Since multiview video communications facilitate the selection of several camera views of a given scene, it may be deemed to be a promising technique for mobile television and camera-phone networks. Similar to conventional single-view video, multiview video also suffers from packet loss events imposed by network congestion. Multiple description coding (MDC) constitutes an attractive candidate solution for mitigating the packet loss events in conventional video communications. Hence it may also be deemed to be an attractive solution for multiview video. In this paper, we propose a novel tree-structured MDC (T-MDC) scheme, which can be readily implemented with the aid of arbitrary video codecs, including multiview codecs. Moreover, the proposed philosophy enables the flexible creation of a variable number of unequal importance descriptions. Finally, we will conceive a joint multiple description coding and multiview video coding (MVC) scheme. We compare two specific tree-structured MDC schemes, namely a so-called height-one complete tree-structured MDC (HOCT-MDC) and a binary tree-structured MDC (BT-MDC) scheme, which we benchmarked against simulcasting aided single description coding in the context of both single and multiview video.

We investigate the coding of multiview images obtained from a set of multiple cameras. To exploit the inter-view correlation, two view-prediction tools have been implemented and used in parallel: a block-based motion compensation scheme and a Depth Image Based Rendering technique (DIBR). Whereas DIBR relies on an accurate depth image, the block-based motion-compensation scheme can be performed without any geometry information. Our encoder adaptively selects the most appropriate prediction scheme using a rate-distortion criterion for an optimal prediction-mode selection. The attractiveness of the algorithm is that the compression algorithm is robust against inaccurately estimated depth images and requires only one single reference camera for fast random-access to different views. We present experimental results for several multiview sequences, that result in a quality improvement of up to 1.4 dB as compared to H.264 compression.

We consider the problem of multiview video compression with recently introduced motion-compensated orthogonal video transforms. It is well known that so called motion-compensated lifted wavelets may substantially deviate from orthonormality due to motion compensation, even if based on an orthogonal or near-orthogonal wavelet. Therefore, inaccurate motion compensation may result in a motion-dependent suboptimal subband decomposition. On the other hand, motion-compensated orthogonal video transforms are designed such that orthonormality is strictly maintained for any motion field. Even inaccurate motion compensation leads to an orthogonal subband decomposition. This is of particular interest for complex motion and disparity fields. For subband coding of multiview video, motion-compensated subbands will be further processed by disparity-compensated subband decompositions. In case of suboptimal subband decompositions, this cascade of processing steps may result in further inefficiencies. On the other hand, motion or disparity compensated orthogonal transforms offer the advantage that the subbands are always orthogonal, even if motion or disparity compensation is inaccurate. This paper investigates the energy compaction of motion and disparity compensated orthogonal transforms.

We consider the joint source-channel coding problem of a 3D video transmitted over an AWGN channel. The goal is to minimize the total number of bits, which is the sum of the number of source bits and the number of forward error correction bits, under two constraints: the quality of the primary view and the quality of the secondary view must be greater than or equal to a predetermined threshold at the receiver. The quality is measured in terms of the expected PSNR of an entire decoded group of pictures. A MVC (multiview coding) encoder is used as the source encoder, and rate compatible punctured turbo codes are utilized for protection of the encoded 3D video over the noisy channel. Equal error protection and unequal error protection are compared for various 3D video sequences and noise levels.

Multiterminal (MT) video coding is a practical application of the MT source coding theory. For MT source coding theory, two problems associated with achievable rate regions are well investigated into in this thesis: a new sufficient condition for BT sum-rate tightness, and the sum-rate loss for quadratic Gaussian MT source coding. Practical code design for ideal Gaussian sources with quadratic distortion measure is also achieved for cases more than two sources with minor rate loss compared to theoretical limits. However, when the theory is applied to practical applications, the performance of MT video coding has been unsatisfactory due to the difficulty to explore the correlation between different camera views. In this dissertation, we present an MT video coding scheme under the H.264/AVC framework. In this scheme, depth camera information can be optionally sent to the decoder separately as another source sequence. With the help of depth information at the decoder end, inter-view correlation can be largely improved and thus so is the compression performance. With the depth information, joint estimation from decoded frames and side information at the decoder also becomes available to improve the quality of reconstructed video frames. Experimental result shows that compared to separate encoding, up to 9.53% of the bit rate can be saved by the proposed MT scheme using decoder depth information, while up to 5.65% can be saved by the scheme without depth camera information. Comparisons to joint video coding schemes are also provided.

This paper introduces a correlation histogram method for analyzing the different components of depth-enhanced 3D video representations. Depth-enhanced 3D representations such as multi-view video plus depth consist of two components: video and depth map sequences. As depth maps represent the scene geometry, their characteristics differ from the video data. We present a comparative analysis that identifies the significant characteristics of the two components via correlation histograms. These characteristics are of special importance for compression. Modern video codecs like H.264/AVC are highly optimized to the statistical properties of natural video. Therefore the effect of compressing the two components using the MVC extension of H.264/AVC is evaluated in the second part of the analysis. The presented results show that correlation histograms are a powerful and well-suited method for analyzing the impact of processing on the characteristics of depth-enhanced 3D video.

While much of multiview video coding focuses on the rate-distortion performance of compressing all frames of all views for storage or non-interactive video delivery over networks, we address the problem of designing a frame structure to enable interactive multiview streaming, where clients can interactively switch views during video playback. Thus, as a client is playing back successive frames (in time) for a given view, it can send a request to the server to switch to a different view while continuing uninterrupted temporal playback. Noting that standard tools for random access (i.e., I-frame insertion) can be bandwidth-inefficient for this application, we propose a redundant representation of I-, P-, and "merge" frames, where each original picture can be encoded into multiple versions, appropriately trading off expected transmission rate with storage, to facilitate view switching. We first present ad hoc frame structures with good performance when the view-switching probabilities are either very large or very small. We then present optimization algorithms that generate more general frame structures with better overall performance for the general case. We show in our experiments that we can generate redundant frame structures offering a range of tradeoff points between transmission and storage, e. g., outperforming simple I-frame insertion structures by up to 45% in terms of bandwidth efficiency at twice the storage cost.

DIRECT Mode Early Decision Optimization Based on Rate Distortion Cost Property and Inter-view Correlation

In this paper, an Efficient DIRECT Mode Early Decision (EDMED) algorithm is proposed for low complexity multiview video coding. Two phases are included in the proposed EDMED: 1) early decision of DIRECT mode is made before doing time-consuming motion estimation/disparity estimation, where adaptive rate-distortion (RD) cost threshold, inter-view DIRECT mode correlation and coded block pattern are jointly utilized;and 2) false rejected DIRECT mode macroblocks of the first phase are then successfully terminated based on weighted RD cost comparison between 16x16 and DIRECT modes for further complexity reduction. Experimental results show that the proposed EDMED algorithm achieves 11.76% more complexity reduction than that achieved by the state-of-the-art SDMET for the temporal views. Also, it achieves a reduction of 50.98% to 81.13% (69.15% on average) in encoding time for inter-view, which is 29.31% and 15.03% more than the encoding time reduction achieved by the state-of-the-art schemes. Meanwhile, the average Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) degrades 0.05 dB and average bit rate increases by -0.37%, which is negligible.

Systematic analysis of the decoding delay in multiview video

We present a framework for the analysis of the decoding delay in multiview video coding (MVC). We show that in real-time applications, an accurate estimation of the decoding delay is essential to achieve a minimum communication latency. As opposed to single-view codecs, the complexity of the multiview prediction structure and the parallel decoding of several views requires a systematic analysis of this decoding delay, which we solve using graph theory and a model of the decoder hardware architecture. Our framework assumes a decoder implementation in general purpose multi-core processors with multi-threading capabilities. For this hardware model, we show that frame processing times depend on the computational load of the decoder and we provide an iterative algorithm to compute jointly frame processing times and decoding delay. Finally, we show that decoding delay analysis can be applied to design decoders with the objective of minimizing the communication latency of the MVC system. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. Compression of the statistical redundancy among different viewpoints, i.e., inter-view redundancy, is a fundamental and critical problem in multiview and three-dimensional (3D) video coding. To exploit the inter-view redundancy, disparity vectors are required to identify pixels of the same objects within two different views;in this way, the enhancement coding tools can be efficiently employed as new modes in block-based video codecs to achieve higher compression efficiency. Although disparity can be converted from depth, it is not possible in multiview video coding since depth information is not considered. Even when depth information is coded, it breaks the so-called multiview compatibility wherein texture views can be decoded without depth information. To resolve this problem, in this paper, a neighboring block-based disparity vector derivation (NBDV) method is proposed. The basic concept of NBDV is to derive a disparity vector (DV) of a current block by utilizing the motion information of spatially and temporally neighboring blocks predicted from another view. Through extensive experiments and analysis, it is shown that the proposed NBDV method achieves efficient DV derivation in the state-of-art video codecs, and it keeps the multiview compatibility with a relatively lower complexity. The proposed method has become an essential part of the 3D video standard extensions of H.264/AVC and HEVC.
