Adopting the eigen threshold(ET) criterion, a multi-target detection algorithm for MIMO radar with arbitrarily correlated observation channels is analyzed. Firstly, we derive the close-form of the eigenvalue, and the eigenvectors for the MIMO radar system having an arbitrary distributed array-target configuration based on power spectral density function, then, we establish the MIMO radar detector Adopting the eigen threshold(ET) criterion. The Method proposed avoids the Multidimensional Matrix inversion and alleviates the computational burden. Simulation results show that the correlation of the observation channels will reduce the detection performance. The algorithm can be utilized to compute and analyze the detection performance of a MIMO radar system for any given transmitter/receiver geometry, the computer simulation results also show that the MIMO ET has better performance than phase array detectors.

Coherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is characterized by having a transmit antenna array and a receive antenna array located in a pseudo-monostatic configuration such that desired target returns from the far-field are coherent. Each element (or subarray) of the transmit array radiates an independent, ideally orthogonal, waveform. Such a radar offers the ability to digitally form beams, possibly adaptively, on both transmit and receive within the receive signal processor. The fundamental advantages of MIMO radar over modern single-input multiple-output (SIMO) radar can be demonstrated with a multiple-input single-output (MISO) radar. A MISO radar testbed with up to four transmit channels and a single receiver was built to evaluate the various classes of MIMO waveforms. Results of these tests are presented.

The digital radio frequency memory repeat jammer, which replicates transmit signals and transmits them back to a radar receiver to mimic real targets, is a notably efficient electronic countermeasure device. It has been pointed out that the colocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar has an additional advantage in combatting with repeat jammers whose amplifiers operate in the saturation mode and thus can only transmit constant-modulus waveforms, because the amplitude modulation of angular waveforms is difficult to simulate for them. Two waveform design criteria are presented, and both suppress a mutual correlation between angular waveforms and corresponding constant-modulus jamming signals. The two approaches differ on whether the receive beamforming operation is considered. Numerical results validate that the two approaches can both efficiently suppress the mutual correlation and that the second approach outperforms the first approach in terms of the peak sidelobe level.

This paper addresses the problem of direction finding for bistutic MAIO radar in the presence of unknown spatially colored noise. Taking the stationary property of the colored noise into consideration, a covariance differencing-based method is presented. The proposed method has computational complexity very close to that of ESPRIT. Besides, it can suppress the colored noise without any virtual aperture loss. Therefore, it improves the accuracy of angle estimation compared with the existing de-noising algorithms. Numerical experiments are provided to examine the effectiveness and improvement of our algorithm.

This paper addresses the problem of adaptive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar detection in heterogeneous environment with compound-Gaussian clutter. The clutter covariances are assumed to be random and different from one transmit/receive pair to another with a priori knowledge about the environment. A two-step strategy is employed to design adaptive detector. Firstly, we obtain the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector by assuming the known covariance matrices. Then, we derive the maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator of the matrices by exploiting the Bayesian technique, and replace the given covariance matrices in the obtained GLRT detector with MAP estimates. Finally, we evaluate the proposed adaptive Bayesian detector via numerical simulations.

In this paper, a fast constant modulus multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar waveform design method is proposed for interference mitigation. In order to reduce the computational burden of optimizing waveform, a new transmit scheme is presented, which can decouple the spatial part and temporal part of the waveform design. Focusing on the spatial property of waveform, a novel cost function is proposed to minimize the maximum transmit power difference between interference region and target region. With the constant modulus constraint, the proposed cost function is intractable. To further improve the computational efficiency, a two-step strategy is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution, which decomposes the original problem into a set of parallel beamformers design and a linear programming (LP) problem about the support time of beamformers. To optimize the beamformers efficiently, the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm and its acceleration version are employed to tackle this problem. Numerical results show the efficiency of the proposed method.

In this paper, we study the problem of embedding communication symbols into the fast-time waveform transmission of the transmit beamspace-based multiple-input multiple-output radar, wherein an improved strategy using frequency-hopping (FH) code selection is devised. The strategy is developed based on the considerations of the radar ambiguity function, the communication symbol error rate and waveform orthogonality. Using the definition of distance that represents the repetition of FH codes, it firstly generates an optimal dictionary with the largest distances. Then, it properly positions the FH codes in all code vectors by means of optimization techniques. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed design.

In this paper, a unitary Nystrom method for joint direction of departure (DOD) and direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of noncircular sources in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed. Firstly, the noncircularity of the signals is used to enlarge the virtual aperture for improving the estimation performance. Then the real-valued signal subspace is achieved by using the unitary transformation and Nystrom method, and finally the DOAs are estimated by combing with conjugate unitary ESPRIT (CU-ESPRIT) algorithm. The proposed method not only achieves the signal subspace without the estimation and eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) of the covariance matrix, but also involves real-valued processing. Thus, compared with the conventional conjugate ESPRIT and conjugate unitary ESPRIT algorithms, the proposed method has lower computational complexity. In addition, the proposed method provides comparable angle estimation performance. Simulation results are used to verify the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method.

Sparse array designs have focused mostly on angular resolution (mainlobe width), peak sidelobe level and directivity factor of virtual arrays for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. The notion of the MIMO radar virtual array is based on the direct path assumption in that the direction-of-departure (DOD) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) of the targets are equal. However, the DOD and DOA of targets in multipath scenarios are likely to be very different. The identification of multipath targets requires DOD-DOA imaging using the transmit and receive arrays, not the virtual array. To improve the imaging of both direct path and multipath targets, we introduce several new criteria for MIMO radar sparse linear array (SLA) designs for multipath scenarios. Under the new criteria, we adopt a cyclic optimization strategy under a coordinate descent framework to design the MIMO SLAs. We present several numerical examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

In this paper, an operative radar network based on microwave photonics techniques is presented. The proposed system employs a centralized architecture, with a central unit driving multiple remote radar peripherals. The wide distribution of the peripherals, the possibility to operate in dual-band mode and the coherent management of the transmitted and received signals are discussed. The surveillance system is deployed in a real freight port, exploiting the available optical fiber network, for the monitoring of the maritime traffic. Preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of exploiting geometric and frequency diversity on the target detection. Finally, the first experimental multi-sensor, multi-band inverse synthetic aperture radar target imaging results are presented.
