We determine the rate region of the vector Gaussian one-helper source-coding problem under a covariance matrix distortion constraint. The rate region is achieved by a simple scheme that separates the lossy vector quantization from the lossless spatial compression. The converse is established by extending and combining three analysis techniques that have been employed in the past to obtain partial results for the problem.

We determine the rate region of the quadratic Gaussian two-encoder source-coding problem. This rate region is achieved by a simple architecture that separates the analog and digital aspects of the compression. Furthermore, this architecture requires higher rates to send a Gaussian source than it does to send any other source with the same covariance. Our techniques can also be used to determine the sum-rate of some generalizations of this classical problem. Our approach involves coupling the problem to a quadratic Gaussian "CEO problem."

We consider the distributed source coding system of L correlated Gaussian sources Y-l, l = 1, 2, . . . , L, which are noisy observations of correlated Gaussian remote sources X-k, k = 1, 2, . . . , K. We assume that Y-L = (t)(Y-1, Y-2 , . . . , Y-L) is an observation of the source vector X-K = (t)(X-1, X-2 , . . . , X-K), having the form Y-L = AX(K) + N-L, where A is a LxK matrix and N-L = (t)(N-1, N-2, . . . , N-L) is a vector of L-independent Gaussian random variables also independent of X-K. In this system, L correlated Gaussian observations are separately compressed by L encoders and sent to the information processing center. We study the remote source coding problem, where the decoder at the center attempts to reconstruct the remote source X-K. We consider three distortion criteria based on the covariance matrix of the estimation error on X-K. For each of those three criteria, we derive explicit inner and outer bounds of the rate distortion region. Next, in the case of K = L and A = I-L, we study the multiterminal source coding problem, where the decoder wishes to reconstruct the observation Y-L = X-L + N-L. To investigate this problem, we shall establish a result that provides a strong connection between the remote source coding problem and multiterminal source coding problem. Using this result, we derive several new partial solutions to the multiterminal source coding problem.

On Lossy source coding With Side Information Under the Erasure Distortion Measure

We consider the Wyner-Ziv and two way source coding problems with the erasure distortion measure. We characterize the rate-distortion regions for these settings, when the source and side information satisfy a positivity condition. Using our results, we show that, contrary to recent conjectures in the literature, feedback from the decoder to the encoder does not reduce the overall rate required in the Wyner-Ziv setting with erasure distortion, when the positivity condition is satisfied. Finally, we extend our techniques to characterize the rate-distortion regions of two multiterminal source coding settings, the Heegard-Berger setting, and the cascade source coding setting, when the positivity condition is satisfied.

Performance evaluation of variable transmission rate OFDM systems via network source coding

Studies related to the network source coding have addressed rate-distortion analysis in both noiseless and noisy channels. However, to the best of authors' knowledge, no prior work has studied network source coding in the context of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In addition, the system performance using network source coding schemes also remains unknown. In this article, we first propose two variable transmission rate (VTR) OFDM systems by utilizing network source coding schemes, and then evaluate the system performance of these two proposed VTR-OFDM systems. For the proposed VTR single-input single-output OFDM system, we employ the concept of a network with intermediate nodes to develop a 3-stage encoder/decoder, and the proposed encoder provides three different coding rates from 0.5 to 0.8. As for the proposed VTR multi-band OFDM system, two correlated sources are simultaneously transmitted using the multiterminal source coding schemes, and two sources are encoded by different coding rates from 0.25 to 0.5. Finally, compared with the traditional uncoded OFDM system, the proposed VTR-OFDM systems have at least 1 to 4 dB gain in signal-to-noise ratio to achieve the same symbol error rate in the additive white Gaussian noise channel.

Zero-Delay and Causal Single-User and Multi-User Lossy source coding with Decoder Side Information

We consider zero-delay, single-user, and multi-user source coding with an average distortion constraint and decoder side information. The zero-delay constraint translates into causal (sequential) encoder and decoder pairs as well as the use of instantaneous codes. For the single-user setting, we show that optimal performance is attained by time sharing at most two scalar encoder-decoder pairs, that use zero-error side information codes. Side information look-ahead is shown to be useless in this setting. Furthermore, we show that even without delay constraints, if either the encoder or decoder are restricted a priori to be scalar, the performance loss cannot be compensated by the other component, which can be scalar as well without further loss. Finally, we show that the multi-terminal source coding problem can be solved in the zero-delay regime and the rate-distortion region is provided.

Duality of a source coding Problem and the Semi-Deterministic Broadcast Channel With Rate-Limited Cooperation

The Wyner-Ahlswede-Korner (WAK) empirical-coordination problem where the encoders cooperate via a finite-capacity one-sided link is considered. The coordination-capacity region is derived by combining several source coding techniques, such as Wyner-Ziv coding, binning, and superposition coding. Furthermore, a semi-deterministic (SD) broadcast channel (BC) with one-sided decoder cooperation is considered. Duality principles relating the two problems are presented, and the capacity region for the SD-BC setting is derived. The direct part follows from an achievable region for a general BC that is tight for the SD scenario. A converse is established by using telescoping identities. The SD-BC is shown to be operationally equivalent to a class of relay-BCs, and the correspondence between their capacity regions is established. The capacity region of the SD-BC is transformed into an equivalent region that is shown to be dual to the admissible region of the WAK problem in the sense that the information measures defining the corner points of both regions coincide. Achievability and converse proofs for the equivalent region are provided. For the converse, we use a probabilistic construction of auxiliary random variables that depends on the distribution induced by the codebook. Several examples illustrate the results.

Distributed source coding for satellite communications

Inspired by mobile satellite communications systems, we consider a source coding system which consists of multiple sources, multiple encoders, and multiple decoders. Each encoder has access to a certain subset of the sources, each decoder has access to certain subset of the encoders, and each decoder reconstructs a certain subset of the sources almost perfectly. The connectivity between the sources and the encoders, the connectivity between the encoders and the decoders, and the reconstruction requirements for the decoders are all arbitrary. Our goal is to characterize the admissible coding rate region. Despite the generality of the problem, we have developed an approach which enables us to study all cases on the same footing. We obtain inner and outer bounds of the admissible coding rate region in terms of Gamma(N)* and <(Gamma)over bar>(N)*, respectively, which are fundamental regions in the entropy space recently defined by Yeung, So far, there has not been a full characterization of Gamma(N)*, so these bounds cannot be evaluated explicitly except for some special cases. Nevertheless, we obtain an alternative outer bound which can be evaluated explicitly. We show that this bound is tight for all the special cases for which the admissible coding rate region is known, The model we study in this paper is more general than all previously reported models on multilevel diversity coding, and the tools we use are new in multiuser,information theory.

We consider multi-terminal source coding with a single encoder and multiple decoders where either the encoder or the decoders can take actions which affect the quality or availability of the side information present at the decoders, subjected to an additional cost constraint on the actions taken. For the scenario where a joint action is taken at the decoders, we characterize the rate-cost trade-off region for lossless source coding, and give an achievability scheme for lossy source coding for two decoders which is optimum for several special cases. For the case where the encoder takes actions, we characterize the rate-cost trade-off for a class of lossless source coding scenarios with multiple decoders.
