Angle estimation in MIMO radar using a new sparse representation approach

Existing direction of arrival (DOA) estimation methods in multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) radar systems will encounter the performance degradation in the cases of few snapshots, low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), closely spaced targets, or strongly correlated sources. To improve it, this paper develops a new sparse representation-based DOA estimation method. The main contributions are as follows: i) we construct a new real-valued double weighted -norm minimisation model;ii) we derive an improved reduced-dimension technique to enhance estimation accuracy;and iii) we design optimal and sparse weights carefully to improve the corresponding estimation accuracy. Finally, the effectiveness and theoretical analysis of the presented approach are verified by extensive numerical simulations, which proves that the new algorithm performs well at low SNR and with a small number of snapshots as well as at the coherent source case.

Adaptive detection of moving target with MIMO radar in heterogeneous environments based on Rao and Wald tests

This paper deals with the adaptive detection of moving targets for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar in heterogeneous clutter environments. Two new detectors based on Rao and Wald criteria are developed using an ad hoc design procedure. Precisely, we first obtain the Rao and Wald tests by assuming the known target velocity and the known structure of the clutter. Then, we modify them by performing a numerical optimization with respect to the target velocity and replacing the clutter covariance matrix with a proper estimate. With a limited number of secondary data set, a class of covariance matrix estimators, defined as the geometric barycenters of some basic covariance matrix estimates obtained from the available secondary data set, are proposed by exploiting the characteristic of the positive-definite matrix space. Finally, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed detectors and covariance matrix estimators. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Joint DOD-DOA estimation using combined ESPRIT-MUSIC approach in MIMO radar

A new method for joint direction of arrival (DOA)-direction of departure (DOD) estimation in bistatic MIMO radar is proposed. This method, based on the decomposition of the 2D direction finding into double 1D direction finding, uses the ESPRIT method to estimate the DOD and the Root-MUSIC for the DOA estimation. Some simulation results are presented to verify the efficiency of this approach.

Convex optimisation based transmit beampattern synthesis for MIMO radar

A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar allows its antenna elements to transmit multiple signal waveforms. This waveform diversity offers enhanced flexibility in transmit beampattern synthesis and signal design. Two algorithms where the transmit is synthesised beampattern by optimising transmitted signal covariance matrix is proposed. In the first algorithm, a method to achieve a desired beampattern by reformulating the design problem as an unconstrained semi-definite programming problem is proposed. Second, a method for beampattern synthesis such that the cross correlation beampattern, which is the correlation between the signals at different target locations, is minimised and at the same time the sidelobe levels are constrained to be lower than a threshold value proposed. These design problems are modelled as convex optimisation problem and are solved using Matlab based toolbox CVX.

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar recently has attracted the attention of engineers and researchers. MIMO radar performance is based on the orthogonality of the transmitted waveforms. A receiver optimisation method is proposed to suppress cross-correlation rather than finding orthogonal waveforms. The method considers two transmitters and is based on the minimum variance distorsionless response (MVDR) algorithm to minimise cross-correlation while maintaining the level of auto-correlation. Performance is evaluated by simulation using random phase code sequences. The proposed method is well suited for single target tracking, or slow moving target detection.

Computational Efficient DOA, DOD, and Doppler Estimation Algorithm for MIMO radar

Joint direction-of-arrival (DOA), direction-of departure (DOD), and Doppler estimation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar usually are too time-consuming to implement because of high-dimensional searching procedures. This letter proposes a computational efficient algorithm for MIMO radar joint DOA, DOD, and Doppler estimation, which adopts an unstructured maximum likelihood method to sequentially estimate the Doppler, DOD, and DOA by three one-dimensional searching procedures based on the extended invariance principle. Numerical results validate the effectiveness together with its superiorities over conventional maximum likelihood algorithms.

Motion compensation for TDM MIMO radar by sparse reconstruction

A motion-compensation method that applies sparse reconstruction (SR) to reconstruct the Doppler spectrum of targets based on a random transmission scheme is proposed for time-division multiplexing (TDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Since the random transmission can eliminate the characteristic of periodic time-delay in conventional TDM scheme between transmit cycles, the angle information of a target is not affected by its motion. Therefore, the angle and velocity are no longer coupled with each other and can be estimated separately. This method not only overcome the space-frequency coupling problem but also enhances the unambiguous Doppler interval. Another advantage is that the method is valid even when the estimated target velocity is ambiguous. The results reported here offer the possibility of utilising SR to solve conventional TDM MIMO problems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by experimental results.

Direction Finding in Bistatic MIMO radar With Direction-Dependent Mutual Coupling

Mutual coupling (MC) effect exists extensively in sensor array, and it will adversely affect the direction finding in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In the previous works, the MC effects in MIMO radar are always modeled with direction-independent MC matrices, which may not be guaranteed in practice. In this letter, we investigate into the issue of target localization and sensor calibration in bistatic MIMO radar in the presence of direction-dependent MC. A multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-like methodology is proposed. It links angle estimation to a quadratic optimization problem, which is solved via Lagrange multiplier method. The proposed method is suitable for arbitrary sensor geometry. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Computationally Efficient DOA Estimation Algorithm for MIMO radar With Imperfect Waveforms

Orthogonal waveforms are often desirable to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems. Unfortunately, the orthogonality may not be always guaranteed in practice. In this letter, we consider the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem in colocated MIMO radar with imperfect waveforms, and a new methodology is presented. The noiseless cross-covariance matrix is obtained by utilizing the spatial cross-correlation technique. DOAs are obtained via reduced-dimension multiple signal classification (RD-MUSIC). In contrast to the state-of-the-art matrix completion (MC) algorithm, the proposed RD-MUSIC method is computationally more efficient and may have an estimation performance more accurate than the existing MC approach. The numerical results show the improvement in the proposed scheme.
