Library Automation and Digital Archive (Lontar) is a library information system developed by Universitas Indonesia and used by its main library. Rapid increase of library collections will soon make query performance of current SQL DBMS, which is MySQL, not fast enough to satisfy users and need to be complemented by nosql database, an emerging technology that specially developed for managing big data. The goal of this research is to implement and analyze the usage of nosql database to improve the query performance of Lontar. MongoDB is selected as nosql DBMS and the result shows that MongoDB is signficantly faster than MySQL.

Nowadays, Demands of web scale are in increasing and growing rapidly. Mobile applications, web technologies, social media always generates unstructured data that had lead to the advent of various nosql databases. Therefore, Big data applications are necessary to have an efficient technology to collect these data. However, a relational database is the traditional database that always uses in many applications and still has more valuable to play a significant role in the current information system. The main characteristics of nosql databases are schema-free, no relationship, no need to join as a relational database. The business organization expects that nosql database has better performance than a relational database. In This paper, we aim to compare the performance of Redis, which is a key-value database, one kind of nosql database, and MariaDB, which is a popular relational database. We designed a set of experiments with a large amount of data and compared the efficiency of the insert, update, delete and select transactions from various aspects on the same dataset. We measure the processing time of each transaction to evaluate the comparison. The results have shown that Redis has better runtime performance for insert, delete, update transaction under a specific condition or complex queries. MariaDB still is good for some conditions especially when we have a small data. Our study can help to choose a database that will be suitable for the real world applications because relational databases and nosql databases have different strengths and weakness.

With the rapid growth and use of social networks, the appearance of Internet technology and the advent of the cloud computing a need for new tools and algorithms is appeared to handle the challenges of the big-data. One of the key advances in resolving the big-data challenges is to introduce scalable storage systems. nosql databases are considered as efficient big data storage management systems that provide horizontal scalability. To ensure scalability of the system, data partitioning strategies must be implemented in these databases. In this paper, an Adaptive Rendezvous Hashing Partitioning Module (ARHPM) is proposed for Cassandra nosql databases. The main goal of this module is to partition the data in Cassandra using rendezvous hashing with proposing a Load Balancing based Rendezvous Hashing (LBRH) algorithm for guaranteeing the load balancing in the partitioning process. To evaluate the proposed module, Cassandra is modified by embedding the APRHM partitioning module in it and a number of experiments are conducted to validate the load balancing of the proposed module by using the Yahoo Cloud Serving Benchmark.

The past few years have witnessed an exponential growth in the volume of data on digital forensics leading to big data issues. Digital forensics data is complex and heterogeneous in that it can be structured, unstructured and semi-structured. Traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS) typically expose a query interface based on SQL (Structured Query Language). However, the RDBMS are mainly employed for management of structured data and hard to scale out to the ever growing size of data sets. This paper reviews the features of nosql (Not Only SQL) database technologies as an alternative to RDBMS for management of Big Data. It evaluates the performance of a RDBMS (i.e. MySQL) in comparison with two nosql database systems (i.e. MongoDB and Riak).

Due to the popularity of big data applications, such as social networking, e-commerce, etc., companies need to quickly access huge amounts of data. Under such conditions, a relational database (RDB) cannot meet the demand, and more and more companies decide to switch to nosql database to maintain competitiveness. It's necessary to convert data from an RDB to a nosql database for the companies that have a lot of operation data in an RDB. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm to explore how to convert the schema of RDB into the ones of Wide Column Store DB (WCSDB), and how to import actual data from an RDB into a WCSDB.

A Tokamak device consists of numerous control systems, which need to be integrated. CODAC (Control, Data Access and Communication) system requires the configuration settings of these control systems to carry out the integration smoothly. SDD (Self-description data) is designed to describe the static configuration of control systems. ITER CODAC group has released an SDD software package for control system designers to manage the static configuration, but it is specific for ITER plant control systems. Following the idea of ITER SDD, we developed a flexible and scalable SDD framework to develop SDD software for J-TEXT and other sophisticated devices. The SDD framework describes the configuration settings of various control systems, including physical and logical elements and their relation information, in SDD models which are classified into Components and Connections. The framework is composed of three layers: the MongoDB database, an open-source, dynamic schema, nosql (Not Only SQL) database;the SDD service, which maps SDD models to MongoDB and handles the transaction and business logic;the SDD applications, which can be used to create and maintain SDD information, and generate various kinds of output using the stored SDD information. The real world is mostly a connected data and better be modeled as graph models. Therefore, graph databases are also gaining much attention. To get some advantages of graph models, a huge volume of data in relational models need be converted to graph models. In this paper, we focus on mapping and converting without semantic loss. This approach studies the semantic abstraction of the relational model through its link structure. We summarize that the graph model which is close to the real world is a directed property hypergraph (digraph included). Our approach keeps the semantic abstractions of the real world in the graph model. We conducted some experiments to compare the performances between the naive graph model approach and a directed property hypergraph. We obtained that the query execution time of directed property hypergraph surpasses the naive graph model particularly for rather complex queries.

Recent development of semantic web has opened new research to design search engines which organize and manage semantic data. The core of a search engine is the indexing system which consists of two main parts: data storage and data retrieval. With the increasing amount of semantic data, the most important goal expected from an indexing system is the ability to store large amount of data and retrieve them as fast as possible. In other words, having a scalable indexing system is one of the major challenges in semantic search engines. In this paper, a scalable method is presented to index the RDF data which utilizes HBase database, a nosql database management system, as its underlying data storage. HBase provides random access to massive data on the distributed framework of Hadoop, therefore, it can be a proper option for the management of the massive data. Further, due to the importance and popularity of the entity-based queries, a new schema based on a clustering algorithm is designed to effectively respond to this type of queries. The experimental evaluation shows that the proposed indexing system is effective in terms of improving scalability and retrieval of RDF data.

In this work, we introduce a novel method for entity resolution author disambiguation in bibliographic networks. Such a method is based on a 2-steps network traversal using topological similarity measures for rating candidate nodes. Topological similarity is widely used in the Link Prediction application domain to assess the likelihood of an unknown link. A similarity function can be a good approximation for equality, therefore can be used to disambiguate, basing on the hypothesis that authors with many common co-authors are similar. Our method has experimented on a graph-based representation of the public DBLP Computer Science database. The results obtained are extremely encouraging regarding Precision, Accuracy, and Specificity. Further good aspects are the locality of the method for disambiguation assessment which avoids the need to know the global network, and the exploitation of only a few data, e.g. author name and paper title (i.e., co-authorship data).
