Space-time coding waveform design for MIMO radar transmit beamforming with minimum MFL

In this paper, we utilize a space-time coding (STC) scheme to synthesize the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar transmit beampattern and meanwhile consider the matched filtering loss (MFL) of equivalent signal in waveform design. To solve the MFL optimization problem, we propose a simulated annealing based (SA-based) algorithm to effectively find the optimal solution of STC waveform matrix. Our STC method for waveform design has suppressed the fluctuation of equivalent signal so that has the advantage of achieving the minimum MFL nearly, compared to the conventional methods for constant-envelope constraint waveform design (e.g. cyclic algorithm (CA) method). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Spatial-temporal waveform design for MIMO radar without approximating the covariance matrix

In this study, a transmit waveform design method based on spatial-temporal optimisation for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed. The goal is not only to design the waveforms for beampattern matching, but also to minimise the autocorrelation sidelobes of the spatial synthesis signals of interested direction. Especially, to synthesise the constant envelope waveform directly, an improved sequential convex algorithm is proposed to tackle the non-convex problem in spatial optimisation. Then the autocorrelation sidelobes are reduced by using the steepest descent algorithm in temporal optimisation. Finally, the authors assess the effectiveness of the proposed technique through numerical simulations in comparison with the traditional and the alternating direction method of multipliers method.

Reweighted smoothed l₀-norm based DOA estimation for MIMO radar

In this paper, a reweighted smoothed l(0)-norm algorithm is proposed for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in monostatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. The proposed method firstly performs the vectorization operation on the covariance matrix, which is calculated from the latest received data matrix obtained by a reduced dimensional transformation. Then a weighted matrix is introduced to transform the covariance estimation errors into a Gaussian white vector, and the proposed method further constructs the other reweighted vector to enhance sparse solution. Finally, a reweighted smoothed l(0)-norm minimization framework with a reweighted continuous function is designed, based on which the sparse solution is obtained by using a decreasing parameter sequence and the steepest ascent algorithm. Consequently, DOA estimation is accomplished by searching the spectrum of the solution. Compared with the conventional l(1)-norm minimization based methods, the proposed reweighted smoothed l(0)-norm algorithm significantly reduces the computation time of DOA estimation. The proposed method is about two orders of magnitude faster than the l(1)-SVD, reweighted l(1)-SVD and RV l(1)-SRACV algorithms. Meanwhile, it provides higher spatial angular resolution and better angle estimation performance. Simulation results are used to verify the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method. multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar has become a thriving subject of research during the past decades. In the MIMO radar context, it is sometimes more accurate to model the radar clutter as a non Gaussian process, more specifically, by using the spherically invariant random process (SIRP) model. In this paper, we focus on the estimation and performance analysis of the angular spacing between two targets for the MIMO radar under the SIRP clutter. First, we propose an iterative maximum likelihood as well as an iterative maximum a posteriori estimator, for the target's spacing parameter estimation in the SIRP clutter context. Then we derive and compare various Cramer-Rao-like bounds (CRLBs) for performance assessment. Finally, we address the problem of target resolvability by using the concept of angular resolution limit (ARL), and derive an analytical, closed-form expression of the ARL based on Smith's criterion, between two closely spaced targets in a MIMO radar context under SIRP clutter. For this aim we also obtain the non-matrix, closed-form expressions for each of the CRLBs. Finally, we provide numerical simulations to assess the performance of the proposed algorithms, the validity of the derived ARL expression, and to reveal the ARL's insightful properties. Deceptive jamming suppression with frequency diverse MIMO radar

Simulated false targets cannot be easily discriminated and suppressed with traditional radar systems, especially for the mainbeam deceptive jamming. In this work, we explore the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar with frequency diverse array (FDA) as the transmit array and study its ability to suppress the deceptive jamming in joint transmit-receive domain. In FDA-MIMO radar, the steering vector is dependent on both range and angle. This implies that the false targets can be Suppressed due to the mismatch in either range or angle. In particular, even the mainbeam deceptive jamming can be handled with the FDA-MIMO radar. The effectiveness of our proposed scheme in suppressing jamming under different scenarios is demonstrated via computer simulations. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

For a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar system adopting the Neyman-Pearson (NP) criterion, a detection algorithm for MIMO radar with arbitrarily correlated observation channels in the presence of possible Non-Gaussian clutter-plus-noise is analyzed. Simulation results show that both the correlation of the observation channels and the correlation of the clutter-plus-noise will reduce the detection performance. The algorithm can be utilized to compute and analyze the detection performance of a MIMO radar system for any given transmitter/receiver geometry and varying levels of correlation in the target.

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar transmits multiple-coded signals. In matched filter receiver, coded signals are required to have very good auto-and cross-correlation properties. These conditions are difficult to fulfill simultaneously when the lengths of the codes are short and there are many transmit antennas. In this correspondence, a receive filter matrix is designed using quadratic optimization method. The integrated correlations between the transmitted codes and the receive filter matrix in the area around zero shift are constrained under a prescribed level and the output noise power is minimized. A closed form solution is obtained. This integrated sidelobe level (ISL) method is computationally more efficient compared with the peak sidelobe level (PSL) method.

In this manuscript, the problem of detecting multiple targets and jointly estimating their spatial coordinates (namely, the range, the Doppler and the direction of arrival of their electromagnetic echoes) in a colocated multiple-input multiple-output radar system employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is investigated. It is well known its optimal solution, namely the joint maximum likelihood estimator of an unknown number of targets, is unfeasible because of its huge computational complexity. Moreover, until now, sub-optimal solutions have not been proposed in the technical literature. In this manuscript a novel approach to the development of reduced complexity solutions is illustrated. It is based on the idea of separating angle estimation from range-Doppler estimation, and of exploiting known algorithms for solving these two sub-problems. A detailed analysis of the accuracy and complexity of various detection and estimation methods based on this approach is provided. Our numerical results evidence that one of these methods is able to approach optimal performance in the maximum likelihood sense with a limited computational effort in different scenarios.

FDA-MIMO radar With Long-Baseline Transmit Array Using ESPRIT

The frequency diverse array (FDA) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar combined with long-baseline transmit array (LBTA-FDA-MIMO) is presented for high accuracy direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, and the transmit array is designed in the form of a four-antenna interferometer in this letter. However, the ambiguities of both angle and range exist at the same time. To deal with this problem, a joint-disambiguation method based on ESPRIT is proposed and the uniqueness theorem is proved. The main idea of this method is that the unambiguous-rough-estimation for angle is used to solve the ambiguities of fine-estimation expressions coupled with angle and range. Compared with FDA-MIMO radar, the LBTA-FDA-MIMO radar significantly improves the angle estimation accuracy, and interestingly, it also improves the ranging accuracy via simulations.

Optimisation of complete complementary codes in MIMO radar system

The novelty of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is to improve the performance of radar utilising spatial diversity and waveform diversity. Proposed is the optimisation design of complete complementary sequence (CC-S) for MIMO radar based on channel capacity with the clutter statistical properties known. The method obtains the optimised CC-S through maximising the channel capacity of MIMO radar. The result shows that the optimised CC-S is a function of the clutter covariance matrix. Finally, the method from the information theoretical point of view is verified.
