In multiple-input single-output (MISO) wireless power transfer (WPT) via magnetic resonant coupling, multiple transmitters are deployed to enhance the efficiency of power transfer to a single receiver by jointly adapting their source currents/voltages so as to constructively combine the induced magnetic fields at the receiver, a technique known as magnetic beamforming. In practice, since the transmitters (power chargers) are usually at fixed locations and the receiver (e.g., mobile phone) is desired to be freely located in a target region for wireless charging, its received power can fluctuate significantly over locations even with adaptive magnetic beamforming applied. To achieve uniform power coverage, the transmitters need to be optimally placed in the region such that a minimum charging power can be achieved for the receiver regardless of its location, which motivates this paper. First, we derive the optimal magnetic beamforming solution in closed form for a distributed MISO WPT system with fixed locations of the transmitters and receiver to maximize the deliverable power to the receiver subject to a given sum-power constraint at all transmitters. By applying adaptive magnetic beamforming based on this optimal solution, we then jointly optimize the locations of all transmitters to maximize the minimum power deliverable to the receiver over a given one-dimensional (1D) region. Although the formulated problem is nonconvex, we propose an iterative algorithm for solving it efficiently. Extensive simulation results are provided that show the significant performance gains by the proposed design with optimized transmitter locations and magnetic beamforming as compared to other benchmark schemes with non-adaptive and/or heuristic transmitter current allocation and node placement. Last, we extend the node placement problem to the case of 2D region, and propose efficient designs for this case.

The applications of wireless power transfer technology to wireless communications can help build a wireless powered communication network (WPCN) with more reliable and sustainable power supply compared to the conventional battery-powered network. However, due to the fundamental differences in wireless information and power transmissions, many important aspects of conventional battery-powered wireless communication networks need to be redesigned for efficient operations of WPCNs. In this paper, we study the placement optimization of energy and information access points in WPCNs, where the wireless devices (WDs) harvest the radio frequency energy transferred by dedicated energy nodes (ENs) in the downlink, and use the harvested energy to transmit data to information access points (APs) in the uplink. In particular, we are interested in minimizing the network deployment cost with minimum number of ENs and APs by optimizing their locations, while satisfying the energy harvesting and communication performance requirements of the WDs. Specifically, we first study the minimum-cost placement problem when the ENs and APs are separately located, where an alternating optimization method is proposed to jointly optimize the locations of ENs and APs. Then, we study the placement optimization when each pair of EN and AP is colocated and integrated as a hybrid access point, and propose an efficient algorithm to solve this problem. Simulation results show that the proposed methods can effectively reduce the network deployment cost and yet guarantee the given performance requirements, which is a key consideration in future applications of WPCNs.

The WiMedia specifications for high data rate ultra-wideband communication is an emerging protocol with its first products available on the market. One use case is wireless networking based on the Internet Protocol. Conference rooms or offices can be equipped with access points to provide high speed Internet access. Our intention is to establish WiMedia wireless networks in public transportation vehicles, such as aircrafts, trains or buses to reduce costs and enable flexible cabin architecture. Wireless resource planning for node placement and resource allocation is of great interest to achieve high efficiency. Existing resource management algorithms, many have been proposed for the IEEE 802.11 protocol families, can not be applied to our networks, due to the unique MAC protocol of WiMedia specifications, which require different planning approaches. In this paper a resource management approach for this new networks is presented. It uses integer linear programming to identify the optimal placement of access points and the channel allocation in an integrated model. Specific conditions, mainly the beacon group size and extended beacon group size of the network nodes are taken into account, according to the standard. The algorithm was implemented and tested to verify correctness in critical scenarios.

Optimum regular logical topology for wavelength routed WDM networks

Several regular topologies have been proposed to be used as the logical topology for WDM networks. These topologies are usually evaluated and compared based on the metrics related to network performance. It can be simply shown that this is generally not sufficient since better network performance can be achieved by increasing more network facilities. However, doing this eventually increases the network cost. Thus, the comparison of topologies must be performed by using an evaluation function that includes both the network performance metric and the network cost. In this paper, we propose a model to find the optimum regular logical topology for wavelength routed WDM networks. ShuffleNet, de Bruijn graph, hypercube, Manhattan Street Network, and GEMNet are the five well-known and commonly used regular topologies compared in this paper. By solving the two subproblems on node placement optimization, and routing and wavelength assignment, we obtain the evaluation function used in the topology comparison. Numerical results show that GEMNet is the optimum logical topology for the wavelength routed WDM networks, where it can take one of the three forms of ShuffleNet, de Bruijn graph, and its own configurations.
