Information about the surrounding atmosphere at a real timescale significantly relies on available gas sensors to be efficiently combined into multisensor arrays as electronic olfaction units. However, the array's performance is challenged by the ability to provide orthogonal responses from the employed sensors at a reasonable cost. This issue becomes more demanded when the arrays are designed under an on-chip paradigm to meet a number of emerging calls either in the internet-of-things industry or in situ noninvasive diagnostics of human breath, to name a few, for small-sized low-powered detectors. The recent advances in additive manufacturing provide a solid top-down background to develop such chip-based gas-analytical systems under low-cost technology protocols. Here, we employ hydrolytically active heteroligand complexes of metals as ink components for microplotter patterning a multioxide combinatorial library of chemiresistive type at a single chip equipped with multiple electrodes. To primarily test the performance of such a multisensor array, various semiconducting oxides of the p- and n-conductance origins based on pristine and mixed nanocrystalline MnOx, TiO2, ZrO2, CeO2, ZnO, Cr2O3, Co3O4, and SnO2 thin films, of up to 70 nm thick, have been printed over hundred pm areas and their micronanostructure and fabrication conditions are thoroughly assessed. The developed multioxide library is shown to deliver at a range of operating temperatures, up to 400 degrees C, highly sensitive and highly selective vector signals to different, but chemically akin, alcohol vapors (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and n-butanol) as examples at low ppm concentrations when mixed with air. The suggested approach provides us a promising way to achieve cost-effective and well-performed electronic olfaction devices matured from the diverse chemiresistive responses of the printed nanocrystalline oxides.

2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) open up novel opportunities in gas sensing with high sensitivity at room temperature. Herein, 2D Mo2CTx flakes with high aspect ratio are successfully synthesized. The chemiresistive effect in a sub-mu m MXene multilayer for different organic vapors and humidity at 10(1)-10(4) ppm in dry air is studied. Reasonably, the low-noise resistance signal allows the detection of H2O down to 10 ppm. Moreover, humidity suppresses the response of Mo2CTx to organic analytes due to the blocking of adsorption active sites. By measuring the impedance of MXene layers as a function of ac frequency in the 10(-2)-10(6) Hz range, it is shown that operation principle of the sensor is dominated by resistance change rather than capacitance variations. The sensor transfer function allows to conclude that the Mo2CTx chemiresistance is mainly originating from electron transport through interflake potential barriers with heights up to 0.2 eV. Density functional theory calculations, elucidating the Mo2C surface interaction with organic analytes and H2O, explain the experimental data as an energy shift of the density of states under the analyte's adsorption which induces increasing electrical resistance.

Utilization of multisensor Data Fusion for Magnetic Nondestructive Evaluation of Defects in Steel Elements under Various Operation Strategies

Increasing the number of inspection sources creates an opportunity to combine information in order to properly set the operation of the entire system, not only in terms of such factors as reliability, confidence, or accuracy, but inspection time as well. In this paper, a magnetic sensor-array-based nondestructive system was applied to inspect defects inside circular-shaped steel elements. The experiments were carried out for various sensor network strategies, followed by the fusion of multisensor data for each case. In order to combine the measurements, first data registration and then four algorithms based on spatial and transformed representations of sensor signals were applied. In the case of spatial representation, the data were combined using an algorithm operating directly on input signals, allowing pooling of information. To build the transformed representation, a multiresolution analysis based on the Laplacian pyramid was used. Finally, the quality of the obtained results was assessed. The details of algorithms are given and the results are presented and discussed. It is shown that the application of data fusion rules for magnetic multisensor inspection systems can result in the growth of reliability of proper identification and classification of defects in steel elements depending on the utilized configuration of the sensor network.

We report a direct synthesis of tin oxide layers onto Si/SiO2 chip equipped with Pt multiple electrodes to develop new gas-analytical multisensor arrays. The tailored local morphology of the layer makes it possible to differentiate the gas response of each layer segment and to build a gas-selective vector signal recognized by pattern recognition algorithms in frames of conventional multisensor principles. The response of the chip to alcohols is in the ppm range.

We have studied the influence of organic vapors, acetone and ethanol, on the resistance of potassium titanate nanowire nonwoven net (PTN) at room temperature. We find that the PTN resistance is reproducibly reduced under appearance of the vapor molecules that might be explained by the influence of the adsorbed species on the electronic/ionic transport. The selectivity of the sensor could be greatly enhanced in order to recognize the kind of the vapors by processing a response of the PTN segment array formed at the same substrate by multiple co-planar electrodes.

The variation of electrical properties of individual SnO2 wedge-like nanowire along its length was characterized comparatively in a vacuum, low-pressure oxygen environment and in synthetic air mixed with various analytes. For characterization, a vapor-solid grown nanowire was indexed with multiple Pt mesoscopic contacts fabricated by e-beam induced deposition from Pt containing metalorganic precursor. The surface of the selected nanowire segments was functionalized with a catalyst via deposition of Pd nanoparticles. Detailed analysis of the electrical properties of the nanowire shows that the effective diameter of the conducting channel of the nanowire can be substantially modified along its length by the surface functionalization and nanowire width change. These variations of the electrical properties of nanowire segments are sufficient for reliable discrimination of acetone, 2-propanol, CO and hydrogen by this elemental multisensor array. Many developments in the field of multisensor array (MSA) transducers have taken place in the last few years. Advancements in fabrication technology, such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and nanotechnology, have made implementation of MSA devices a reality. NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) has been developing this type of technology because of the increases in safety, reliability, and performance and the reduction in operational and maintenance costs that can be achieved with these devices. To demonstrate the MSA technology benefits, KSC quantified the relationship between the number of sensors (N) and the associated improvement in sensor life and reliability. A software algorithm was developed to monitor and assess the health of each element and the overall MSA. Furthermore, the software algorithm implemented criteria on how these elements would contribute to the MSA-calculated output to ensure required performance. The hypothesis was that a greater number of statistically independent sensor elements would provide a measurable increase in measurement reliability. A computer simulation was created to answer this question. An array of N sensors underwent random failures in the simulation and a life extension factor (LEF equals the percentage of the life of a single sensor) was calculated by the program. When LEF was plotted as a function of N, a quasiexponential behavior was detected with marginal improvement above N = 30. The hypothesis and follow-on simulation results were then corroborated experimentally. An array composed of eight independent pressure sensors was fabricated. To accelerate sensor life cycle and failure and to simulate degradation over time, the MSA was exposed to an environmental temperature of 125 degrees C. Every 24 hours, the experiment's environmental temperature was returned to ambient temperature (27 degrees C), and the outputs of all the MSA sensor elements were measured. This paper presents a novel feature extraction scheme taking advantage of both the nonlinear modulation speech model and the spatial diversity of speech and noise signals in a multisensor environment. Herein, we propose applying robust features to speech signals captured by a multisensor array minimizing a noise energy criterion over multiple frequency bands. We show that we can achieve improved recognition performance by minimizing the Teager-Kaiser energy of the noise-corrupted signals in different frequency bands. These Multiband, multisensor Cepstral (MBSC) features are inspired by similar ones already been applied to single-microphone noisy Speech Recognition tasks with significantly improved results. The recognition results show that the proposed features can perform better than the widely-used MFCC features.

Identification and quantification of individual volatile organic compounds in a binary mixture by SAW multisensor array and pattern recognition analysis

We have developed a surface acoustic wave (SAW) multisensor array with five acoustic sensing elements configured as two-port resonator 433.92 MHz oscillators and a reference SAW element to recognize different individual components and determine their concentrations in a binary mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as methanol and acetone, in the ranges 15-130 and 50-250 ppm, respectively. The SAW sensors have been specifically coated by various sensing thin films such as arachidic acid, carbowax, behenic acid, triethanolamine or acrylated polysiloxane, operating at room temperature. By using the relative frequency change as the output signal of the SAW multisensor array with an artificial neural network (ANN), a recognition system has been realized for the identification and quantification of tested VOCs. The features of the SAW multisensor array exposed to a binary component organic mixture of methanol and acetone have been extracted from the output signals of five SAW sensors by pattern recognition (PARC) techniques, such as principal component analysis (PCA). An organic vapour pattern classifier has been implemented by using a multilayer neural network with a backpropagation learning algorithm. The normalized responses of a reduced set of SAW sensors or selected principal components scores have been used as inputs for a feed-forward multilayer perceptron (MLP), resulting in a 70% correct recognition rate with the normalized responses of the four SAW sensors and in an enhanced 80% correct recognition rate with the first two principal components of the original data consisting of the normalized responses of the four SAW sensors.
