The problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of quasi-stationary signals using a nested array in unknown noise field is investigated and two methods based on differencing method and eigenspace are proposed in this paper. Through performing differencing between the virtual received data, the unknown noise component is directly removed from the data model. The resulting data model is then utilized to find out the DOAs of the signals based on the theory of subspace. Thanks to the configuration of the nested array, it can produce large degrees of freedom (DOF) in the virtual sensor array which provides the virtual received data. These increased DOF can contribute enhanced resolution in DOA estimation. Numerical simulations of DOA estimation exhibit the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed methods.

Millimeter wave systems often have very few number of RF chains as compared to the number of antenna elements in order to reduce power consumption and complexity. In this work, we study the design of the mapping function Q(N) (X) (r) from the antenna element space of size N to the reduced beamspace dimension r. In the first part of this paper, we restrict the mapping function to antenna selection matrix that chooses antenna elements in a large ULA to form a nested array. For r <= 2 root N - 1, we can identify such nested arrays using appropriate selection matrices. For r > 2 root N - 1, we select elements associated with each additional RF chain to maximally improve CRLB for a limited scattering environment, modeled using a single angle of arrival. The above design of the mapping function lacks beamforming (BF) gain, which is crucial for the channel estimation (CE) phase in mmWave communications. In the second part of the paper, we design a mapping function Q(N) (X) (r) that provides BF gain while forming an approximate nested array, when focused in an appropriately narrow angular space.

The 2q-level nested array has been studied for its high resolution performance in direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. The combination of the 2qth-order cumulant and 2qth-order difference coarray will further improve the degrees of freedom (DOFs) of the 2q-level nested array. However the 2qth-order difference coarray of the 2q-level nested array has some holes. In this paper, the multi-frequency method is applied to till the holes, so that a much longer uniform linear array (ULA) is formed. The effective DOFs are thus expanded and the DOA estimation performance is improved. Simulations arc conducted to validate the performance of the proposed method.

In this paper, a novel multi-target direction finding approach is proposed for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar exploiting nested array. In our MIMO radar model, the transmit antennas are widely spaced to enable transmit diversity, while the receiver of the MIMO radar is configured with a 2-level nested array to enable direction finding. The nested array is an emerging non-uniform linear array (NLA) which can contain a large number of virtual sensors in MIMO radar system. When multiple targets are closely located in spatial domain, the proposed approach can significantly enhance the resolution and estimation accuracy relative to the conventional method with uniform linear array (ULA). In the proposed approach, no peaking searching is needed. Notably, it fits the situation that the number of targets is equal or even larger than that of the receive sensors, which is unavailable for the conventional MIMO radar system. The simulations validate the performance of the proposed approach.

In this paper, a method of grating lobes and sidelobes suppression for distributed two-level nested array is presented. The method combines the distributed nested array structure and the pattern product theorem to obtain a distributed two-level nested array two-way pattern, which can effectively suppress the grating lobes and sidelobes. The Chebyshev window is used to design the weights of the transmit array pattern to achieve ultralow sidelobes performance. Numerical simulations are provided for testing the proposed method. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which will help to improve the detection performance of radar.

This paper presents a new extended nested array geometry with enhanced degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) and a hole-free difference coarray for Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation applications. The array is developed by distributing the sensor of the dense section of the nested array to the nested array's outer subarray while retaining a hole-free difference coarray. The rendered extended nested array has enhanced array aperture and a hole-free difference coarray compared to most existing nested array configurations. Moreover, the proposed array has a closed-form expression for array sensor location and reduced mutual coupling due to sparsely located sensors. Numerical simulations show that the proposed array offers improved DOA estimation resolution than other conventional sparse arrays due to the enhanced aperture.

The performance of array based direction finding system highly depends on array geometry, SNR, numbers of snapshot and adaptive algorithms used. The non-uniform array gives better accuracy and resolution than uniform linear array. nested array a non-uniform array gives better accuracy and resolution and a larger degrees of freedom. This paper deals with model based approach and application of EKF algorithm using nested array for DOA estimation. A number of simulations have been carried out to demonstrate the performance of model based approach with nested array using EKF algorithm under different SNR condition.

To estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of wideband signals from nested arrays, a Wideband Smooth Reconstruction Block Sparse Bayesian Learning (WSR-BSBL) algorithm is proposed. Firstly, a segmented broadband signal frequency domain single measurement vector DOA estimation model is established. The single-measurement vector DOA estimation model is transformed into a multi-measurement vector model by smooth reconstruction, which reduces the dimension of the compressed perceptual dictionary matrix. The multi-measurement vector model is then solved by utilizing the block sparse Bayesian learning algorithm to estimate the broadband signal's baud direction. This reduces the solution complexity of the sparse Bayesian learning algorithm. According to the experimental results, the technique significantly improves estimation performance over the state-of-the-art approaches and effectively addresses the issue of the high complexity of the DOA estimation algorithm for nested array broadband signals.

Recently, nested array has been proposed to estimate the direction of arrival (DoA) of O(N-2) sources using only O(N) physical sensors. In this paper, we investigate a new method to achieve higher degrees of freedom for the nested array for non-circular sources. By exploiting the properties of the signal sources, a new model is constructed based on a longer virtual uniform linear array (ULA). Simulation results show that the proposed method can identify more sources with N sensors and improves the DoA estimation accuracy.

In this paper, we investigate the issue of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of non-circular (NC) signals, and propose a modified nested array with enhanced degrees of freedom (DOFs) and a vectorized NC propagator method (VNC-PM) algorithm which can utilize the difference-sum co-array to perform DOA estimation. Specifically, we modify the conventional nested array by switching the positions of the two subarrays aiming to obtain a difference-sum co-array with higher DOFs. In order to fully exploit the provided DOFs and obtain higher estimation accuracy, we utilize the NC characteristic to generate the equivalent received signal of the difference-sum co-array and exploit the quasi-stationary property of the signal to avoid the spatial smoothing technique which leads to the DOF degradation. The modified PM based on the rotational invariance is then employed to obtain DOA estimates, where NC phases can be eliminated. Simulations are provided to evaluate the superiority of the proposed configuration and DOA estimation algorithm.
