A combination of multiple-inputmultipleoutput (MIMO) signal processing with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is regarded as a promising solution for enhancing the performance of next generation wireless local area network (WLAN) systems. However, like OFDM, one main disadvantage of MIMO-OFDM is that the signals transmitted on different antennas might exhibit a prohibitively large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Partial transmit sequence (PTS) provides attractive PAPR reduction performance in OFDM or MIMO-OFDM. Unfortunately, it leads to prohibitively large computational complexity. In this paper, types of low-complexity PTS schemes are proposed to reduce the PAPR for MIMO-OFDM systems that use Firefly algorithm (FA) and space-frequency block codes (SFBC). Simulation results show that FA based on PTS can reduce computational complexity dramatically and achieve better PAPR reduction performance compared to ordinary PTS.

We study the performance of space-time block coding in terms of different transmission matrices over Nakagami-m fading channels in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) environments. A closed-form expression for the exact symbol error rate (SER) of orthogonal space-time block coding (OSTBC) over independent identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels can be derived by means of the equivalent single-input single-output (SISO) model. The exact SERs of OSTBC with M-PSK and M-QAM modulations are expressed in terms of the moment generating function (MGF) of instantaneous SNR as well as the higher transcendental functions. In this paper, we provide performance evaluation results of several codes of OSTBC with the closed-form expressions;also, Monte Carlo simulation results are given, which demonstrate the accuracy of closed-form solutions. In addition, some new observations on the performance results of different code matrices are made.

An interference aware precoding scheme based on limited channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered for its use in the downlink of a cellular system. The transmitter precoder used is based on an MMSE-ZF criterion in order to maximize the user rate while the interference to other users is reduced. The proposed scheme also exploits the network topology, so that each BS can categorize the users into two groups, according to the level of interference that the BS is introducing in those users. On the receiver end, each user makes use of the whole channel state information at the receiver (CSIR) by employing an MMSE filter. This approach enables a reduction in the complexity of the system, while improving the performance of the whole network.

We propose an iterative detection scheme for Turbo-BLAST system with optimal power allocation in the presence of channel state information imperfection. The proposed scheme uses the channel estimation matrix for detection and treats the interference caused by channel estimation errors and additive white Gaussian noise as equivalent noise where the channel estimation matrix and the statistical characteristic of channel estimation errors are necessitated. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm is effective to improve bit error rate(BER) performance through iterative detection for modified Turbo-BLAST system with optimal power allocation in the presence of imperfect channel state information.

This paper presents a hardware implementation of a detector for spatial modulation multiple-input multiple-output (SM-MIMO) communication systems. The proposed detector employs the signal-vector-based list detection method, but the original method is modified to realize a low-complexity implementation. In addition, the proposed detector is designed based on the dual data path architecture, in which antenna selection and the symbol detection are performed separately with different precision in order to reduce the hardware complexity while achieving a near-optimal error-rate performance. The proposed detector is implemented with 87.4K logic gates in a 0.18-um CMOS technology, and its throughput is 858 Mbps for 8 × 4 64 QAM SM-MIMO systems when the operating frequency is 286 MHz.

We analyze the information-theoretic security of transmit-receive diversity systems in the presence of multiantenna eavesdroppers. Specifically, exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions are derived for the secrecy outage probability of such systems in a Rayleigh fading environment. Based on the latter expression, the corresponding secrecy diversity order and secrecy array gain are determined. Numerical results are presented to verify the analytical results and to investigate the impact of various system parameters, including the antenna configuration and the number of eavesdroppers.

In this paper, the concept of three-dimensional (3-D) space-time shift keying (STSK) is introduced, which incorporates 3-D constellations into conventional STSK systems. The new 3-D STSK techniques enjoy better error resilience than their two-dimensional (2-D) counterparts. Firstly, based on different sampling rates, two three-dimensional (3-D) STSK schemes referred to as R2 3-D STSK and R3 3-D STSK, respectively, are proposed. Both schemes show improved effective spectral efficiency (ESE) than 2-D STSK at relatively low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Further, the optimal combinations of the constellation coordinates for R2 3-D STSK are derived by maximising the minimal determinant of the so-called difference matrices, yielding a better system performance. In addition, a joint optimisation mechanism utilising the simplified conjugate gradient (SCG) algorithm is devised for 3-D STSK, aiming for further enhancing the achievable system performance. Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed schemes, exhibiting the design tradeoffs concerning date rate, link robustness and computational complexity.
