Modular Family of sensors for a Nanopositioning and Nanomeasuring Machine

This article presents a modular sensor family and her integration into a Nanopositioning and Nanomeasuring Machine (NPM Machine). More and more flexible data acquisition is necessary in high-precision metrology of micro- and nanostructured parts with increasing complexity and 3-D dimensionality of the geometry. Sensing of most various surfaces and structures with nanometer resolution is an important issue. Because of different capabilities of divers optical probes among each other, but also of tactile and atomic force sensors a multiple sensor concept on the basis of a modular family of sensors is proposed. The combination of the several probes is realized by a microscope revolver system. The centerpiece of the metrology system is a Nanopositioning and Nanomeasuring Machine with sub-nanometer resolution in a measuring range of several millimeters.

An Adaptive Sampling Approach for Digitizing Unknown Free-form Surfaces based on Advanced Path Detecting

Reverse engineering technology has been widely recognized as a crucial strategy for innovative design of products. However, currently one of major problems for its application is that huge amounts of digitized points cloud data need to be processed for geometrical surface modelling, especially for unknown free-form surfaces which are widely used in industry fields such as aircraft, automobile, shipbuilding, steam turbine, etc. In order to digitize unknown free-form surfaces accurately and efficiently, an adaptive sampling approach based on advanced path detecting has been presented. The method is characterized by integrating one touch- trigger probe and two laser probes onto the same Z axis of Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), and the two laser probes are located on both sides of the touch probe. During sampling, the CMM scans the free-form surface line by line. At the scanning direction, the laser probes are applied to collect the measuring path information in front of the touch probe. And the data acquired by the laser probes is processed and fitted into B-spline curves real-timely, and then the curvature feature of the measuring path is extracted. The obtained path information is used to generate a new measuring path for touch probe to achieve adaptive sampling. While at the cross-section feeding direction, curvature analysis algorithm based on the angle variation between measuring sections is employed to subdivide the cross-sections when needed. Repeating this procedure, the measuring sections will be distributed adaptively. Simulation and experiment results indicate that the sampling points generated by the touch probe are laid out rationally according to the curvature of the surfaces, therefore the sampling efficiency and accuracy can be improved significantly by the proposed approach.

In this paper, the development of a multiple-sensor coordinate measuring system is introduced and its applications to automated part localization and rapid surface digitization are experimentally demonstrated. The developed multiple-sensor coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is characterized by an integrated use of a high-precision CMM equipped with a motorized touch probe, and a three-dimensional (3-D) active vision system, advanced computational software, and the associated electronics. The 3-D active vision system consists of three components: a charge-coupled device camera, a digital light professing (DLP) projector, and a personal computer with an image processing board. The DLP projector is based on the innovative digital micro-mirror device, which can be controlled by the personal computer to project various structured light patterns. With the flexibility of the DLP projector, the orientation, range, density, and colors of the structured light patterns are programmable and adaptable to different needs. Consequently, the active vision system is capable of digitizing surface coordinates of objects having multiple features. With the coordinate data acquired using the 3-D active vision system, intelligent feature recognition algorithms can be applied to extract the global surface information of the object. The obtained information can be subsequently used to automatically guide the touch probe for rapid coordinate data acquisition and to strategically control the coordinate measuring machine for high precision sampling of critical surface area. In this paper, the information automation for the multiple-sensor integrated system is demonstrated in part localization when computer-aided design models are available, and rapid and high-precision surface digitization in reverse engineering. Automatic camera calibration for a multiple-sensor integrated coordinate measurement system

An automatic camera calibration scheme that utilizes a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and a novel camera calibration algorithm is presented in this paper for a multiple-sensor integrated coordinate measurement system. In the proposed calibration scheme, the touch probe tip carried by the CMM is employed to automatically generate high-precision calibration target points for camera calibration and sensor integration. A novel camera calibration algorithm with analytical formulations is developed to calibrate camera parameters in three stages without nonlinear minimization procedures. Simulations and experiments were performed to verify the proposed camera calibration algorithm. The precision of the automatic camera calibration scheme is also evaluated.
