Inter-turn short circuit fault is the main fault type of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), so online monitor and fault diagnose are particularly necessary for DFIG. However, due to the presence of the generator external imbalances, winding inter-turn fault diagnosis is difficult. Based on the finite element model, we analyzed the negative sequence current and harmonic components generated by the rotor winding inter-turn fault of DFIG. We get the features of rotor inter-turn fault in DFIG, and the fault characteristics in the case of grid imbalance.

This paper introduces an algorithm with a very low computational complexity, which enables to detect rotor asymmetries in induction motors. The proposed approach is based on calculating the negative sequence component of the startup stator currents, and enables to visualize the characteristic pattern of the lower sideband component (LSH) during the startup transient. Unlike previous published approaches, the proposed method does not need to use either frequency domain transforms nor time-frequency transforms or complex mathematic functions. Thus it can he implemented as an embedded algorithm in preexisting electronic devices or in low cost devices such as DSPs or tablets. In this paper the method is theoretically justified and validated through simulation and laboratory tests.

Based on the concept of space vector, an adaptive detecting method for fundamental positive and negative sequence components and harmonic components is proposed in this paper, and a detailed theory analysis has also been done. The results show that for fundamental component detecting loop, the proposed adaptive detecting method is equivalent to an ideal second order band-pass filter, while for harmonic detecting loop the proposed detecting method is equivalent to an ideal second order notch-filter. When the input signal is seriously distorted, in order to eliminate the effects of the higher order characteristic harmonics on the detecting precision, low pass filters are added in series with an integrator to reduce the variation of weights generated by high order harmonics. Both theory analyses and simulation results have proved the validity of the proposed method.

As a kind of large-power, single-phase and nonlinear load, the electrified railway produces a great deal of harmonic, which has a severe impact on the power quality in power system. In this paper, a set of practical indicators is put forward firstly, in order to analyze the transmission characteristics of the harmonics and negative sequence voltage and current in power network quantitatively. Secondly, based on a test data in a real electrified railway station and its electric supply station, the distribution and transmission situation of harmonics and negative sequence component of electric traction loads is analyzed. The transmission characteristics of the third, the fifth and the seventh harmonics, which are the main harmonic component of electrified railway load, are specially studied in this paper. Finally, an electromagnetism transient model of a power grid containing typical electric locomotives and tractive power supply system is established using PSCAD/EMTDC. The transmission characteristic of negative sequence component between two voltage grades was researched by simulation. The results show that the transmission characteristics of the simulation data are consistent with that of the test data, thus proving the correctness of the model. The influence of negative sequence component of electric traction loads to adjacent load substations are studied in the established model as a case study.

To facilitate relay operation and mitigate unbalanced voltage conditions, recent specifications mandate negative sequence control in grid-forming inverter-based resources (GFM IBRs). Adhering to this requirement, sequence-decomposed modules (SDMs) must be integrated into the control system to detect and extract sequence components. However, the introduction of SDMs induces cross-coupled effects in the dq-frame, potentially making GFM IBRs susceptible to subsynchronous oscillations (SSOs)-an aspect not thoroughly investigated previously. This study addresses this gap by initially exploring the stability issue using single-input single-output small-signal models of GFM IBRs with SDMs. To mitigate SSO instability risks, a damping enhancement control scheme is then proposed, based on the fundamental hybrid synchronization control principle. By leveraging the q-axis positive sequence voltage from the SDM as a feedforward loop, system stability is significantly enhanced with promising damping capabilities. Simulation and controller hardware-in-the-loop tests, conducted across varying grid strengths, validate both the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed control.

The development of an unbalanced switching scheme for the power conditioning system of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) device is described. The pulse-width modulation switching scheme for a current-source inverter, based on the unified switching algorithm, is presented. A device sequencing scheme and pulse merging arrangement is developed which minimises low-order harmonics. The balanced switching scheme is extended to an unbalanced scheme where the positive and negative sequence components of the output AC currents are controlled directly by their respective modulation indices and delay angles. The switching scheme is implemented on an experimental SMES device and its performance is assessed with respect to modulation linearity, harmonic generation, independent control of active and reactive power, and independent control of sequence currents.

Impact of Inverter-Based Resources on negative sequence Quantities-Based Protection Elements

Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs), including Wind turbine generators (WTGs), exhibit substantially different negative-sequence fault current characteristics compared to synchronous generators (SGs). These differences may cause misoperation of customary negative-sequence-based protective elements set under the assumption of a conventional SG dominated power system. The amplitude of the negative-sequence fault current of a WTG is smaller than that of an SG. This may lead to misoperation of the negative-sequence overcurrent elements 50Q/51Q. Moreover, the angular relation of the negative-sequence current and voltage is different under WTGs, which may result in the misoperation of directional negative-sequence overcurrent element 67Q. This paper first studies the key differences between the WTGs and SG by comparing their equivalent negative-sequence impedances with SG's. Then, simulation case studies are presented showing the misoperation of 50Q and 67Q due to wind generation and the corresponding impact on communication-assisted protection and fault identification scheme (FID). The impact on directional element is also experimentally validated in a hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation set up using a physical relay. Finally, the paper studies the impact of various factors such as WTG type (Type-III/Type-IV) and Type-IV WTG control scheme (coupled/decoupled sequence) to determine the key features that need to be considered in practical protection studies. The objective is to show potential protection misoperation issues, identify the cause, and propose potential solutions.

Islanding detection technique based on relevance vector machine

This study present a new islanding detection technique based on relevance vector machine (RVM) containing various types of distributed generations (DGs). The proposed scheme is based on utilising negative sequence component of current (I-2), acquired at the terminal of the target DG. Various islanding and non-islanding events with variable real and reactive power, change in network topology and diverse X/R ratio have been generated by modelling IEEE 34 bus system in real time digital simulator (RTDS (R)/RSCAD) environment. The samples of I-2 for one cycle duration from the inception of islanding/non-islanding events are given as input to the proposed RVM classifier. The proposed classifier is able to discriminate between islanding and non-islanding events with an accuracy of 98.62% by utilising only 40% of the total dataset in training. Moreover, it is capable to classify islanding condition rapidly and correctly even with perfect power balance situation. Furthermore, it remains immune to change in network configuration/entirely different network and X/R ratio of various types of DGs. Comparative analysis of the proposed scheme in terms of accuracy, testing time and number of relevance vectors (RVs) with the existing schemes shows its superiority in discriminating islanding situation with non-islanding events.

Direct power control of voltage source inverters with unbalanced grid voltages

A new approach of direct power control (DPC) of a voltage source inverter for achieving symmetrical grid currents under unbalanced grid voltage conditions is presented. In these situations, negative sequence components appear on the grid voltage vector, leading to distorted currents if the power is maintained constant. Nevertheless, sinusoidal balanced grid currents can be achieved through control. Several current controllers have already been modified to overcome voltage imbalance with good results. Here, sinusoidal grid currents are obtained by directly controlling power, which becomes a novel approach and keeps DPC philosophy. A phase locked loop is necessary to obtain positive sequence voltage angle. A very simple positive and negative sequence calculator is also used so that power references can be modified in order to obtain balanced grid currents. Simulated and experimental results are presented to confirm the validity of the method.
