Compact dual band-notched UWB multiple-input multiple-output antenna for portable applications

A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with dual band-notched characteristics for portable applications is proposed in this article. The antenna is fed by coplanar waveguide and has four feeding ports with the size of 50 x 50 mm(2). By etching split-ring resonator slots on the radiation patches, dual notches filtering out the 3.5 GHz WiMAX and 5.5 GHz WLAN bands can be achieved. The design process is given step-by-step and the band-notched mechanism is studied with the surface current distributions. Moreover, the band-notched characteristics of cylindrical conformal antenna is analyzed in this article. The experimental results show that the proposed antenna can be widely used in UWB communication system with good radiation characteristics, stable gain, and low envelope correlation coefficient. The idea embodied in this article can also be used to guide for the research of band-notched conformal UWB MIMO antenna.

Investigation on decoupling of wide band wearable multiple-input multiple-output antenna elements using microstrip neutralization line

An investigation to enhance the decoupling between the elements of a compact wide band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is presented in this communication. A microstrip neutralization line (NL) is designed on the top of antenna surface to enhance the port isolation. The geometry is embedded on a jeans material to be apposite for the on-body wearable applications. The antenna covers the frequency spectra from 3.14 to 9.73 GHz (around 102.4%) and fulfills the bandwidth requirements of WiMAX (3.2-3.8 GHz), WLAN (5.15-5.35/5.72-5.85 GHz), C band downlink-uplink (3.7-4.2/5.9-6.425 GHz), downlink defense (7.2-7.7 GHz), and ITU (8-8.5 GHz) bands. The port isolation is found to be more than 32 dB over the whole application bands. The antenna is appraised in a rich scattering environment with very minimal envelope correlation coefficient (ECC < 0.12) and great amount of diversity gain (DG > 9.8). The proposed MIMO antenna system is able to achieve the channel capacity loss (CCL) of less than 0.2 BPS/Hz throughout the whole operating band. The proposed structure is etched on an area of 30 x 50 mm(2). The simulated and measured performances of the proposed antenna are in well-matched state.

Metal-frame-integrated eight-element multiple-input multiple-output antenna array in the long term evolution bands 41/42/43 for fifth generation smartphones

A metal-frame-integrated eight-antenna array operating in the long term evolution bands 41/42/43 (2.496GHz-2.69GHz, 3.4 GHz-3.8 GHz) for future fifth generation multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) applications in smartphones is presented and discussed. The proposed eight-antenna MIMO array is formed by integrating four identical building blocks, each of which consists two dual-mode monopole antenna elements with a neutralization line (NL) embedded in between. Part of the metal frame is exploited to increase the effective resonant length of the monopole antenna. By using the wideband NL, two transmission dips can be generated, and thus an improved isolation (>10 dB) is achieved. The proposed antenna array was simulated and experimentally tested. Good antenna efficiency (>44%) and low envelope correlation coefficient (<0.2) were obtained in the bands of interest. In an 8x8 MIMO system with 20dB signal-to-noise ratio, the calculated ergodic channel capacity was as high as 38bps/Hz in the low band, and 38.3 bps/Hz in the high band. Details of the proposed antenna array are described. The simulated, measured, and calculated results are presented.

A novel wearable free-wideband antenna circularly polarized suited for biotelemetric devices with multiple-input multiple-output and high data rate capacity

A small circularly polarized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is demonstrated here as a biometric gadget for consumers. In this article, the authors introduce a structure for antennas that consists of four essential parts that are orthogonally arranged opposite each other. The transmitted signal has around 10 db wideband response at 2.22 GHz, referred to as fractional band-widths (FBW) which is 91.08 achieved when operated in free space. Also included is a 10-db transmitter with a 2.44-GHz band-width, a FBW of 92.56%, and it can be used on wearables on human bodies. The authors have therefore calculated frequency ranges that cover the most important and unlicensed free of cost open-source band-width of 2.4 to 2.48 GHz that is also known as ISM band (industrial, scientific, and medical) range. When operated in free space and in human body proximity of 5 MM, the antenna also operates at 1.3 GHz, which is approximately 54.16% fractional band-width, as well as 1.04 GHz, which is approximately 43.33% fractional band-width. An antenna that is finalized in free-space (or within 5 mm of a human body) has an optimum envelop correlation coefficient (ECC) beneath 0.22 (0.24), and an optimal gain of about 3 dB.

Design and SAR Analysis of Wearable UWB MIMO antenna with Enhanced Isolation Using a Parasitic Structure

This communication presents a design and analysis of wearable two element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) application. The antenna design consists of two square radiators having vertical and horizontal slots are placed on the front end, whereas a back-to-back E-shaped stub is placed in-between the radiators at the back end. To improve port isolation between the radiators, a novel back-to-back E-shaped stub is placed between the radiators. A partial ground plane is etched in the proposed design to achieve wide bandwidth. The proposed antenna is built on the jean substrate which is economical and readily available. The two element antenna is compact and occupies an area of 55 x 35 mm(2). The developed antenna is economical and suitable at various frequencies of operations such as downlink-uplink WiMAX (3.2-3.85 GHz), WLAN (2.4-2.484 GHz/5.15-5.35 GHz/5.72-5.825 GHz), and C-band (3.7-4.2 GHz/5.925-6.425 GHz). To study the suitability of the proposed antenna for wearable applications, the SAR analysis is carried at different frequencies by keeping at various distances of separation between the human body model and the antenna. It is observed that the antenna's SAR is less than the limit of 1.6 W/kg over 1-g of tissue at all frequencies of operation. The minimum average SAR over the 1-g volume of tissue at 9 GHz is 1.27 W/kg. For the entire operating range, the envelope correlation coefficient is less than 0.06 which proves its suitability for MIMO. The simulation and measured results are in good agreement with each other.

Mutual coupling reduction using near-zero ε and μ metamaterial-based superstrate for an MIMO application

Here, a near-zero permittivity (epsilon) and permeability (mu) metamaterial superstrate is presented as a decoupling structure for a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna. The proposed design offers peak isolation of 41 dB with reduced edge separation of 0.042 lambda(o) at the resonating frequency. To verify the simulation results, the prototype of the proposed superstrate and antenna is fabricated and tested. The two-element MIMO antenna has -10 dB impedance band of 5.5-5.92 GHz with a peak measured gain of 7.41 dBi and efficiency above 78%. The measurement results ensure an isolation enhancement of 30 dB with a correlation coefficient of <0.26 within the operating band. The proposed method offers a good design technique for high gain and a closely packed MIMO antenna system for WLAN applications.

Eight-element-based MIMO antenna with CP behaviour for modern wireless communication

In this work, an eight-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with circular polarisation (CP) ability is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of eight off-centred fed modified rectangular open-loop resonating radiators. CP behaviour is realised by utilising a narrow slit on the loop and a modified ground plane. Measurement reveals that the proposed CP-MIMO antenna occupies an overlapping 10 dB return loss bandwidth and a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth over the frequency span of 5-6 GHz with inter-element isolation > 8 dB. Essential diversity and multiplexing performances are estimated intuitively by means of the envelope correlation coefficient and ergodic channel capacity, which lie within their adequate range. To ensure its applicability in user terminal devices and confirm the use of other electronic circuitry, the antenna performances are also investigated in the presence of a conducting sheet which is commonly grounded with the antenna ground plane.

Compact broadband multi-input multi-output antenna covering 3300 to 6000 MHz band for 5G mobile terminal applications

In this letter, a compact multi-input multi-output antenna operating at 3300 to 6000 MHz band is presented for 5G mobile terminals. The antenna includes four vertically placed blocks. Each block consists of two driven monopole elements and one parasitic ground branch. The parasitic branch is shared by both elements. It not only serves as radiator, but also is helpful to improve the port isolation in the lower band. By merging the multiple resonances provided by the driven monopole and the parasitic branch, wideband performance is achieved with a small block size of 28 x 4.2 mm(2). A prototype is fabricated and measured. The measured -6 dB bandwidth covers 3340 to 6360 MHz band, with port isolation higher than 10 dB. The radiation efficiency of all the ports is higher than 45% across the band.

Dual-Mode Radar Sensor for Indoor Environment Mapping

In this paper, we introduce mapping results in an indoor environment based on our own developed dual-mode radar sensor. Our radar system uses a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) with a center frequency of 62 GHz and a multiple-input multiple-output antenna system. In addition, the FMCW radar sensor we designed is capable of dual-mode detection, which alternately transmits two waveforms using different bandwidths within one frame. The first waveform is for long-range detection, and the second waveform is for short-range detection. This radar system is mounted on a small robot that moves in indoor environments such as rooms or hallways, and the radar and the robot send and receive necessary information to each other. The radar estimates the distance, velocity, and angle information of targets around the radar-equipped robot. Then, the radar receives information about the robot's motion from the robot, such as its speed and rotation angle. Finally, by combining the motion information and the detection results, the radar-equipped robot maps the indoor environment while finding its own position. Compared to the actual map data, the radar-based mapping is effectively achieved through the radar system we developed.

New design of UWB-MIMO antenna with enhanced isolation and dual-band rejection for WiMAX and WLAN systems

In this work, a new design of wide-band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with improved isolation and dual-band rejection is proposed for wireless systems operating over the entire ultra-wide-band (UWB), X-band, and Ku-band (3-18GHz). The proposed four-element UWB-MIMO antenna is fabricated on Rogers RT/Duroid-5880 substrate with dimension of 73x73x0.79mm(3). It achieves high isolation (>20dB) between antenna elements without using any decoupling structures. In order to prevent interference problems from nearby WiMAX (3.3-3.8GHz) and WLAN (5.1-5.8GHz) systems, a C-shaped stub is embedded in the radiating patch and a pair of U-shaped parasitic strips is inserted beside the feed line in the single element design. The effectiveness of the proposed design is demonstrated by investigating measurement and simulation results, and comparing them with other existing designs. The results show that the proposed design has an input reflection coefficient <-10dB, a mutual coupling <-20dB, and an omnidirectional radiation pattern across the bandwidth of interest (3-18GHz) excluding the two rejected bands. Also, the proposed design exhibits high diversity performance in terms of envelope correlation coefficient (ECC <0.0015) and channel capacity loss (CCL<0.3bits/s/Hz). This reveals the effectiveness of the proposed design in wide-band wireless applications such as satellite communications and microwave medical imaging.
