Owing to the vulnerability of relay-assisted communications, improving wireless security from a physical layer signal processing perspective is attracting increasing interest. Hence, we address the problem of secure transmission in a relay-assisted network, where a pair of legitimate user equipments (UEs) communicate with the aid of a multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) relay in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers (eves). Assuming imperfect knowledge of the eves' channels, we jointly optimize the power of the source UE, the amplify-and-forward relaying matrix, and the covariance of the artificial noise transmitted by the relay, in order to maximize the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the destination, while imposing a set of robust secrecy constraints. To tackle the resultant non-convex optimization problem with tractable complexity, a new penalized difference-of-convex (DC) algorithm is proposed, which is specifically designed for solving a class of non-convex semidefinite programs. We show how this penalized DC framework can be invoked for solving our robust secure relaying problem with proven convergence. In addition, to benchmark the proposed algorithm, we subsequently propose a semidefinite relaxation-based exhaustive search approach, which yields an upper bound of the secure relaying problem, however, with significantly higher complexity. Our simulation results show that the proposed solution is capable of ensuring the secrecy of the relay-aided transmission and significantly improving the robustness toward the eves' channel uncertainties as compared with the non-robust counterparts. It is also demonstrated the penalized DC-based method advocated yields a performance close to the upper bound.

To meet the ever-growing demand for high data rates, employing a large number of antennas at both the transmitter and receiver is a necessity for future advanced wireless systems. multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which are equipped with multiple antennas, provide high data rates with high spectral efficiency. However, the design of an efficient, robust and non-erroneous detection algorithm is a huge challenge in large MIMO systems. In this paper, a stochastic bio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm is proposed for large MIMO detection. The proposed algorithm is motivated by the bioluminescence of fireflies and uses a probabilistic metric to update solutions in the search space. Robustness of the proposed algorithm is verified under channel estimation errors at the receiver. Simulation results reveal that the proposed algorithm outperforms unordered congestion control ant colony optimization, congestion control ant colony optimization, standard particle swarm optimization, binary particle swarm optimization, memetic particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm, firefly algorithm with neighborhood attraction, minimum mean square error and successive interference cancellation based MIMO detection techniques in terms of bit error rate (BER) performance. The proposed algorithm achieves near maximum likelihood BER performance with lower computational complexity. This makes the proposed algorithm an appropriate candidate for reliable detection in future large MIMO systems.

MBER Space-Time Decision Feedback Equalization Assisted Multiuser Detection for multiple Antenna Aided SDMA Systems

This paper proposes a space-time decision feedback equalization (ST-DFE) assisted multiuser detection (MUD) scheme for multiple receiver antenna aided space division multiple access systems. A minimum bit error rate (MBER) design is invoked for the MUD, which is shown to be capable of improving the achievable bit-error rate performance and enhancing the attainable system capacity over that of the standard minimum mean square error (MMSE) design. An adaptive implementation of the MBER ST-DFE assisted MUD is proposed using a stochastic gradient-based least bit error rate algorithm, which is demonstrated to consistently outperform the classical least mean square (LMS) algorithm, while achieving a lower computational complexity than the LMS algorithm for the binary signalling scheme. Our simulation results demonstrate that the MBER ST-DFE assisted MUD is more robust to channel estimation errors as well as to potential error propagation imposed by decision feedback errors, compared to the MMSE ST-DFE assisted MUD.

Multi-IRS-Aided Multi-User MIMO in mmWave/THz Communications: A Space-Orthogonal Scheme

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) are two appealing technologies in millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communications. The challenge of combining these two technologies lies in joint design for active beamforming (at the base-station (BS)/users) and passive beamforming (at the IRSs). In this paper, we consider a multi-IRS-aided multi-user MIMO scenario and propose a novel space-orthogonal scheme by applying zero-forcing techniques. Specifically, we first propose a multi-IRS-based zero-interference criterion, under which multi-user interference can be eliminated regardless of the IRS's phase shifts. Based on this criterion, we decompose the precoder/decoder matrix into a product of two matrices, with one of them devised for interference cancellation and the other one of them devised for achievable rate maximization. Next, an approximate space-orthogonal technique referred to as partial zero-forcing (IRS-PZF) is proposed for proposed for devising the former matrix whose objective is to cancel the multi-user interference;while two efficient phase-shift schemes are proposed for the IRS passive beamforming, namely, water-filling segment matching (WSM) and phase iterative evolution (PIE), which balance between performance and complexity. Finally, we calculate the latter matrix of the precoder/decoder by applying the singular value decomposition (SVD) for the effective BS-user channels, so as to maximize the users' achievable rates. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed scheme compared with the benchmarks.

Beam Designs for Millimeter-Wave Backhaul With Dual-Polarized Uniform Planar Arrays

This paper proposes hybrid beamforming designs for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) backhaul systems equipped with uniform planar arrays (UPAs) of dual-polarization antennas at both the transmit and receive base stations. The proposed beamforming designs are to near-optimally solve optimization problems taking the dual-polarization UPA structure into account. Based on the solutions of optimization problems, this paper shows it is possible to generate the optimal dual-polarization beamformer from the optimal single-polarization beamformer sharing the same optimality. As specific examples, squared error and magnitude of inner product are considered respectively for optimization criteria. To optimize proposed beamformers, partial channel information is needed, and the use of low overhead pilot sequences is also proposed to figure out the required information. Simulation results verify that the resulting beamformers have the most uniform gain (with the squared error criterion) or the highest average gain (with the magnitude of inner product criterion) in the covering region with the UPA of dual-polarization antennas.

A Framework for Multi-Functional Optimization in RIS-Aided Hybrid Analog-Digital MIMO Systems

Both the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and the hybrid analog-digital antenna array have been envisioned as two cost-effective and promising technologies for achieving various types of functionality enhancement of future wireless systems. In this paper, we develop a framework for the multi-functional optimization in the RIS-aided hybrid analog-digital multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, where a board of performance metrics related to diverse system functionalities are considered, such as capacity and mean square error (MSE) for information transmission (IT), Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for radar sensing, harvested energy for energy harvesting (EH) and so on. Under this framework, we focus on two types of multi-functional optimization problems, namely, the multi-objective multi-functional optimization and the single-objective optimization subject to multi-functional constraints, and propose a unified low-complexity algorithm by separately optimizing analog and digital matrix variables. Specifically, for the multi-objective optimization, we firstly propose the numerical quadratic optimization based (QuaOpt-based) algorithm and the low-complexity channel alignment based algorithm to separately optimize analog matrices, including the RIS reflecting matrix, the analog precoder and the analog equalizer. Then, for the optimization of digital precoder, the numerical semidefinite programming (SDP)-based algorithm and the QuaOpt-based algorithm are proposed to iteratively solve the digital precoder optimization problem, while the matrix-monotonic optimization based algorithm derives the optimal closed-form solution in low computational complexity. Whereas for the single-objective optimization, the above proposed algorithms are still applicable by applying the Lagrangian duality theory to tackle the multi-functional constraints. Performance Analysis of RIS-Aided Double Spatial Scattering Modulation for mmWave MIMO Systems

In this paper, we investigate a practical structure of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based double spatial scattering modulation (DSSM) for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. A suboptimal detector is proposed, in which the beam direction is first demodulated according to the received beam strength, and then the remaining information is demodulated by adopting the maximum likelihood algorithm. Based on the proposed suboptimal detector, we derive the conditional pairwise error probability expression. Further, the exact numerical integral and closed-form expressions of unconditional pairwise error probability (UPEP) are derived via two different approaches. To provide more insights, we derive the upper bound and asymptotic expressions of UPEP. In addition, the diversity gain of the RIS-DSSM scheme was also given. Furthermore, the union upper bound of average bit error probability (ABEP) is obtained by combining the UPEP and the number of error bits. Simulation results are provided to validate the derived upper bound and asymptotic expressions of ABEP. We found an interesting phenomenon that the ABEP performance of the proposed system-based phase shift keying is better than that of the quadrature amplitude modulation. Additionally, the performance advantage of ABEP is more significant with the increase in the number of RIS elements.

Combined Time, Frequency and Space Diversity in DVB-NGH

In this paper, we investigate the combined use of time, frequency, and space diversity in DVB-NGH, the next generation mobile broadcasting standard. Compared to current standards like DVB-H or DVB-SH, the largest improvement in next generation systems is expected to be achieved by means of better diversity in the time, frequency, and space domains. In this sense, DVB-NGH is the first broadcasting system to exploit the use of diversity in the three domains by incorporating at the physical layer long time interleaving (TI), time-frequency slicing (TFS), and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). This paper investigates the gains of using time, frequency, and space diversity in DVB-NGH, as well as the mutual influence between the different types of diversity. To this purpose, we employ an information-theoretic approach based on the outage capacity of the channel in addition to physical layer simulations.

LR-aided sphere decoding of generalized spatial modulation signals

This paper presents a new low complexity sphere decoding (SD) for the generalized spatial modulation (GSM). We introduce a pre-processing stage using the lattice reduction (LR) aided minimum mean squared error (MMSE) equalization in the GSM systems. This stage speeds up the search in the decoding tree and provides a lattice dependent (LD) initial choice of the radius. Moreover, we derive a lattice independent (LI) initial radius that guarantees the optimal performance at a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We also propose an iterative method to increase the radius in order to achieve the maximum likelihood (ML) performance at all SNRs. We show that the proposed algorithm achieves the ML performance while requiring prominently less computational complexity (CC) than an exhaustive search. In addition, we analyze the CC of the resulting algorithm at high SNRs and we derive an analytical expression for the complexity. The simulation results demonstrate a noticeable decrease in the CC of the proposed sphere decoding algorithm in comparison with its counterparts, particularly at low SNRs. A General MIMO Framework for NOMA Downlink and Uplink Transmission Based on Signal Alignment

The application of multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) techniques to nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems is important to enhance the performance gains of NOMA. In this paper, a novel MIMO-NOMA framework for downlink and uplink transmission is proposed by applying the concept of signal alignment. By using stochastic geometry, closed-form analytical results are developed to facilitate the performance evaluation of the proposed framework for randomly deployed users and interferers. The impact of different power allocation strategies, namely fixed power allocation and cognitive radio inspired power allocation, on the performance of MIMO-NOMA is also investigated. Computer simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework and the accuracy of the developed analytical results.
