Fast SL0 algorithm for 3D imaging using bistatic MIMO radar

multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar is attractive in moving targets imaging, which is able to solve the difficulty of complex motion compensation. In this article, a three-dimensional imaging method using bistatic MIMO radar is proposed. Compared with monostatic MIMO radar, the bistatic system can provide the complementary information, and the imaging process is not the same as the monostatic case. Furthermore, considering the image sparsity and the spatial limitation of radar targets, a fast smoothed L0 norm algorithm is proposed to achieve the high resolution in cross-range directions with limited antennas. The experimental results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.

General space-time clutter model for multi-channel airborne radar

Ground clutter of looking-down airborne radar is spread in Doppler because of the platform motion, and thus the interested moving targets may be masked by the ground clutter. In order to enhance the performance of clutter suppression, the clutter characteristics should be analysed in detail. So here, a general clutter model which suits for the conventional-phased array radar, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar, and hybrid MIMO-phased array radar, all with arbitrary array shape, whether in monostatic or bistatic applications, is developed. Clutter characteristics under two typical scenarios are presented by simulation examples, simultaneously;the effectiveness of the general clutter model is demonstrated.

MMSE-based waveform design for the distributed MIMO radar in spectrally crowded environments

This study investigates the waveform design problem for a distributed multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar operating in spectrally crowded environments. The goal is to synthesise waveforms to minimise the target estimation error and improve the spectral coexistence with other radio frequency systems (e.g. communication systems). To this end, a waveform design problem based on minimising the mean square error (MSE) of target estimation has been formulated under the energy and spectral constraints. An algorithm to synthesise the optimal spectrally constrained waveforms with the minimum MSE has been proposed. It has been shown that the synthesised waveforms have superior estimation performance (in terms of MSE) and ensure significantly enhanced spectral compatibility.

Space-time adaptive processing algorithm for airborne MIMO radar with nonside-looking array using temporally correlated multiple sparse Bayesian learning

The near-range clutter of airborne nonside-looking array greatly depends on range. Conventional phased-array space-time adaptive processing (STAP) radar suffers severe performance degradation in the presence of a near-range clutter scenario. To efficiently suppress no-stationary clutter with only one snapshot, an STAP algorithm for airborne multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar with nonside-looking array based on sparse representation is first presented, which is referred to as MIMOSR-STAP in this paper. By exploiting the waveform diversity of MIMO radar, each snapshot of a tested range-cell is transformed into the multisnapshots of phased array radar, which are used to estimate the high-resolution space-time spectrum with multiple measurement vectors technique. The proposed approach is effective in estimating the spectrum by utilizing temporally correlated multiple sparse Bayesian learning. In the sequel, the clutter covariance matrix and corresponding adaptive weight vector are efficiently obtained. MIMOSR-STAP enjoys high accuracy and robustness so that it achieves better performance of output signal-to-clutter-plus-noise-ratio and minimum detectable velocity than the single measurement vector sparse representation methods in the literature. Thus, MIMOSR-STAP performs well in a serious nonstationary clutter scenario and is suitable for an insufficient independent and identically distributed samples environment. Super-resolution 3D imaging in MIMO radar using spectrum estimation theory

A super-resolution three-dimensional (3D) imaging method using spectrum estimation theory and narrowband multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar is presented. First, the 3D echo signal model is built in a narrowband bistatic MIMO radar with uniform linear transmit array and uniform rectangular receive array. Then, the high accuracy position estimation of target's scattering centres is obtained via spectrum estimation theory only with single snapshot, and the scatter intensity estimation is obtained by least-square estimation. The 3D image of the target is thus reconstructed. The proposed method is especially suitable for high-speed manoeuvring targets with complex motion. Finally, comparative simulation results are presented and the performances under noise and error case are analysed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

It is known that there is a contradiction between high-resolution range estimation and velocity estimation due to the influence of pulse repetition frequency (PRF) in traditional phased-array (PA) radar. In this paper, a joint unambiguous angle, range and velocity estimation method is proposed for bistatic multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar with frequency diverse array (FDA). Owing to the FDA, there is a little frequency increment between the arrays and the transmit steering matrix carries angle, range even velocity information. Consider the range-angle coupling in transmit steering matrix, a subarray-based transmitted waveform and decoupling approach are designed. Utilizing the ESPRIT algorithm and ambiguity resolve methods based on FDA, the direction-of-departure (DOD), direction-of-arrival (DOA), range and velocity parameters are estimated unambiguously. Additionally, Cramer-Rao bounds (CRB) for these parameters are derived and the performance of this radar is analyzed. Simulation results indicates the validity of the proposed method.

Monostatic radar range-Doppler sidelobe suppression using nearly orthogonal waveforms

Sidelobes of radar waveforms can cause many undesirable consequences. Inspirited by achievements in multiple-input-multiple-output radar, the authors study how to use and design a set of nearly orthogonal waveforms for monostatic radar with coherent accumulation operation to transmit at successive pulse repetition intervals (PRIs). As the range sidelobes at different PRIs cannot be coherently accumulated anymore during the coherent accumulation, the overall sidelobe level after coherent accumulation can be decreased significantly, which is verified by numerical results.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing linear frequency modulation signal design with optimised pulse compression property of spatial synthesised signals

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform is widely studied due to its application potentials in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar, but its effective design is still a challenge. Considering the critical role, the pulse compression property of spatial synthesised signals plays in MIMO radar, a detailed analysis is made using OFDM LFM signals, resulting in the radical reasons for the high grating sidelobes. Then, a joint optimisation method for OFDM LFM signal design based on genetic algorithm and sequential quadratic programming is proposed to degrade the sidelobe level dramatically. Furthermore, to nullify the grating sidelobes thoroughly, a modification is performed through optimising the relaxed frequency steps of the OFDM LFM waveform, which involves a balance between sidelobe property and orthogonality. Numerical results validate the theoretic analysis and show the superior performance of the designed OFDM LFM waveforms in pulse compression properties of spatial synthesised signals.

In recent years, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar has been receiving increasing attention from researchers due to its numerous benefits. In contrast to conventional radar systems, it offers increased spatial resolution and improved parameter estimation, target tracking, and recognition performance. Recently, a combination of phased-array radar and MIMO radar, which is called Phased-MIMO radar, has also been proposed and studied. The ambiguity function has been a traditional and effective tool to investigate the range and Doppler resolution of conventional radar systems and is now being extended for MIMO radar systems. In this letter, the ambiguity function of the Phased-MIMO radar with overlapping subarrays has been formulated, and some mathematical properties of the ambiguity function have been derived. These properties can help when comparing the performance of conventional and MIMO radar systems. This letter can be considered an extension of the work done by Chen and Vaidyanathan for MIMO radar systems.
