In this paper multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing is investigated for fibre optic sensor applications. A (2 x 2) MIMO implementation is realized by using lower-order and higher-order mode groups of a graded-index (GI) multi-mode fibre (MMF) as separate transmission channels. A micro-bending pressure sensor changes these separate transmission characteristics and introduces additional crosstalk. By observing the weight-factors of the MIMO system the amount of load applied was determined. Experiments verified a good correlation between the change of the MIMO weight coefficients and the load applied to the sensor and thus verified that MIMO signal processing can beneficially be used for fibre optic sensor applications.

Existing bit loading and transmit power allocation techniques are often optimized for maintaining both a fixed transmit power and a fixed target bit-error rate while attempting to maximize the overall data-rate. However, delay-critical real-time interactive applications, such as voice or video transmission, may require a fixed data rate. For these fixed-rate applications it is desirable to design algorithms, which minimize the bit-error rate (BER) at a given fixed data rate. Since the capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems increases linearly with the minimum number of antennas at both, the transmitter as well as the receiver side, MIMO schemes have attracted a lot of attention. However, non-frequency selective MIMO links have reached a state of maturity. By contrast, frequency selective MIMO links require substantial further research, leading in this contribution to a joint optimization of the number of activated MIMO layers and the number of bits per symbol along with the appropriate allocation of the transmit power under the constraint of a given fixed data throughput. Our results show that in order to achieve the best possible bit-error rate, not necessarily all MIMO layers have to be activated.

In this paper, we investigate the benefits of uniform circular arrays (UCAs) as an alternative antenna deployment to uniform linear arrays (ULA), which are commonly applied for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We consider a MIMO satellite link with focus on the Line-of-Sight (LOS) signal component of the MIMO channel between two geostationary satellites and a mobile earth terminal equipped with several antennae. The MIMO LOS channel is optimized with respect to the maximum achievable spectral efficiency. The aim of our approach is to keep this optimum spectral efficiency nearly constantly even if the terminal on earth is moving. We provide an analytical derivation for the optimum UCA arrangement and prove our results by numerical simulations. Especially for mobile applications, the UCA antenna arrangement seems to be a reasonable candidate in order to guarantee high capacity performance durably. To this end, we present a very simple triangle shaped antenna arrangement which is compact enough to allow vehicle roof top installations for S-band applications.

Mutual coupling between elements in compact transmit antenna arrays is taken into account in performance prediction and system design of multiple-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. The transmitter-end coupling matrix comprised of array impedance matrix and effective load impedance matrix is derived. The impact of transmitter-end mutual coupling on spatial correlation, radiated power, and system capacity is studied. It is shown that for MIMO systems with compact transmit antenna arrays, transmitter-end mutual coupling seriously degrades system capacity. To mitigate the capacity degradation, a simple transmitter-end coupling cancelation method is proposed. It is shown through numerical experiments that the proposed method can significantly improve system capacity in the case that transmit antennas are placed closely.

Little consideration has so far been dedicated to the investigation of the implementation complexity of stochastic detectors for multi-antenna (MIMO) systems although they promise communications performance close to max-log detection for certain SNR regimes. In this work, we propose a complete redesign of the only reported parallel VLSI architecture for soft-input soft-output Markov chain Monte Carlo based MIMO detection to date. Using multiplier-free Gibbs Sampler implementations, dynamic scaling of the noise density and multiple further architectural optimizations, we significantly reduce the area and improve the timing, yielding AT-efficiency improvements of as much as 3.6 times.

The singular value decomposition (SVD) is a popular technique used in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to remove inter-antennas interferences in order to achieve the best performance. As a result, the MIMO channel is decomposed into a number of independent singular-input singular-output (SISO) channels with different weightings. In order to improve the performance, bit-and power-allocation strategies are required due to the unequal weighting coefficients. In contrast, the geometric mean decomposition (GMD) decomposes the MIMO channel into a number of equally weighted SISO channels with remaining inter-antenna interference which can be removed by using dirty paper precoding at the transmit side. Having equally weighted layers, the computational complexity required to implement bit-and power-allocation strategies decreases and GMD-based MIMO systems seem to be an appropriate solution. This paper analyses and compares the performance of SVD- and GMD-based MIMO systems affected by antennas correlation where QAM constellations are transmitted along the transmit antennas, demonstrating that the GMD-based one is more robust against antennas correlation. Furthermore, optimal and suboptimal bit-and power-allocation strategies are compared. This investigation demonstrates that the suboptimal solution provides a performance close to that offered by the optimal one but with a reduced computational cost.

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can provide a noticeable improvement in channel performance. Nevertheless some perturbances affect the capability of this technique to get the expected improvement. Due to the use of multiple antennas at the same front-end and their close spacing the so called antennas correlation effect appears. Antennas correlation can drastically affect the channel behaviour by increasing the bit-error rate (BER) and dropping its capability. This paper analyses the impact of transmitter- side antennas correlation on the MIMO system performance. The singular value decomposition (SVD) is used to transform the MIMO channel into independent layers. Afterwards bit and power allocation techniques are applied in order to obtain the best performance.

Spatial modulation (SM) is a simple multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication technique in which a single transmit antenna is active for each symbol period. Quadrature spatial modulation (QSM), on the other hand, is a form of SM in which independent transmit antenna selection is made for the real and imaginary parts of the symbols. In these techniques, the spectral efficiency (SE) can be increased logarithmically by increasing the number of antennas used on the transmitterside. Besides, in classical SM and QSM schemes, the number of antennas must be the power of two. In this paper, a flexible QSM scheme is proposed, which eliminates the necessity of antenna number and increases SE value linearly with the number of antennas for RF systems. This scheme, called hardware aware quadrature spatial modulation (HAQSM), uses optimized constellations for the desired SE value. Optimal constellations are obtained using convex optimization under a constraint aimed at keeping the distance between neighboring symbols above the desired value. The bit error rate (BER) performances of the HAQSM scheme were obtained by Monte Carlo simulations and compared with the existing schemes in the literature.

Within the last years multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission has reached a lot of attention in the optical fibre community. Theoretically, the concept of MIMO is well understood. However, practical implementations of optical components for mode combining, mode maintenance and mode splitting are in the focus of interest for further computer simulations. That's why in this contribution the specific impulse responses of the (2 x 2) MIMO channel, including a 1.4 km and 1.9 km multi-mode fibre respectively and optical couplers at both ends, are measured for operating wavelengths of 1326 nm and 1576 nm. Since pulsed semiconductor diode lasers, capable of working at different wavelengths, are used for the characterization of the underlying optical MIMO channel, inverse filtering is needed for obtaining the respective impulse responses. However, the process of inverse filtering also known as signal deconvolution is critical in noisy environments. That's why different approaches such as Wiener and parametric filtering are studied with respect to different optimization criteria. Using these obtained impulse responses a baseband MIMO data transmission is modelled. In order to create orthogonal channels enabling a successful transmission, a MIMO zero forcing (ZF) equaliser is implemented and analysed. Our main results given as an open eye-diagram and calculated bit-error rates show the successful implementation of the MIMO transmission system. Finally, for practical investigations regarding mode combining, mode maintenance and mode splitting a (2 x 2) MIMO testbed using fusion couplers and a multi-mode fibre (MMF) length of 1.9 km is set up for an operating wavelength of 1326 nm. Together with the MIMO receiver-side signal processing the successful transmission of parallel data streams is presented.
