System flow centrality index for evaluating the influence of a given system element in a network graph

This paper introduces a novel System Flow Centrality (SFC) index for evaluating node importance in network graphs, with a specific focus on system architecture analysis. Unlike traditional centrality measures such as betweenness centrality (BC), the SFC index considers all system paths and cycles, providing a more comprehensive assessment of a node's influence within the network. We present both a basic SFC algorithm and an enhanced version that incorporates system element classification, allowing for more nuanced analysis of component properties. The proposed index is validated through application to various network topologies, including common IEEE bus system configurations and a real-world medical motor driver architecture. Comparative analysis with established centrality measures demonstrates the SFC index's superior performance in identifying critical nodes, particularly in complex and asymmetric network structures. The SFC index shows promise as a valuable tool for multidisciplinary project teams, offering potential benefits in risk assessment, resource allocation, quality management optimization, and decision-making processes across diverse applications. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on network analysis and system architecture evaluation, providing a more accurate and system-oriented approach to quantifying node importance in complex networks.

Architectural Exploration for Waferscale Switching System

mymargin2 With the end of Moore's law and Dennard scaling, waferscale systems or processors that integrate multiple pre-tested known good dies (KGDs) on a waferscale-interposer are new approaches to further improve the chiplet-based system's performance. This article explores the network on wafer (NoW) architecture of waferscale switching system under several physical constraints. A software-based approach is proposed to redefine the topological property. A five-level butterfly fat-tree (BFT)-like logical topology with 8.96-Tb/s (896 ports $\times$ 10 Gb/s/port) switching bandwidth is achieved based on 2-D-mesh-like physical topology. We show that the proposed BFT-like topology with breadth-first-search (BFS) based traffic balanced routing algorithm reduces 55.6% hops, 41.4% transmission delay, and improves 24.2% throughput compared to 2-D-mesh-like topology under different traffic distributions. This BFT-like waferscale switching system is suitable for high-performance computing and data centers. In addition, the numerical analysis shows that the waferscale package can provide significant power efficiency and latency advantages compared to the typical single-chip package, which mainly benefits from the short-reach IO requirements. Note that the proposed waferscale switching system is compatible with high-switch-capacity dies with advanced process technology, which can further improve system performance. Finally, we present the physical implementations for the waferscale system with heterogeneous dies.

A Dataflow-Oriented Programming Interface for Named Data networking

Inheriting from a data-driven communication pattern other than a location-driven pattern, named data net- working （NDN） offers better support to network-layer dataflow. However, the application developers have to handle complex tasks, such as data segmentation, packet verification, and flow control, due to the lack of proper transport-layer protocols over the network layer. In this study, we design a dataflow-oriented programming interface to provide transport strategies for NDN, which greatly improves the efficiency in developing applications. This interface presents two application data unit; （ADU） retrieval strategies according to different data publishing patterns, in which it adopts an adaptive ADU pipelining algorithm to control the dataflow based on the current network status and data generation rate. The interface also offers network measurement strategies to monitor an abundance of critical metrics infuencing the application performance. We verify the functionality and performance of our interface by implementing a video streaming application spanning 11 time zones over the worldwide NDN testbed. Our experiments show that the interface can efficiently support developing high-performance and dataflow-driven NDN applications.

With the increasing demand for vast storage repositories, network storage has become important for mass data storage and processing, telescopic addressing and availability, and the quality of service and security of data storage. This situation demands the emergence of new technology in the data storage field. In this paper, TH-MSNS, a SAN system, is introduced. This system was designed and implemented based on the Fiber Channel Protocol and its I/O route was tested. This paper introduces some of the key techniques in the network storage system, including an SCSI simulating target, intelligent and uniform storage management architecture, and the processing flow of the read/write commands. The software for the new storage area network system was implemented as a module in the kernel mode to improve its efficiency. The SCSI target adopts a layered design and standardized interface, which is compatible with various types of SCSI devices and can use different network protocols. The storage management software adopts distributed architecture, which enables higher interoperability and compatibility with various kinds of management protocols. TH-MSNS boasts characteristics such as high adaptability, high efficiency, high scalability, and high compatibility and is easy to maintain.

network architectures for collaborative virtual reality have traditionally been dominated by client-server and peer-to-peer approaches, with peer-to-peer strategies typically being favored where minimizing latency is a priority, and client-server where consistency is key. With increasingly sophisticated behavior models and the demand for better support for haptics, we argue that neither approach provides sufficient support for these scenarios and, thus, a hybrid architecture is required. We discuss the relative performance of different distribution strategies in the face of real network conditions and illustrate the problems they face. Finally, we present an architecture that successfully meets many of these challenges and demonstrate its use in a distributed virtual prototyping application which supports simultaneous collaboration for assembly, maintenance, and training applications utilizing haptics.

Scalable Localization with Mobility Prediction for Underwater Sensor networks

Due to harsh aqueous environments, non-negligible node mobility and large network scale, localization for large-scale mobile underwater sensor networks is very challenging. In this paper, by utilizing the predictable mobility patterns of underwater objects, we propose a scheme, called Scalable Localization scheme with Mobility Prediction (SLMP), for underwater sensor networks. In SLMP, localization is performed in a hierarchical way, and the whole localization process is divided into two parts: anchor node localization and ordinary node localization. During the localization process, every node predicts its future mobility pattern according to its past known location information, and it can estimate its future location based on the predicted mobility pattern. Anchor nodes with known locations in the network will control the localization process in order to balance the trade-off between localization accuracy, localization coverage, and communication cost. We conduct extensive simulations, and our results show that SLMP can greatly reduce localization communication cost while maintaining relatively high localization coverage and localization accuracy.

Formalization and configuration methodology for high-radix combined switches

In large switch-based interconnection networks, increasing the switch radix results in a decrease in the total number of network components, and consequently the overall cost of the network can be significantly reduced. Moreover, high-radix switches are an attractive option to improve the network performance in terms of latency since hop count is also reduced. However, there are some difficulties related to integration scale to design such switches. In this paper we present and formalize an interesting alternative for building high-radix switches going beyond the integration scale bounds. The idea basically consists in combining several current smaller switches to obtain switches having greater number of ports. This strategy will remain valid as the scale of integration keeps evolving. Although simple, this strategy raises key design challenges in order to these high-radix switches achieve the best performance. The resultant internal structure of these switches becomes an important design decision, and an arbitrary selection may produce a significant performance degradation. For this reason, we also propose a general methodology to configure in an optimal way the internal switch structure and apply it to a particular case in order to show how it works. The resultant switch configurations are evaluated in order to show the real potential of our proposal.

An Efficient Directed Localization Recursion Protocol for Wireless Sensor networks

The establishment of a localization system is an important task in wireless sensor networks. Due to the geographical correlation between sensed data, location information is commonly used to name the gathered data and address nodes and regions in data dissemination protocols. In general, to estimate its location, a node needs the position information of at least three reference points (neighbors that know their positions). In this work, we propose a different scheme in which only two reference points are required in order to estimate a position. To choose between the two possible solutions of an estimate, we use the known direction of the recursion. This approach leads to a recursive localization system that works with low-density networks (increasing by 40 percent the number of nodes with estimates in some cases), reduces the position error by almost 30 percent, requires 37 percent less processor resources to estimate a position, uses fewer beacon nodes, and also indicates the node position error based on its distance to the recursion origin. No GPS-enabled node is required, since the recursion origin can be used as a relative coordinate system. The algorithm's evaluation is performed by comparing it with a similar localization system;also, experiments are made to evaluate the impact of both systems in geographic algorithms.

Bandwidth aggregation for real-time applications in heterogeneous wireless networks

A variety of wireless interfaces are available for today's mobile user to access Internet content. When coverage areas of these different technologies overlap, a terminal equipped with multiple interfaces can use them simultaneously to improve the performance of its applications. In this paper, we motivate the advantages that can be had through simultaneous use of multiple interfaces and present a network layer architecture that enables diverse multiaccess services. In particular, we explore in depth one such service provided by the architecture: Bandwidth Aggregation (BAG) for real-time applications. An important aspect of the architecture when providing BAG services for real-time applications is the scheduling algorithm that partitions the traffic onto different interfaces such that the QoS requirements of the application are met. We propose one such algorithm Earliest Delivery Path First (EDPF), that ensures packets meet their playback deadlines by scheduling packets based on the estimated delivery time of the packets. We show through analysis that EDPF performs close to an idealized Aggregated Single Link (ASL) discipline, where the multiple interfaces are replaced by a single interface with same aggregated bandwidth. A prototype implementation and extensive simulations carried using video and delay traces show the performance improvement BAG with EDPF scheduling offers over using just the Highest Bandwidth Interface (HBI) and other scheduling approaches based on weighted round robin.

A scalable overlay multicast architecture for large-scale applications

In this paper, we propose a Two-tier Overlay Multicast architecture (TOMA) to provide scalable and efficient multicast support for various group communication applications. In TOMA, Multicast Service Overlay network (MSON) is advocated as the backbone service domain, while end users in access domains form a number of small clusters, in which an application-layer multicast protocol is used for the communication between the clustered end users. TOMA is able to provide efficient resource utilization with less control overhead, especially for large-scale applications. It also alleviates the state scalability problem and simplifies multicast tree construction and maintenance when there are large numbers of groups in the network. To help MSON providers efficiently plan backbone service overlay, we suggest several provisioning algorithms to locate proxies, select overlay links, and allocate link bandwidth. Extensive simulation studies demonstrate the promising performance of TOMA.
