This work aims at designing a low-complexity precoding technique in the downlink of a large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in which the base station (BS) is equipped with M antennas to serve K single-antenna user equipments. This is motivated by the high computational complexity required by the widely used zero-forcing or regularized zero-forcing precoding techniques, especially when K grows large. To reduce the computational burden, we adopt a precoding technique based on truncated polynomial expansion (TPE) and make use of the asymptotic analysis to compute the deterministic equivalents of its corresponding signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) and transmit power. The asymptotic analysis is conducted in the regime in which M and K tend to infinity with the same pace under the assumption that imperfect channel state information is available at the BS. The results are then used to compute the TPE weights that minimize the asymptotic transmit power while meeting a set of target SINR constraints. Numerical simulations are used to validate the theoretical analysis.

This paper proposes a method for applying the idea of Interference Alignment (IA) in femtocell networks. In order to manage the uplink interference caused by macrocell users at the femtocell base stations (FBS), cooperation between macrocell users with the closest femtocell base stations could be used to align the received signals of macrocell users in the same subspace at multiple FBS simultaneously. We develop a method to apply IA while providing the QoS requirements of macrocell users, in terms of minimum received SINR at the macrocell base station (MBS). With this approach, the BER performance of femtocell users is shown to improve, while maintaining the quality of the communication channel of macrocell users.

This paper presents a low complexity detection algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The novel subspace approach involves QR Decomposition (QRD) or Cholesky decomposition to triangularize the effective channel matrix so that several (possibly overlapping) groups of data streams can be detected separately. Link layer simulations show that the ergodic MIMO capacity can be closely approached by exploiting an Overlapped Subspace Detection (OSD) strategy. The OSD algorithm offers a scalable performance/complexity trade-off between Zero-Forcing (ZF) and Maximum a posteriori Probability (APP) detection. The proposed algorithm can be straightforwardly applied to large MIMO systems, as prevalent with recent advances in the field such as network MIMO and Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) transmission and reception.

In this work we study a recently proposed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system called the Layered Steered Space-Time Codes (LSSTC) that combines the benefits of vertical Bell Labs space-time (VBLAST) scheme, space-time block codes (STBC) and beamforming. The aim of this research is to investigate the analytical error performance of single user LSSTC. In addition, the tradeoff between several parameters of LSSTC is analyzed.

Removing channel interference in broadband multiple-input multiple-output ( MIMO) systems is a task which can be solved by applying a spatio-temporal vector coding (STVC) channel description and using singular value decomposition (SVD) in combination with signal pre- and post-processing. In this contribution a polynomial matrix factorization channel description in combination with a specific SVD algorithm for polynomial matrices is analyzed and compared to the commonly used STVC SVD. This comparison points out the analogies and differences of both equalization methods. Furthermore, the bit error rate (BER) performance is evaluated for two different channel types and is optimized by applying bit-allocation schemes involving a power loading strategy. Our results, obtained by computer simulation, show that polynomial matrix factorization such as polynomial matrix SVD could be an alternative signal processing approach compared to conventional SVD-based MIMO approaches in frequency-selective MIMO channels.

Tree search is an important kind of detection method. It can be used in multiple-input multiple-output systems detection and the multi-user detection. In this paper, a novel adjustable reduced metric-first sphere decoding (MFSD) algorithm for tree search has been proposed. By setting a suitable and adjustable threshold, the proposed algorithm cuts nodes whose partial Euclidean distances are larger than it. Simulation results show that the algorithm can reduce the complexity of the MFSD and the performance and complexity can be adjusted according QoS.

The diversity gain of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system adopting the Neyman-Pearson (NP) criterion is derived for a signal-present versus signal-absent scalar hypothesis test statistic and for a vector signal-present versus signal-absent hypothesis testing problem. The results are applied to a MIMO radar system with M transmit and N receive antennas, used to detect a target composed of Q random scatterers with possibly non-Gaussian reflection coefficients in the presence of possibly non-Gaussian clutter-plus-noise. It is found that the diversity gain for the MIMO radar system is dependent on the cumulative distribution function (cdf) of the reflection coefficients while invariant to the cdf of the clutter-plus-noise under some reasonable conditions. If the noise-free received waveforms at each receiver span a space of dimension M' <= M, the largest possible diversity gain is controlled by min (N M', Q) and the cdf of the magnitude square of a linear transformed version of the reflection coefficient vector. It is shown that properly chosen nonorthogonal waveforms can achieve the same diversity gain as orthogonal waveforms.

In this contribution a signal theoretic multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system model for estimating modal and chromatic dispersion is developed. Based on channel measurements within a 1,4 km MIMO multimode channel parameters for modal and chromatic dispersion are estimated. Furthermore, taking given parameters of the dispersion into account, the introduced signal theoretic MIMO system model enables a reconstruction of the MIMO specific impulse responses.

This paper proposes a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) identification technique that exploits statistics of space-frequency correlation of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Here, space correlation refers to the correlation across antenna elements and frequency correlation refers to the correlation across subcarriers. In this technique, the mean value and standard deviation of space-frequency correlation over multiple transmit and receive antenna combinations are used to identify NLOS conditions. The technique requires minimal variation of spatial correlation across different multi-path components. The channel model satisfying this requirement is studied and the performance of the proposed technique is investigated.

In this paper, we propose a quantized predictive pre-coding scheme for spatial multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with delayed feedback. A geodesic transmit subspace prediction algorithm is designed to predict the transmit subspace for the forthcoming transmission at the receiver. An infrequently updated codebook for transmit subspace quantization is developed to improve the quantization resolution. Numerical results show that in various time-varying channels with unit step feedback delay the performance of the proposed approach is better than previously proposed memoryless Grassmannian subspace packing scheme, the 1-bit geodesic feedback algorithm, and the Gaussian vector quantization algorithm, under the same or even lower feedback rate.
