In radar domain, digital beamforming radar is evolving as a promising radar technology as compared to conventional pulse-Doppler radar. The design of PD radar and DBF radar is done by keeping all the design parameters same, and its performance is compared in this work. Needless to say that PD radar uses only analog systems but DBF radar uses digital systems. DBF radar's performance is high, as compared to PD radar because of the use of digital techniques and MIMO antennas. The difference in signal to clutter ratio is 5.23 dB, i.e., SNR of DBF radar is three times greater than PD radar. The only limitation of DBF radar is being the hardware complexity, due to the use of multiple transceivers at each element of an antenna array, resulting in increased cost, size, weight, and power of the overall system.

This paper proposes a discrete cuckoo search algorithm, which is a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm used to solve real-world problems, and it is applied to the multiple-input and multiple-output symbol detection problem. However, simply applying the cuckoo search algorithm is problematic since it does not consider the convex and discrete nature of the symbol detection problem. MIMO-OFDM systems operating in the wireless doubly-selective channels rely on the pilot-assisted transmissions to acquire channel state information. Application of the two-dimensional filtering algorithms to channel estimation in the MIMO configurations is challenging due to the complexity considerations. Furthermore, different pilot structures employed in different spatial links necessitate development of scalable and reconfigurable estimator structures. The estimation scheme should also be robust to the changes in channel statistics and operation mode restrictions. To address these problems, robust estimator architecture is presented, which is based on the transform-domain processing and separable adaptive filtering modules.

The aim of this thesis is to develop and analyse single data set (SDS) detection algorithms that can utilise the advantages of widely-spaced (statistical) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar to increase their accuracy and performance. The algorithms make use of the observations obtained from multiple space-time adaptive processing (STAP) receivers and focus on covariance estimation and inversion to perform target detection. One of the main interferers for a Doppler radar has always been the radar’s own signal being reflected off the surroundings. The reflections of the transmitted waveforms from the ground and other stationary or slowly-moving objects in the background generate observations that can potentially raise false alarms. This creates the problem of searching for a target in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and highly-correlated (coloured) interference. Traditional STAP deals with the problem by using target-free training data to study this environment and build its characteristic covariance matrix. The data usually comes from range gates neighbouring the cell under test (CUT). In non-homogeneous or non-stationary environments, however, this training data may not reflect the statistics of the CUT accurately, which justifies the need to develop SDS methods for radar detection. The maximum likelihood estimation detector (MLED) and the generalised maximum likelihood estimation detector (GMLED) are two reduced-rank STAP algorithms that eliminate the need for training data when mapping the statistics of the background interference. The work in this thesis is largely based on these two algorithms. The first work derives the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) solution to the target detection problem when the MLED and GMLED are used in a multistatic radar scenario. Spatial Modulation (SM) is a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission technique which realizes low complexity implementations in wireless communication systems. Due the transmission principle of SM, only one Radio Frequency (RF) chain is required in the transmitter. Therefore, the complexity of the transmitter is lower compared to the complexity of traditional MIMO schemes, such as Spatial multipleXing (SMX). In addition, because of the single RF chain configuration of SM, only one Power Amplifier (PA) is required in the transmitter. Hence, SM has the potential to exhibit significant Energy Efficiency (EE) benefits. At the receiver side, due to the SM transmission mechanism, detection is conducted using a low complexity (single stream) Maximum Likelihood (ML) detector. However, despite the use of a single stream detector, SM achieves a multiplexing gain. A point-to-point closed-loop variant of SM is receive space modulation. In receive space modulation, the concept of SMis extended at the receiver side, using linear precoding with Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT). Even though receive space modulation does not preserve the single RF chain configuration of SM, due to the deployed linear precoding, it can be efficiently incorporated in a Space Division multiple Access (SDMA) or in a Virtual multiple-input multiple-output (VMIMO) architecture. Inspired by the potentials of SM, the objectives of this thesis are the evaluation of the EE of SM and its extension in different forms of MIMO communication. In particular, a realistic power model for the power consumption of a Base Station (BS) is deployed in order to assess the EE of SM in terms of Mbps/J. By taking into account the whole power supply of a BS and considering a Time Division multiple Access (TDMA) multiple access scheme, it is shown that SM is significantly more energy efficient compared to the traditional MIMO techniques. Spectrum scarcity is an obstacle to deploy emerging high speed wireless services that require more frequency spectrum. Cognitive radio (CR) appears as a promising solution for the spectral congestion by allowing spectrum sharing between primary and secondary users in which optimum utilization of the available spectrum is achieved. Efficient coex- istence between different users requires full knowledge of the activities in the spectrum of interest. Spectrum awareness is the terminology used to describe the techniques that detect the presence of signals in certain frequency bands, as well as identify the main pa- rameters of such signals, e. g., modulation scheme. These two tasks are commonly referred by the terms spectrum sensing and signal identification, respectively. Blind signal identification was initially used by military applications, such as radio surveillance and electronic warfare, and has recently been extended to civilian applica- tions. This problem becomes more challenging in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios due to the diverse transmission schemes that can be employed, e. g., spatial multi- plexing (SM) and space-time block codes (STBCs). A large number of studies have been carried out for developing blind signal identification algorithms in single-input single- output (SISO) scenarios, including identification of the modulation format and recogni- tion of single-carrier (SC) versus multicarrier transmissions. However, the problem of signal identification for MIMO systems remains at an incipient stage. In this dissertation, we develop novel algorithms to blindly identify the MIMO transmission scheme of the received signal. More specifically, in Chapters 2 and 3, we address the problem of identifying STBCs for the SC transmission. Unlike most of the work done to date, we show that STBC iden- tification can be performed using a single receive antenna. Four algorithms are proposed in Chapter 2 to identify SM and Alamouti STBC. The ever-growing demand for higher data rates and greater data capacity at lower cost has led the mobile cellular industry to investigate new physical layer techniques and possible utilization of unused spectrums at higher frequencies for next-generation cellular networks. Thus, exploitation of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum and non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) have been envisioned as the most promising enablers in meeting capacity demand. Due to the smaller wavelengths offered in mmWave frequencies, it is possible to deploy many antennas into a relatively smaller physical space in mmWave frequencies. This property leads to a promising integration between mmWave and massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) architecture to surmount the severe free-space pathloss thanks to the high directional beamforming gain. MmWave M-MIMO also offers significantly improved spectral efficiency by allowing simultaneous transmission of multiple data streams and utilizing the abundant and large bandwidth. However, conventional digital precoding causes excessive power consumption and hardware cost when directly adopted for mmWave M-MIMO since each antenna element necessitates its own radio-frequency (RF) chain. This problem can be addressed by beamspace MIMO (B-MIMO) because it can reduce the required RF chain by taking advantage of inherent sparsity in mmWave channels and applying a proper beam selection. On the other hand, NOMA enhances spectral efficiency by multiplexing multiple users’ signals in the power domain using the same time and frequency resources, where the detection of multiple users’ signals is performed by successive interference cancellation (SIC). The research has concentrated on the beam selection problem, precoding design in BMIMO, and spectral/energy efficiency enhancement in mmWave M-MIMO and NOMA. We summarize the enabling technologies for broadband millimeter-wave communication at W-band. These enabling technologies include photonics-aided broadband signal generation, high-spectral efficiency modulation format, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) reception, high gain antenna, optical and electrical multi-carrier modulation, antenna polarization multiplexing and multi-band multiplexing, advanced digital signal processing (DSP), and heterodyne detection. Based on these advanced technologies, we have realized over 400G wireless signal transmission and over 2.5-km wireless delivery with a bit rate up to 50Gb/s at W-band.

This paper proposes a multiple-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access scheme including channel state information (CSI) quantization and feedback, user clustering, signal superposition coding, transmit beamforming, and successive interference cancellation at receivers under a general limited CSI feedback framework for frequency duplex division systems. Given a combination of system parameters, we conduct a mathematically strict performance analysis of the considered system, and obtain a closed-form lower bound on the ergodic rate of each user without assuming any extreme for system parameters, which has never been obtained before. Then, we jointly optimize two key parameters, i.e., transmit power and the number of feedback bits allocated to each user, and propose low-complexity closed-form solutions. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify our theoretical results and to illustrate the advantages in accuracy and performance over some existing related results under practical conditions.

This paper considers reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted point-to-point multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, where a transmitter communicates with a receiver through an RIS. Based on the main target of reducing the bit error rate (BER) and therefore enhancing the communication reliability, we study different model-based and data-driven (autoencoder) approaches. In particular, we consider a model-based approach that optimizes both active and passive optimization variables. We further propose a novel end-to-end data-driven framework, which leverages the recent advances in machine learning. The neural networks presented for conventional signal processing modules are jointly trained with the channel effects to minimize the bit error detection. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed data-driven approach can learn to encode the transmitted signal via different channel realizations dynamically. In addition, the data-driven approach not only offers a significant gain in the BER performance compared to the other state-of-the-art benchmarks but also guarantees the performance when perfect channel information is unavailable.
