Low-complexity signal detection for large-scale MIMO systems with second-order Richardson method

Linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detection achieves near-optimal performance in large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (LS-MIMO) systems but entails high computational complexity due to large matrix inversion operations. In this Letter, a novel computationally efficient algorithm based on second-order Richardson method is proposed to solve the LS-MIMO detection problem. While no a priori information for the first iteration of the second-order Richardson method is available, the conjugate gradient scheme is exploited that greatly reduces the number of iterations to achieve the desired performance. Moreover, the eigenvalue-based acceleration parameters are proposed to further accelerate the convergence rate. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed detector outperforms the existing methods and approaches the performance of MMSE with a small number of iterations.

Multi-class import vector machine for transmit antenna selection in MIMO systems

Antenna selection is a promising solution to reduce the high cost of multiple RF chains in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems while maintaining the benefits of spatial diversity and multiplexing gain. By modelling the problem of transmit antenna selection as a multi-class classification and/or decision-making task, this Letter proposed a multi-class import vector machine (IVM) based approach to maximise the average received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Simulation results prove that IVM outperforms the conventional optimisation driven algorithm and the state-of-the-art learning-based scheme of support vector machine in terms of average received SNR performance with feasible complexity and sparsity.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are being proposed for next generation broadband wireless systems. However, as the complexity of implementation grows with the number of antenna elements, their feasibility is a challenging task. Consider very low complexity, 1-bit digital-to-analogue converters (DACs) for the downlink of massive MIMO systems. The impact of the resultant severe non-linear distortion effects is analysed when a low-complexity maximum ratio transmission technique is employed for user separation. The non-linear distortion levels decrease with the number of transmit antennas allowing good performance, even with 1-bit DACs are shown.

multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques are now being commonplace in wireless communication systems as they provide diversity and spatial multiplexing gains compared to single-input single-output (SISO) systems. Due to the induced high complexity of maximum likelihood (ML) detection for MIMO systems, suboptimal detection is usually employed but at a performance loss. This loss has been fully characterized for linear receivers, namely, zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) detectors. Interestingly, it has been noticed that in case of coding across transmit antennas, the MMSE receiver showed significant improvement over ZF in terms of outage probability at low spectral efficiencies, whereas for high spectral efficiencies, both receivers showed similar behaviour. We fill the gap between the two extreme cases (i.e., ML and linear receivers) through relaxing the linearity constraint by considering group receivers (viz. group zero-forcing (GZF) and group minimum mean square error (GMMSE) detectors) with coding across transmit antennas. We first derive the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) for those group detectors. Next, we characterize the peculiar rate-dependent outage behaviour of the GMMSE, where it is found that tolerating additional detection complexity provides performance advantage w.r.t the MMSE at specific ranges of spectral efficiency. We corroborate our theoretical analysis via numerical simulations.

This paper considers transceiver design problem for downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We examine minimization of sum mean-square-error (MSE) constrained with each base station (BS) antenna power problem. The problem is examined for the practically relevant scenario where the noise vector of each mobile station (MS) is a zero-mean circularly symmetric complex Gaussian random variable with arbitrary covariance matrix. We propose a novel downlink-uplink duality based iterative solution to solve the problem. The problem is solved as follows. First, we establish novel sum MSE downlink-uplink duality. Our duality is established by formulating the noise covariance matrix of the uplink channel as a fixed point function. Second, we formulate the power allocation part of each problem in the downlink channel as a Geometric Program (GP). Third, using the duality result and the solution of GP, we utilize alternating optimization technique to solve the original downlink problem. In our simulation results, we have observed that the proposed duality based solution utilizes less power than that of existing algorithm.

The use of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been a central part of cellular systems for achieving higher capacity. Distributed antenna system (DAS) is a MIMO system with geographically distributed antennas that provide high coverage and capacity due to the spatial macro diversity. In a multi-user scenario, DAS provides better spatial separation among users. An optimal transmission strategy in a multiuser multi-cell DAS is unknown. We analyze and evaluate downlink capacity of three multiplexing strategies: orthogonal transmission, joint precoding, and space division multiplexing (SDM). Based on the evaluation we propose the most appropriate strategy. The sum-rate has been measured in different scenarios. Simulation results show that DAS has superior performance compared to co-located antennas systems (CAS). It is particularly shown that DAS with simple SDM can provide better capacity than joint transmission in addition to reduced complexity and less feedback overhead. This happens when the number of users increases and remote radio units have single antenna.

Precoding is an effective method to improve the transmission quality in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In a real-world system, the precoder is selected from a codebook, and its index is fed back to the transmitter. For a maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver, the criterion for precoder selection is equivalent to maximizing the minimum distance of the received signal constellation. T he derivation of the optimum solution, however, may be of high computational complexity due to the requirement of the exhaustive search. To reduce the computational complexity, a suboptimum solution based on singular value decomposition (SVD) has been proposed in literature. In this paper, we propose using a QR decomposition (QRD) based method for precoder selection. To further improve the system performance, we also propose an enhanced QRD-based selection method. With Givens rotations, the computational complexity of the enhanced QRD-based method can be effectively reduced. Finally, we combine precoding with receive antenna selection, and use the proposed QRD-based methods to solve this joint optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed approaches can significantly improve the system performance.

Orthogonal Frequency Division multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular modulation technique that provides high data rates and good robustness against frequency selective fading. Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) is an efficient way to introduce space-time diversity in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Using non-linear modulations such as Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM) with its constant envelope and continuous phase properties could be a solution to construct MIMO OFDM systems and to avoid the structural limitations of linear codes and alleviate the typical PAPR issue of OFDM. However, a major issue with CPM based systems may remain: the decoding complexity. In this paper, we introduce a new space-time-frequency diversity technique based on L2-orthogonal multi-h CPM Space-Time codes designed for OFDM transmission. We benchmark these codes under Rayleigh frequency selective channels and show how they achieve full spatial diversity at full rate for any number of antennas, good spectral compactness and also robustness to frequency fading. Furthermore, the decoding complexity is highly reduced and even made linear in the number of antennas thanks to the orthogonality properties.

Sphere decoding (SD) is a promising means for implementing high-performance data detection in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. In this paper, we focus on the register transfer level implementation of SD with minimum area-delay product for application in wideband MIMO communication systems, such as IEEE 802.11n, where multiple SD cores need to be instantiated. The basic architectural considerations and the proposed optimizations are explained based on hard-output SD, but are also applicable to soft-output SD. Corresponding VLSI implementation results (for both hard-output and soft-output SD) show an improvement in the area-delay product by almost 50% compared to that of other SD implementations reported in the literature.

A multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel equalization scheme for time-varying wireless channels is proposed. The proposed equalization technique uses set-membership affine projection (SM-AP) algorithm for updating filter weights of a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated through simulations using wireless channel models recommended by International Telecommunication Union for Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R). The results show that the proposed scheme achieves a fast convergence speed. The convergence performance of this scheme has also been studied for different projection order and compared with the convergence performance of set-membership normalized least mean-square (SM-NLMS) algorithm based MIMO-DFE. The proposed equalizer has low complexity and works well even in frequency-selective channels.
