Multi-view video consists of a set of multiple video sequences from multiple viewpoints or view directions in the same scene. It contains extremely a large amount of data and some extra information to be stored or transmitted to the user and computational complexity of processing. In order to achieve a better coding performance in multi-view video coding (MVC), the search range for both motion estimation (ME) and disparity estimation (DE) are set twice as large as necessary for ME alone, which brings great computational complexity to the encoder. Search range (SR) of motion search constraints current block to search the matched block within a predefined area in the reference picture. This research proposed an algorithm to solve the redundancy reduction problem to get fast disparity and motion estimation for reducing complexity. We use geometry and adaptive search range by adjust macroblock (MB) type that suitable with window SR. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the encoding time, so that the encoder complexity can be reduced but achieves almost the same compress quality. The encoding time reduce up more than 70%.

This paper proposes the use of view synthesis prediction for reducing rate-overhead incurred by transmitting depth-maps in free viewpoint TV applications. In particular, the scenario in which depth-maps with varying-degrees of quality is available at the decoder for free viewpoint video applications is considered. The depth-map for each view is encoded separately from the multiview video and used to generate intermediate views as well as view synthesis prediction for coding efficiency improvement. It is shown that the rate overhead incurred by coding high-quality depth maps can be offset by reducing the necessary bitrate for coding multiview (texture) video with the proposed technique. The effect of down-sampling as well as the use of different QPs for the depth map are also discussed.

3D-AVC, being developed under Joint Collaborative Team on 3D video coding (JCT-3V), significantly outperforms the multiview video coding plus Depth (MVC+D) which has no new macroblock level coding tools compared to multiview video coding extension of H.264/AVC (MVC). However, for multiview compatible configuration, i.e., when texture views are decoded without accessing depth information, the performance of the current 3D-AVC is only marginally better than MVC+D. The problem is caused by the lack of disparity vectors which can be obtained only from the coded depth views in 3D-AVC. In this paper, a disparity vector derivation method is proposed by using the motion information of neighboring blocks and applied along with existing coding tools in 3D-AVC. The proposed method improves 3D-AVC in the multiview compatible mode substantially, resulting in about 20% bitrate reduction for texture coding. When enabling the so-called view synthesis prediction to further refine the disparity vectors, the performance of the proposed method is 31% better than MVC+D and even better than 3D-AVC under the best performing 3D-AVC configuration.

3D-AVC being developed under Joint Collaborative Team on 3D video coding (JCT-3V) significantly outperforms the multiview video coding plus Depth (MVC+D) which simultaneously encodes texture views and depth views with the multiview extension of H. 264/AVC (MVC). However, when the 3D-AVC is configured to support multiview compatibility in which texture views are decoded without depth information, the coding performance becomes significantly degraded. The reason is that advanced coding tools incorporated into the 3D-AVC do not perform well due to the lack of a disparity vector converted from the depth information. In this paper, we propose a disparity vector derivation method utilizing only the information of texture views. Motion information of neighboring blocks is used to determine a disparity vector for a macroblock, so that the derived disparity vector is efficiently used for the coding tools in 3D-AVC. The proposed method significantly improves a coding gain of the 3D-AVC in the multiview compatible mode about 20% BD-rate saving in the coded views and 26% BD-rate saving in the synthesized views on average.

In asymmetric stereoscopic video coding, one view is coded in a quarter of the resolution of the other and the low-resolution view is predicted from the high-resolution view. This way, stereoscopic video effect could be achieved with only moderately increased bandwidth and complexity. Inter-view prediction tools for generating the predictor of a maroblock (MB) or MB partition in the low-resolution view from the high-resolution view play a vital role for coding efficiency in asymmetric video coding. In this paper, we propose a method that applies an adaptive filter to generate picture-level adaptive inter-view predictors for MBs or MB partitions. At the encoder, a low complexity preprocessing module is built to find out the filters. Simulation results show that the proposed method provides a bit-rate saving of 26% at maximum and 5% on average.

We present a preliminary study on the Rate-Distortion (RD) gain that can be achieved applying RD optimization techniques in a multiview plus depth encoder. We consider the use of multiview video coding (MVC) for both, color and depth sequences, and evaluate the improvement that can be obtained allowing a quantization parameter (QP) assignment on a macroblock basis compared to the use of a fixed QP for the whole sequence. The optimization criterion is the minimization of the distortion of the synthesized views generated at the receiver. Our motivation for this criterion is to capture the impact of depth coding according to its final purpose: the generation of virtual views. Since a unique objective quality metric for view synthesis artifacts evaluation has not been set yet, the performance of several algorithms for quality evaluation of the target synthesized view have been compared. Beyond obtaining a better RD performance, as could be expected, results also show that optimized synthesized views achieve absolute lower distortion values than the best result of the approach that uses a fixed QP for the whole sequence.

We present a novel framework for encoding latency analysis of arbitrary multiview video coding prediction structures. This framework avoids the need to consider an specific encoder architecture for encoding latency analysis by assuming an unlimited processing capacity on the multiview encoder. Under this assumption, only the influence of the prediction structure and the processing times have to be considered, and the encoding latency is solved systematically by means of a graph model. The results obtained with this model are valid for a multiview encoder with sufficient processing capacity and serve as a lower bound otherwise. Furthermore, with the objective of low latency encoder design with low penalty on rate-distortion performance, the graph model allows us to identify the prediction relationships that add higher encoding latency to the encoder. Experimental results for JMVM prediction structures illustrate how low latency prediction structures with a low rate-distortion penalty can be derived in a systematic manner using the new model.

We consider multiview video compression: the problem of jointly compressing multiple views of a scene recorded by different cameras. To take advantage of the correlation between views, we propose using disparity compensated view prediction and view synthesis and describe how these features can be implemented by extending the H.264/AVC compression standard. Finally, we discuss experimental results on the test sequences from the MPEG Call for Proposals on multiview video.

In this paper, two image quality metrics based on morphological multiscale decompositions have been applied for the evaluation of free viewpoint video sequences. These sequences are synthesized using decompressed depth maps in the Depth-Image-Based Rendering synthesis process. Since the synthesis introduces edge distortion in the synthesized image/video, morphological filters are used for their ability to maintain important geometric information (i.e., edges) across different resolution levels. The edges displacement in different resolution scales is evaluated by means of the Mean Square Error. The adopted metrics show higher correlation with human judgment than state-of-the-art image quality measures used in this context.
