Design and performance investigation of a low profile MIMO/Diversity antenna for WLAN/WiMAX/HIPERLAN applications with high isolation

A low profile triband compact multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna operating at WLAN, WiMAX, and HIPERLAN bands is presented. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of two planar inverted-F antenna elements located at the top two corners of printed circuit board (PCB). Dimensions of each antenna elements are reduced substantially by employing a meandered line and folded patch structure so that it occupies a small volume of 9 x 8.8 x 5.4 mm(3). The proposed antenna consists of three arms namely, Main arm, Side arm 1, and Side arm 2. Each individual arm resonates corresponding to the /4 electrical length. Characterization of the antenna is carried out in the mobile environment as well as in user proximity. In the presence of mobile environment which includes liquid crystal display (LCD), Battery, RF components, and plastic housing, the isolation as well as reflection coefficient parameters deteriorated. To avoid the aggravation of S-parameters, two nonradiating folded shorting strips are connected between each antenna element and ground plane of PCB. This folded shorting strip not only improves the isolation between ports but also prevent the deterioration of reflection coefficient parameter. The total efficiency, envelope correlation coefficient, and multiplexing efficiency are studied in the user proximity. The optimized structure is fabricated and measured. The measured S-parameters cover WLAN (2.46-2.6 GHz), WiMAX (3.37-3.75 GHz), and HIPERLAN (5.2-5.87 GHz) based on -10 dB reflection coefficient and -24 dB isolation is achieved between antenna ports. This paper presents feasibility verification of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 MIMO system for 8K-UHD terrestrial broadcasting services. For a reliable performance evaluation, computer simulation, laboratory test, and field trial are conducted, and the tests' results are compared with the same performance metrics. Several physical layer configurations with various data rates from 63 Mbps to 113 Mbps are verified. The field trial results confirm that the ATSC 3.0 MIMO system can support data rates up to 113 Mbps within a 6 MHz bandwidth.

Comparison of closed-loop system identification techniques to quantify multi-joint human balance control

The incidence of impaired balance control and falls increases with age and disease and has a significant impact on daily life. Detection of early-stage balance impairments is difficult as many intertwined mechanisms contribute to balance control. Current clinical balance tests are unable to quantify these underlying mechanisms, and it is therefore difficult to provide targeted interventions to prevent falling. System identification techniques in combination with external disturbances may provide a way to detect impairments of the underlying mechanisms. This is especially challenging when studying multi joint coordination, i.e. the contribution of both the ankles and hips to balance control. With model simulations we compared various existing non-parametric and parametric system identification techniques in combination with external disturbances and evaluated their performance. All methods are considered multi-segmental (both the ankles and the hips contribute to maintaining balance) closed-loop balance control. Validation of the techniques was based on the prediction of time series and frequency domain data. Parametric system identification could not be applied in a straightforward manner in human balance control due to assumed model structure and biological noise in the system. Although the time series were estimated reliably, the dynamics in the frequency domain were not correctly estimated. Non-parametric system identification techniques did estimate the underlying dynamics of balance control reliably in both time and frequency domain. The choice of the external disturbance signal is a trade-off between frequency resolution and measurement time and thus depends on the specific research question and the studied population. Soft-output Successive Cancellation Stack Polar Decoder

Polar coding has been ratified for employment in the 3GPP New Radio standard and several soft-decision decoders achieved comparable performance to that of the state-of-the-art successive cancellation list decoder. Aiming for further improving the performance of the soft-decision polar decoders, we propose a soft-output successive cancellation stack (SSCS) polar decoder, which jointly exploits the benefits of the depth-first search of the stack decoder and the soft information output of the belief propagation decoder. This has the substantial benefit of facilitating soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoding and seamless iterative information exchange in turbo-style receivers. As a further contribution, we intrinsically amalgamate our SSCS decoder into polar-coded large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and conceive an iterative turbo receiver, operating on the basis of logarithmic likelihood ratios (LLRs). Our simulation results show that the proposed SSCS decoder is capable of outperforming the state-of-the-art SISO polar decoders, despite requiring a lower complexity at moderate to high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Additionally, compared with the non-iterative hard-output SCS decoder, our SSCS scheme attained 1.5 dB SNR gain at a bit error ratio level of 10(-5), when decoding the [256,512] polar code of a (64 x 64) MIMO system.

Construct MIMO process control system by using soft computing methods

The main objective of this study aims at multiple-input multiple-output ( MIMO) process mode. Based on the integrated concepts of statistical process control (SPC) and engineering process control (EPC), soft computing (SC) technique and statistical analysis technique are combined to modularize the relationship between process output and process input, so optimal yield can be derived and process quality can be improved. This study intended to construct a MIMO process control system with soft computing methods for prediction and parameter control and detailed the internal operation for each subsystem and relationship among one another. Besides correct prediction and diagnosis for the noise due to system deviation, it effectively controls process input and output as well as achieves process optimization.

We propose a mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission system with differential mode delay (DMD) independent low computational complexity MIMO processing. We adjusted the delay time of the delay units in the equalizer in accordance with the DMD value of the fiber, and the functional imperfection of the mode MUX/DEMUX can be compensated for with low computational complexity by using this technique. Finally, we investigated the crosstalk characteristics of the PLC-based MUX/DEMUX and achieved an experimental WDM-MDM transmission over the C-L band with low MIMO processing complexity even when using a few-mode fiber with a high DMD.

A 2x2 MIMO DVB-T2 System: Design, New Channel Estimation Scheme and Measurements With Polarization Diversity

The increasing interest in MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems has given rise to a prolific research activity in recent years. Both theoretical and practical issues have been studied. However, so far few MIMO testbeds or prototypes have been built for DVB-T or future standards. In this paper, a novel 2 x 2 MIMO testbed specifically designed for evaluating the performances of a DVB-T2 MIMO system is presented. The description of signal processing is detailed including a new scheme to estimate the MIMO channel matrix. Finally, measurement results with different polarization schemes are presented for typical scenarios, obtaining higher capacity in LoS situations using polarization diversity.

Performance Analysis and Optimization of Multihop MIMO Relay Networks in Short-Packet Communications

This work investigates the multiple-input multiple-output system in the context of the selective decode-and-forward multihop relay network under short-packet communications to facilitate not only ultra-reliability, but also low-latency communications. For the transmit and receive diversity techniques, we analyze the transmit antenna selection (TAS) and maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) schemes at the transmit side, whereas the selection-combining (SC) and maximum-ratio combining (MRC) schemes are leveraged at the receive side. For quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels and the finite-blocklength regime, we derive the approximate closed-form expressions of the end-to-end (e2e) block error rate (BLER) for the TAS/MRC, TAS/SC, and MRT/MRC schemes. The asymptotic performance in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime is derived, from which the comparison among diversity schemes in terms of the diversity order, e2e BLER loss, and SNR gap is provided. Furthermore, based on the asymptotic results, we develop power-allocation, relay-location, and joint simplified optimizations to minimize the asymptotic e2e BLER under the system constraints. The e2e latency and throughputs are also analyzed for the considered schemes. The correctness of our analysis is confirmed via Monte Carlo simulations.

A multiple-input multiple-output antenna array with two radiating elements having a wide bandwidth is reported in this work. Spatial diversity has been introduced to achieve the diversity gain and the array was kept compact by introducing five parasitic decoupling elements on the bottom of the substrate;each having a length equal to /2 at a specific frequency. Each resonant element offers a resonant bandwidth of 1 GHz starting from 3 GHz to 8.5 GHz. Good agreement between the measured and simulated results shows that the antenna system performs very well over the frequency range 3 GHz to 8.5 GHz. In addition, an isolation of more than 15 dB is achieved with the help of the parasitic elements, while keeping an edge-to-edge and center-to-center separation of 4 mm and 19 mm, respectively. The proposed antenna measures 26 x 40.5 mm(2), and it is suitable for handheld devices, personal digital assistants, next generation home entertainment systems, and robots. Performance of adaptive subcarrier modulated MIMO wireless optical communications in Malaga turbulence

Space diversity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system combined with the adaptive subcarrier modulation technique can effectively reduce the atmospheric channel fading effects. Malaga turbulent probability density function is obtained based on the MeijerG function. The asymptotic expression of average bit error rate in non-adaptive and adaptive modulated MIMO wireless optical systems are derived respectively, and M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) and M-ary differential phase shift keying (MDPSK) modulation are used in these two kinds of systems. Under moderate turbulence conditions, error performances are analyzed with numerical simulations between these two systems. The results show that the average bit error performance in the adaptive modulated system can be significantly better than the non-adaptive modulated system. But under the same conditions of modulation order and target bit error rate, error performance of non-adaptive modulation is easier to be affected by transmit and receive aperture number than adaptive modulation in MIMO system.
