A balanced sensor scheduling for multitarget localization in a distributed multiple-input multiple-output radar network

In this article, we consider the problem of optimally selecting a subset of transmitters from a transmitter set available to a multiple-input and multiple-output radar network. The aim is to minimize the location estimation error of underlying targets under a power constraint. We formulate it as a minimum-variance estimation problem and show that the underlying variance reduction function is submodular. From the properties of submodularity, we present a balanced selection policy which minimizes the worst-case error value using a minimax strategy. A greedy algorithm with guaranteed performance with respect to optimal solutions is given to efficiently implement the scheduling policy. The effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated in simulated examples.

Interference cancellation in co-located MIMO radars using waveform optimisation in signal dependent clutter

In this study, two iterative design algorithms for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars with co-located antennas with point targets are proposed. In these algorithms, by joint design of the receiver filter and transmit waveform using linear combination of orthogonal waveforms, the authors aim to maximise the signal-to-interference plus-noise ratio (SINR) in the presence of signal dependent interference. In the first proposed algorithm, in each iteration, transmit waveforms and receive filter are designed in closed form to decrease the computational complexity. In the second method, by adding constant envelope criteria, the final waveform would be a linear combination of orthogonal waveforms and because of using a constant envelope, combining coefficients have equal magnitudes and different phases. Therefore, it is more practical for hardware implementation in comparison to the first proposed method. Simulation results show that both proposed methods have better SINR performances compared with other methods proposed in MIMO radar literature. The outperformance of the second proposed method with respect to phased arrays shows that by only using phase shifted combination of orthogonal waveforms, better performance in comparison to phased array radars can be achieved.

Waveform covariance matrix design using Fourier series coefficients

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars may outperform other radar systems such as phased array radars, in terms of higher resolution, better detection probability in the presence of interferences, better parameter identifiability and more flexibility in beampattern design. Waveform covariance matrix design, because of its role in the beampattern synthesis process, is one of the most important problems in MIMO radar systems. In this study, the authors have proposed a closed-form solution based on Fourier series coefficients to design a covariance matrix. The resulting covariance matrix fulfils the practical constraints, i.e. positive semi-definiteness and the uniform elemental power constraint. It also provides performance similar to that of iterative methods, while requires lower computation time and provides better mean square error with respect to other existing closed-form methods. Eigenvalue decomposition is also utilised to convert the possible resulted pseudo-covariance matrices (pseudo-CM), which are not guaranteed to be positive semidefinite, into a covariance matrix. Simulation results show the performance of the proposed method.

Distributed MIMO radar target altitude estimation for ground-based systems

This study presents novel target altitude estimation schemes optimised for ground-based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars with widely separated antennae, where the antennae are located in a plane so that the altitudes of the antennae are close together. For the ground-based systems, existing target localisation methods based on linear least squares such as least square (LS) and bistatic range measurement (BRM) suffer from performance degradation in target altitude estimation and eventually fail in altitude localisation for a perfect ground-based system where the altitude of antennae are the same. The authors propose three target altitude estimation schemes based on linear least squares for the ground-based systems resolving the drawback of existing algorithms for the ground-based systems;extended BRM approach, which estimates the square of target altitude from the auxiliary parameters produced by BRM algorithm, ellipsoid fitting approach, which directly estimates the square of target altitude with other target position information, and extended ellipsoid fitting approach, which utilise the estimation results of ellipsoid fitting approach to improve the target altitude estimation performance. Performance improvement of the proposed algorithms is analysed in terms of mean squared error and simulation results verify the performance.

Chaotic Phase-Coded Waveforms With Space-Time Complementary Coding for MIMO Radar Applications

A framework for designing orthogonal chaotic phase-coded waveforms with space-time complementary coding is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar applications. The phase-coded waveform set to be transmitted is generated with an arbitrary family size and an arbitrary code length by using chaotic sequences. Due to the properties of chaos, this chaotic waveform set has many advantages in performance, such as anti-interference and low probability of intercept. However, it cannot be directly exploited due to the high range sidelobes, mutual interferences, and Doppler intolerance. In order to widely implement it in practice, we optimize the chaotic phase-coded waveform set from two aspects. First, the autocorrelation property of the waveform is improved by transmitting complementary chaotic phase-coded waveforms, and an adaptive clonal selection algorithm is utilized to optimize a pair of complementary chaotic phase-coded pulses. Second, the crosscorrelation among different waveforms is eliminated by implementing space-time coding into the complementary pulses. Moreover, to enhance the detection ability for moving targets in MIMO radars, a method of weighting different pulses by a null space vector is utilized at the receiver to compensate the interpulse Doppler phase shift and accumulate different pulses coherently. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed method.

Chebyshev chaotic polynomials for MIMO radar waveform generation

In this study, the use of a family of Chebyshev chaotic maps for pulse compression in multiple input-multiple output (MIMO) radars is studied. It is shown that, these one-dimensional chaotic maps, which are amongst the simplest chaotic systems, can produce arbitrary number of sequences with arbitrary length, low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), high merit factor (MF) or equivalently low integrated side-lobe ratio (ISLR), very low peak side-lobe ratio and low cross-correlation levels. The complexity of algorithm for generating sequences in this method is linear. Besides, because of the flat spectrum of the generated sequences, high spectral efficiency can be achieved utilising these sequences. Moreover, simplicity of the map results in cheap building blocks of MIMO radars. Additionally, a simple method to improve the autocorrelation side-lobe is given. By lowering the autocorrelation side-lobes, ISLR or equivalently MF is enhanced. Nevertheless, in comparison with welldesigned unimodular sequences, the produced sequences show higher PAPRs. By utilising a PAPR reduction mechanism, this shortcoming is alleviated.

DFT-Based Closed-Form Covariance Matrix and Direct Waveforms Design for MIMO Radar to Achieve Desired Beampatterns

In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, for desired transmit beampatterns, appropriate correlated waveforms are designed. To design such waveforms, conventional MIMO radar methods use two steps. In the first step, the waveforms covariance matrix R is synthesized to achieve the desired beampattern. Whereas in the second step, to realize the synthesized covariance matrix, actual waveforms are designed. Most of the existing methods use iterative algorithms to solve these constrained optimization problems. The computational complexity of these algorithms is very high, which makes them difficult to use in practice. In this paper, to achieve the desired beampattern, a low complexity discrete-Fourier-transform based closed-form covariance matrix design technique is introduced for an MIMO radar. The designed covariance matrix is then exploited to derive a novel closed-form algorithm to directly design the finite-alphabet constant-envelope waveforms for the desired beampattern. The proposed technique can be used to design waveforms for large antenna array to change the beampattern in real time. It is also shown that the number of transmitted symbols from each antenna depends on the beampattern and is less than the total number of transmit antenna elements.

Robust smoothed l₀-norm based approach for MIMO radar target estimation

To enable the smoothed l(0)-norm (SL0) algorithm to offer accurate estimates of the target parameters in three dimensions of range, angle, and Doppler, the fine discretisation of the potential target space is required for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars, which results in the ill-conditioned sensing matrix. Unfortunately, the SL0 algorithm will provide unacceptable results since the large errors occur in computing initial value and performing projection onto the feasible set through the use of the pseudo-inverse of the ill-conditioned sensing matrix. In this study, the authors present a robust SL0 approach for MIMO radars to provide accurate angle-range-Doppler estimates. The appropriate permutation matrix, which takes the place of the pseudo-inverse of the sensing matrix in implementing SL0 algorithm, can be pre-computed by taking advantage of the bi-conjugate gradient stabilised approach and the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the sensing matrix. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm not only has lower computational cost, but provides better performance in estimation of range-angle-Doppler parameters, compared with the regularised iterative reweighted minimisation approach, SL0 algorithm and its modified versions in combination with Tikhonov and truncated SVD methods.

In multiple-input multiple-output radar systems, it is usually desirable to steer transmitted power in the region-of-interest. To do this, conventional methods optimize the waveform covariance matrix,R, for the desired beampattern, which is then used to generate actual transmitted waveforms. In this paper, we provide a low complexity closed-form solution to design covariance matrix for the given planar beampattern using the planar array, which is then used to derive a novel closedform algorithm to directly design the finite-alphabet constantenvelope waveforms. The proposed algorithm exploits the two-dimensional fast-Fourier-transform. The performance of our proposed algorithm is compared with the existing methods that are based on semi-definite quadratic programming with the advantage of a considerably reduced complexity. © 2015 IEEE.
