Low-Overhead Feedback Topology Design for the K-User MIMO Interference Alignment

Since designing a feedback topology is a practical way to implement interference alignment at reduced cost of channel state information (CSI) feedback, six feedback topologies have been presented in prior works for a K-user multiple-input multiple-output interference channel To fully reveal the potential benefits of the feedback topology in terms of the saving of CSI overhead, we propose a new feedback topology in this paper. By efficiently performing dimensionality-decreasing at the transmitter side and aligning interference signals at a subset of receivers, we show that the proposed feedback topology obtains substantial reduction of feedback cost over the existing six feedback designs under the same antenna configuration.

On the signal combinations for a uniquely decodable coded MIMO-FSO communication system

Our previous works have clarified that exploiting uniquely decodable codes (UDC) can enhance the throughput of M -to -1 free space optical (FSO) systems due to the non -orthogonal property. Considering that multiple -input multiple -output (MIMO) technique can combat fading, this paper expands the original single -receiver case to the case of multiple receivers and establishes a UDC-MIMO-FSO system, aiming at combining the channel capacity gain of UDC with the diversity gain of MIMO. However, owing to the employed UDC codewords, it is discovered that the traditional maximal ratio combining (MRC) becomes no longer optimal. Two combination approaches are proposed in order to obtain better error performance, i.e. the suboptimal maximizing minimum distance combination (MMDC) and the optimal distance -based candidate selection (DBCS), which are verified to outperform traditional benchmarks by simulations. The complexities of the two proposed algorithms are also compared. In addition, we build a 2 x 2 equivalent experiment to further validate the feasibility of the UDC-MIMO-FSO architecture and the effectiveness of the proposed combination algorithms.

multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems have effectively addressed today's high demand for 5G communications and beyond. Further, MIMO-assisted space-time block codes (STBCs) have been shown to enhance the system's performance and provide a complete variety of coherent flat-fading channels. Additionally, the closed-form expression of the probability density function of the summation of correlated Weibull random variables remains unknown. In this work, we investigate the performance analysis of MIMO-STBC-enabled systems subject to the Weibull fading channel. New tight approximate expressions for numerous system performance metrics, e.g., outage probability, average capacity under various rate adaption methods, and average symbol/bit error rate, have been obtained. The Monte Carlo simulation method has corroborated all the presented results.

Design of a Transparent Antenna Implanted on Polycrystalline Silicon Solar Cells for SWB

In this paper, a super-wideband (SWB) MIMO transparent antenna (TA) integrated with polycrystalline silicon solar cell (PSSC) panels is designed. Silver paste is printed on the high-transparency borosilicate glass surface, and the radiation patches are designed with metal mesh (MM) structure to achieve high transparency. The antenna has a bandwidth of 1.7-31GHz (18.2:1) and achieves a gain from varied 3.3-12dBi. The channel capacity loss (CCL) is below 0.4 bits/s/Hz, and the total reflection coefficient (TARC) is below -10dB. The mutual coupling between antenna elements is below -20dB. A high transparency of 79% is achieved, with minimal impact on the efficiency of the solar cell panels. Integration with PSSC allows for broad applications in various household and vehicular communication systems.

With the advancement made in low power BSN (Body Sensor Network) technology, wearable and portable biomedical devices are fast emerging as the next generation healthcare monitoring and/or medical diagnostic tools. For effective real time healthcare monitoring and/or telemedicine applications, the wearable or portable devices have to be equipped with transceiver electronics to facilitate data transfer between the medical devices and the user (e.g. doctors). One crucial design of such electronics is to have a robust and small communications system. It is well known that antenna array communication systems are capable of providing a high capacity in a mobile environment. However, the use of such systems for the biomedical applications described above leads to mutual coupling effect. This paper investigates the mutual coupling effect and its effect on system capacity. An expression to describe the effect of mutual coupling for channel capacity in wideband antenna array system is derived. Simulation result shows the impact of coupling effect on channel capacity in the wideband antenna array system.

Spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) are both essential in future wireless communications. To improve the system performance on these two metrics, in this paper we consider the weighted sum rate maximization (WSRMax) problem subject to per-cell EE constraints and per-BS transmit power constraints in multicell multiuser downlink systems. This problem is difficult in its original form due to the introduction of new EE constraints. We first reveal that the original problem can be transformed into an equivalent parameterized polynomial form by introducing some auxiliary variables. By exploiting the concavity property with respect to each variable in the equivalent problem, an efficient block coordinate ascent algorithm is then proposed with guaranteed convergence property. Numerical results show that compared with the conventional WSRMax algorithm, in addition to fulfilling the EE requirement of each cell, our algorithm achieves a better system EE performance at the cost of a slight sum rate performance loss at a certain region and offers a new insight on the SE-EE tradeoff in wireless communication systems.

In this paper, we consider a multi-input-multi-output cognitive radio (MIMO-CR) system which consists of one secondary user (SU) and one secondary destination (SD), in which one eavesdropper (E) attempts to tap the information from SU to SD. All of the aforementioned nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. For enhancing physical layer security, we propose so-called optimal antenna selection (OAS) and suboptimal antenna selection (SAS) schemes, which assume that the instantaneous wiretap channel information is known and unknown, respectively. We carry out the secrecy outage probability analysis for the proposed OAS and SAS schemes. In order to make a performance comparison, we also discuss the secrecy outage probability of single-input-single-output cognitive radio (SISO-CR) system. The secrecy outage performance of SAS is better than SISO but worse than OAS. Furthermore, as the numbers of antennas of SU and SD increase, the secrecy outage probability of OAS and SAS both have significant improvements.

This paper reports an experimental demonstration of a 16 Gbit/s millimeter-wave communication link using MIMO processing of 2 OAM modes on each of two transmitter/receiver antenna apertures. Two groups of multiplexed OAM beams, each containing OAM beams of l=1 and +3 are generated and transmitted through two transmitter apertures respectively. The two transmitter apertures are separated with a certain distance such that the two groups of OAM beams are spatially overlapping at the receiver aperture plane. Each channel carries 1-GBaud 16-QAM signals at the same carrier frequency of 28GHz. Our experimental results show that MIMO equalization processing can help mitigate the interferences from the other OAM channels and the BER performance of each channel improves significantly after MIMO processing. Our results indicate that OAM multiplexing and traditional spatial multiplexing combined with MIMO processing can be compatible and complementary with each other.

Sparse array can avoid unwanted grating lobes and take full advantage of the wingspan space, which is widely applied in downward-looking 3-D SAR. In the paper, a 3D imaging strategy based on compressive sensing theory is proposed for downward-looking sparse array SAR imaging, which can improve the performance in cross-track direction. T/R sparse array and MIMO sparse array, as the representative distributions of the sparse array, are discussed in the paper. Compared with T/R sparse array, MIMO sparse array can achieve high imaging performance with less real antenna elements. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can provide high quality imagery compared to the conventional method.

In this work, the ability of a physically reconfigurable, linear uniform, MIMO antenna with variable interelement spacing to achieve maximum capacity is demonstrated for a variety of propagation scenarios. Propagation scenarios are differentiated based upon the angle of incidence. An example situation with two transmit and two receive antennas is analyzed. It is shown that the maximum capacity is achieved by appropriately selecting the inter-element spacing for different propagation scenarios. Demonstrating the resilience of this reconfigurable antenna, high throughput communications are allowed to be reliably achieved.
