NFV and SDN-Based Differentiated Traffic Treatment for Residential networks

Residential networks play a critical role in assuring that services or applications such as tele-work, tele-education, medical care, entertainment, home automation, among others, have the required resources to obtain an optimal performance. Although current residential gateways try to meet the Quality of Service (QoS) demands, the traditional networking paradigm does not have the appropriate mechanisms to address the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of the services running at home. In this context, a feasible solution consists of leveraging the flexibility and adaptability of the Software Defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) paradigms to provide a differentiated traffic treatment intended to improve the QoS support of residential networks. The proposal takes advantage of the Service Function Chaining (SFC) concept intrinsic to NFV as well as the capacity of an SDN-based residential gateway to differentiate the traffic of a certain application. Thus, an association between an SFC and the differentiated traffic is stablished to apply a specific treatment. Besides, a comprehensive architecture composed of the software defined residential network (SDRN), the software defined access network (SDOAN) and the NFV-compliant ISP's edge cloud infrastructure is envisioned. This architecture would allow dramatically improving the life cycle management of the residential network from a centralized point which follows a user-centric approach.

Paving the Way for NFV Acceleration: A Taxonomy, Survey and Future Directions

As a recent innovation, network functions virtualization (NFV)-with its core concept of replacing hardware middleboxes with software network functions (NFs) implemented in commodity servers-promises cost savings and flexibility benefits. However, transitioning NFs fromspecial-purpose hardware to commodity servers has turned out to be more challenging than expected, as it inevitably incurs performance penalties due to bottlenecks in both software and hardware. To achieve performance comparable to hardware middleboxes, there is a strong demand for a speedup in NF processing, which plays a crucial role in the success of NFV. In this article, we study the performance challenges that exist in general-purpose servers and simultaneously summarize the typical performance bottlenecks in NFV. Through reviewing the progress in the field of NFV acceleration, we present a new taxonomy of the state-of-the-art efforts according to various acceleration approaches. We discuss the surveyed works and identify the respective advantages and disadvantages in each category. We then discuss the products, solutions, and projects emerged in industry. We also present a gap analysis to improve current solutions and highlight promising research trends that can be explored in the future.

This paper introduces the innovative Mobile Mist Computing ((MC)-C-2) concept by addressing a reference architectural model for vehicular networks capable of supporting complex mobile services with stringent time-space constraints. Cellular technology, thank to its coverage, data rates and latencies, is generally considered the key enabler to support real-time vehicular applications. Moreover, their integration with the emerging Fog Computing (FC) paradigm can reduce the of the core network, thus minimising the overall service delay. In this scenario, vehicular mobility represents the most relevant challenge to guarantee service continuity, while providing Quality of Service (QoS), especially when Fog Servers (FSs) have limited resources. To this purpose, FC has been firstly integrated with the Software Defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) concepts and, subsequently the dynamic replacement of vehicular services (ie, VNF migration) among FSs has been investigated to properly accommodate users mobility. Finally, an optimised strategy, called swapping migration, that can optimise both resources utilisation and outage rate, has been introduced. The proposed scheme has been validated by means of numerical simulations and compared with several benchmarks over realistic scenarios by pointing out latency and reliability as a function of the services request rate and the transmission capacity.

network functions virtualization (NFV) promotes a paradigm shift in the core network, by enabling the execution of network functions on a virtualized software plane instead of on dedicated hardware. Despite its benefits, NFV introduces new challenges, of which we highlight those related to the deployment of virtualized network services. Current NFV deployment solutions (i.e., those for composition, embedding, and scheduling) are usually limited to optimize hard-coded criteria, and cannot be customized to address specific demands defined by both network operators and NFV-as-a-Service customers. In this paper, we present a customizable NFV deployment framework that allows multiple criteria and multiple objectives to be applied to service composition, embedding, and scheduling. We evaluate the proposed framework integrated to deployment solutions specified in the literature. A case study is presented for the customized deployment of a traffic control and security service, and demonstrates the flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed framework.

VNF placement and traffic steering have received considerable attention in the literature, ever since business pressures started driving telecom operators to embrace virtualization technologies instead of continuing with the expensive "dedicated hardware and appliance" approach. However, most proposed solutions are not exact. When the formulated problem results in an Integer Linear Program (ILP) or a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP), the focus shifts to searching for heuristics. We show that using the Column Generation (CG) technique, exact solutions can be obtained quickly. The CG approach can be used to solve problems in both offline and online scenarios. For the aggregate bandwidth minimization problem, the exact solution provided by CG improves significantly upon "DP-COA", a recently proposed heuristic. However, aggregate bandwidth minimization can lead to highly uneven link loading. Motivated by this, we formulate another problem in which the objective is to minimize the maximum link bandwidth consumed over all links in the network. This problem is also solved exactly using CG. Results indicate that this approach can help achieve balanced traffic demand placement.

This paper presents a functional solution for the management and orchestration (MANO) of the network Function virtualization (NFV), based on Open Source MANO (OSM). Two different Virtual Infrastructure Managers (VIMs) were tested: OpenVIM and OpenStack. Following the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) requirements two experimental scenarios were devised: (1) with OpenVIM in test mode: two Ubuntu 16.04.6 virtual machines (VMs), hosted by different physical computers, acted as two virtual infrastructure managers (VIMs);one of them was collocated with Open Source MANO (OSM);(2) with OpenStack as a VIM and OSM running on an Ubuntu 18.04 virtual machine. The experimental results helped us defined some best practices for integrating OSM with both VIMs. In the future, we plan on extending the infrastructure orchestrated by OSM to include an SDN controller and several clouds acting as VIMs.

Data infrastructures manage the life cycle of digital assets and allow users to efficiently discover them. To improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Re-usability (FAIRness) of digital assets, a data infrastructure needs to provide digital assets with not only rich meta information and semantics contexts information but also globally resolvable identifiers. The Persistent Identifiers (PIDs), like Digital Object Identifier (DOI) are often used by data publishers and infrastructures. The traditional IP network and client-server model can potentially cause congestion and delays when many consumers simultaneously access data. In contrast, Information Centric networking (ICN) technologies such as Named Data networking (NDN) adopt a data centric approach where digital data objects, once requested, may be stored on intermediate hops in the network. Consecutive requests for that unique digital object are then made available by these intermediate hops (caching). This approach distributes traffic load more efficient and reliable compared to host-to-host connection oriented techniques, and demonstrates attractive opportunities for sharing digital objects across distributed networks. However, such an approach also faces several challenges. It requires not only an effective translation between the different naming schemas among PIDs and NDN, in particular for supporting PIDs from different publishers or repositories. Moreover, the planning and configuration of an ICN environment for distributed infrastructures are lacking an automated solution. To bridge the gap, we propose an ICN planning service with specific consideration of interoperability across PID schemas in the Cloud environment.

In an attempt to assess the suitability of current Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) technologies for fulfilling 5G-ready applications requirements, this paper has exploited the CNIT S2N testbed to perform a validation over a complete 5G ecosystem. The testbed supports the telecom network platform developed within the MATILDA Project, which adopts the vanilla versions of the main reference projects/software suites in the 5G field, such as OpenStack and Open-Source MANO (OSM). By including such familiar technologies in the 5G ecosystem, vertical industries would interact with a familiar environment similar to today's scenarios, which would lower the barrier for creating 5G-ready applications. However, results show that current solutions are blamable for around 99% of the deployment time of applications and network slices, a figure that bumps their lifecycle up to the order of magnitude of minutes proving them still not suitable to fulfill 5G requirements.

The rise of new forms of cyber-threats is mostly due to the extensive use of virtualization paradigms and the increasing adoption of automation in the software life-cycle. To address these challenges we propose an innovative framework that leverages the intrinsic programmability of the cloud and software-defined infrastructures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of reaction mechanisms. In this paper, we present our contributions with a demonstrative use case in the context of Kubernetes. By means of this framework, developers of cybersecurity appliances will not have any more to care about how to react to events or to struggle to define any possible security tasks at design time. In addition, automatic firewall ruleset generation provided by our framework will mostly avoid human intervention, hence decreasing the time to carry out them and the likelihood of errors. We focus our discussions on technical challenges: definition of common actions at the policy level and their translation into configurations for the heterogeneous set of security functions by means of a use case.

La virtualisation est une tentative prometteuse pour résoudre certains défis de la 5G. La virtualisation consiste à exécuter des fonctions réseaux en tant que logiciels sur une infrastructure physique partagée. Cela optimise les coûts de déploiement et simplifie la gestion, mais il introduit de nouveaux défis tels que la topologie de réseau dynamique et le manque de visibilité. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons un algorithme d’auto-modélisation et un processus de diagnostic actif pour relever ces défis. Nous apprenons et validons le modèle défini par injection de pannes. Nous appliquons notre approche au use-case "virtual Ip Multimedia (vIMS)". network functions virtualization (NFV) is one promising attempt at solving some of the 5G challenges. NFV is about running network functions as virtualized workloads on commodity hardware. This may optimize deployment costs and simplify the life cycle management, but it introduces new challenges such as the dynamic network topology and the lack of visibility. In this thesis, we propose a self-modeling algorithm and an active diagnosis process to face these challenges. We define a dependency model learned from faults injection. The self-modeling and the active diagnosis approach was applied to the real-world virtual Ip Multimedia Subsystem (vIMS) use-case.
