A new algorithm FOR CODING GEOLOGICAL TERMINOLOGY

The Geological Survey of The Netherlands has developed an algorithm to convert the plain geological language of lithologic well logs into codes suitable for computer processing and link these to existing plotting programs. The algorithm is based on the "direct method" and operates in three steps: (1) searching for defined word combinations and assigning codes;(2) deleting duplicated codes;(3) correcting incorrect code combinations. Two simple auxiliary files are used. A simple PC demonstration program is included to enable readers to experiment with this algorithm, The Department of Quarternary Geology of the Geological Survey of The Netherlands possesses a large database of shallow lithologic well logs in plain language and has been using a program based on this algorithm for about 3 yr. Erroneous codes resulting from using this algorithm are less than 2%.

A new algorithm FOR THE DESIGN OF LINEAR PREDICTION ERROR FILTERS USING CUMULANT-BASED MSE CRITERIA

This correspondence proposes a new algorithm for the design of (minimum-phase) linear prediction error (LPE) filters using two new cumulant (higher order statistics) based MSE criteria when the given stationary random signal x(n) is nonGaussian and contaminated by Gaussian noise. It is shown that the designed LPE filters based on the proposed criteria are identical to the conventional correlation (second-order statistics) based LPE filter as if x(n) were noise-free measurements. As correlation-based LPE filters, coefficients of the designed cumulant-based LPE filters can be obtained by solving a set of symmetric Toeplitz linear equations using the well-known computationally efficient Levinson-Durbin recursion. Moreover, the proposed two criteria are applicable for any cumulant order M greater than or equal to 3, and one of the proposed criteria for M = 3 reduces to Delopoulos and Giannakis' third-order cumulant-based MSE criterion. Some simulation results are then provided to support the analytical results.

The state of the art in the field of high-power laser transmission is dominated by the so called Vertical Epitaxial Hetero-Structure Architecture (VEHSA), which consists of monolithically stacking p/n cells connected by tunnel junctions. This configuration distributes the current between the cells and reduces the losses due to Joule heating. Since assessing the performance of each individual cell is very challenging, the design and optimization of these devices relies on simple approximations based on the Beer-Lambert law, the exponential decay of light, and guessing from published data. The limitations of these approaches are i) the current of each cell may differ from the calculated photocurrent, producing a mismatch and limiting the overall current, ii) the design parameters cannot be individually evaluated, and iii) the loss of accuracy when applied to devices with light trapping mechanisms. In this work, we present a novel optimization methodology aimed to overcome these limitations, based on a meticulous device Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) and an iterative optimization algorithm with two stages: Photogeneration and Performance Optimization (PhPO). The proposed procedure improves the performance of the current state-of-the-art VEHSA devices, allows the use of new semiconductors and makes the design more resilient to a wide range of operation conditions.

A new algorithm to simulate the dynamics of a glacier: theory and applications

We propose a novel Eulerian algorithm to compute the changes of a glacier geometry for given mass balances. The surface of a glacier is obtained by solving a transport equation for the volume of fluid (VOF). The surface mass balance is taken into account by adding an interfacial term in the transport equation. An unstructured mesh with standard stabilized finite elements is used to solve the non-linear Stokes problem. The VOF function is computed on a structured grid with a high resolution. The algorithm is stable for Courant numbers larger than unity and conserves mass to a high accuracy. To demonstrate the potential of the algorithm, we apply it to reconstructed Late-glacial states of a small valley glacier, Vadret Muragl, in the Swiss Alps.

A new algorithm for efficient direct dynamics calculations of large-curvature tunneling and its application to radical reactions with 9-15 atoms

We present a new algorithm for carrying out large-curvature tunneling calculations that account for extreme corner-cutting tunneling in hydrogen atom, proton, and hydride transfer reactions. The algorithm is based on two-dimensional interpolation in a physically motived set of variables that span the space of tunneling paths and tunneling energies. With this new algorithm, we are able to carry out density functional theory direct dynamics calculations of the rate constants, including multidimensional tunneling, for a set of hydrogen atom transfer reactions involving 9-15 atoms and up to 7 nonhydrogenic atoms. The reactions considered involve the abstraction of a hydrogen atom from hydrocarbons by a trifluoromethyl radical, and in particular, we consider the reactions of CF3 with CH4, C2H6, and C3H8. We also calculate several kinetic isotope effects. The electronic structure is treated by the MPWB1K/6-31+G(d,p) method, which is validated by comparison to experimental results and to CBS-Q, MCG3, and G3SX(MP3) calculations for CF3 + CH4. Harmonic vibrational frequencies along the reaction path are calculated in curvilinear coordinates with scaled frequencies, and anharmonicity is included in the lowest-frequency torsion.

We propose a new iterative algorithm to compute the symmetric solution of the matrix equations AXB = E and CXD = F. The greatest advantage of this new algorithm is higher speed and lower computational cost at each step compared with existing numerical algorithms. We state the solutions of these matrix equations as the intersection point of some closed convex sets, and then we use the alternating projection method to solve them. Finally, we use some numerical examples to show that the new algorithm is feasible and effective.

We introduce a new algorithm to account for the presence of null alleles in inferences of populations clusters from individual multilocus genetic data. We show by simulations that the presence of null alleles can affect the accuracy of inferences if not properly accounted for and that our algorithm improve signficantly their accuracy.

In this study, a new algorithm is presented for two-center overlap integrals, using translation formulas for residual and regular solid spherical harmonics in Slater-type orbitals. The compulational results obtained are in good agreement with the literature and also show a good rate of convergence and good numerical stability under a wide range of quantum numbers, orbital exponents and internuclear distances.

Estimating large rational expectations models by FIML - some experiments using a new algorithm with bootstrap confidence limits

We set out an algorithm, based on a guided grid search procedure, for estimating large rational expectations models by FIML. Confidence limits are established by bootstrapping. We give results for a small four-equation version of the Liverpool Model of the UK and for the full Model;these suggest that there is also some bias to be adjusted for. The required bootstrap number for the small model is less than 200 for convergence of the estimates. Also should there be unit roots in the errors, these have the interpretation, given a fully specified theoretical structure, of omitted variables;in a Montecarlo study of the small model when its errors are unit roots it is found that the main parameter estimates are rather robust, with the error processes capturing these roots. In performing SEM Critical Dimension (CD) measurements on photomasks in dense line and space arrays it is often difficult to distinguish between whether a feature is a line or space. This is a result of tone shifts that occur affecting contrast on target images. The inability to reliably differentiate lines and spaces leads to the inclusion of fliers, or inaccurate measurements into automated measurement results. In an effort to overcome this phenomenon a new algorithm has been developed to increase the robustness of the CD SEM measurements to insure reliable data acquisition. This new algorithm takes into account apparent tone reversals on a variety of today's photomask material types. This paper will detail the various elements of the new algorithm and show before and after test results of improved recognition performance.
