector. Simulation results show that the proposed detector offers comparable performance to the conventional K-best detector, but with significantly reduced complexity when K is less than the QAM alphabet size M. Since the slicing list detection is performed at each visited node in the detection tree, the complexity reduction is especially significant when the number of antennas and the alphabet size are large, making the proposed detector a competitive option for high spectral-efficiency wireless systems.

On Vector Perturbation Precoding for the MIMO Gaussian Broadcast Channel

Precoding schemes in the framework of vector perturbation (VP) for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel (GBC) are investigated. The VP scheme, originally a "one-shot" technique, is generalized to encompass processing over multiple time instances. Using lattice-based extended alphabets ("perturbations"), and considering the infinite time-span extension limit, a lower bound on the achievable sum-rate using the generalized VP scheme is analytically obtained. The lower bound is shown to asymptotically achieve the optimum sum-rate in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime (both in terms of degrees-of-freedom and power offset), for any number of users and transmit antennas. For the two-user cases, it is shown that the lower bound coincides with the sum-capacity for low SNR. The above lower bound is constructively obtained by means of an efficient practically oriented suboptimal transmit energy minimization algorithm, which exhibits a polynomial complexity in the number of users. The proposed precoding scheme demonstrates that the "shaping gain" is achievable for VP schemes, when employing "good" multidimensional lattices. It is also shown that the suboptimum algorithm has its merits, even when processing over multiple time instances is not employed. For the 2 x 2 MIMO GBC, the VP scheme is generalized further, and an inner bound for the entire achievable rate region is obtained, by which an interesting correspondence is identified with the ultimate capacity region, as obtained by "dirty paper coding".
