HIV Testing and PrEP Use Among Trans and/or non-binary Participants in the TASG Study, a Participatory Study in Germany

HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are recommended in Germany for individuals at increased HIV risk. However, data on HIV testing, PrEP use, and PrEP knowledge among trans and non-binary people are limited. We analysed data from the 'Sexuelle Gesundheit in trans und nicht-bin & auml;ren Communitys' (TASG) study, a participatory study on HIV/STI and sexual health among trans and non-binary people in Germany. The study was designed, promoted, and analysed with active involvement of community members. Participants were invited to complete an anonymous online survey between 1 March and 1 July 2022. The outcomes included HIV testing within the last 5 years, PrEP use, and PrEP-specific knowledge. Predictors for HIV testing were identified using a bootstrap stepwise selection procedure. Among 2468 HIV-negative participants with information on potential HIV risks, 21.5% had potential needs for HIV testing and PrEP. Of these, only 44.3% (208/470, missing: 60) reported testing for HIV within the last 5 years. Older participants, those living in larger cities, and those with higher education levels were more likely to have tested for HIV. Additionally, only 8.3% (38/459, missing: 71) reported ever using PrEP. Among 451 participants with potential PrEP needs (missing: 79), only 57.4% knew at least one of three key PrEP-related facts at the time of the survey. Our findings highlight substantial gaps in HIV testing and prevention among trans and non-binary individuals in Germany with potential needs for these services. Reducing barriers to testing and prevention is essential to enable broader access to these critical services.

Helping to destigmatise the use of period products for trans, masculine presenting, non-binary and gender diverse (TMNG) consumers through an inclusive communication design framework

This study aimed to understand the experiences that trans, masculine presenting, non-binary and gender diverse (TMNG) people who menstruate have with period product packaging and marketing, and identified opportunities for improvement through an inclusive communication design framework. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with nine TMNG consumers, allies and advocates. These revealed positive and negative experiences with the current design of period product packaging and marketing throughout the entire 'user journey', including purchasing, use and disposal. A thematic analysis of the interviews confirmed that problems exist with the lack of representation through imagery and language on period product packaging and marketing. The resulting three themes were engaged with to develop an inclusive communication design framework that included: the need for an improvement in the physical experience of periods;the need for improved mental health and emotional relationship to periods;and the need for the consideration of broader social issues such as sustainability and accessibility in relation to period product packaging and marketing.

"It Was Oddly Cathartic and Just Good - Freeing": An Adaptation of a Cognitive Restructuring Task for non-binary People Experiencing Sexual Objectification

The present study uses action research and critical trans theory frameworks to adapt a cognitive restructuring task from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to assist non-binary people in minimizing internalization from sexual objectification experiences (SOEs). Nine non-binary participants completed 3-5 process charts each (32 total) documenting their experiences with SOEs. Participants also completed interviews about their experience with the process chart. Findings explored the nine individual categories of the process chart and the experiences of completing the process charts, highlighting the power participants reclaimed by interrogating objectifying sentiments and managing their environments in the wake of SOEs. We discuss research and clinical implications, such as utilizing our study's process chart to better support non-binary and other marginalized peoples as they navigate objectification and dehumanization.

Bleeding beyond binaries: a critical interpretive review of trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming experiences with menstruation

While some barriers for managing menstruation have been mitigated for cisgender women, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people still struggle to navigate menstruation in a gendered society. With an increasing number of young people identifying outside of the gender binary, there is an immediate need to identify and address the barriers to managing menstruation. This review sets out to explore how trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people experience and navigate menstruation. Using critical interpretive synthesis methodology, nine pieces of literature including peer-reviewed journal articles, graduate theses, a book chapter, and a conference poster presentation were reviewed using thematic analysis. Four primary themes were identified: (1) menstruation is strongly gendered;(2) there exists inadequate trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming education and healthcare training;(3) the gendering of public toilets/washrooms poses a barrier to the management of menstruation;and (4) there exists a lack of diverse participants and attention to intersectional menstruation concerns. A set of recommendations, specific to a variety of stakeholders is provided, and implications for future research are discussed.

Contextualising Experiences of Co-Occurring Mental Ill-Health and Substance Use Among Trans, non-binary, and Gender Diverse Young People: Implications for Tailored Harm Reduction Approaches

Though significant research highlights higher rates of mental ill-health and substance use among trans, non-binary and gender diverse (henceforth 'trans') young people, little research has considered patterns, contextual characteristics, and correlates of co-occurring experiences of mental ill-health and substance use among trans young people. Using data from the Trans Pathways study, we used prevalence ratios and age- and gender-adjusted logistic regression models to examine prevalence and differences of co-occurring substance use (past six-month cigarette use, alcohol use, and other drug use) and contextual characteristics of substance use (past six-month solitary alcohol and/or drug use, substance use for coping) by mental ill-health (depression disorder, anxiety disorder, past 12-month self-harm thoughts and behaviours, suicidal thoughts, planning, and attempt/s). Age- and gender-adjusted models assessed associations between co-occurring depressive and anxiety disorders and recent cigarette, alcohol, and other drug use (six co-occurring items total) and 18 interpersonal stressors. Significantly increased odds of smoking or recent use of cannabis or sedatives was observed among trans young people reporting depressive disorder, anxiety disorder (aORs ranging 1.8-3.1). Trans young people who reported recent smoking or use of cannabis, inhalants, or sedatives, had 40% to 80% reduced odds of past 12-month self-harm thoughts, self-harm behaviours, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempt/s (aORs ranging 0.2-0.6). On the other hand, solitary alcohol and/or other drug use and substance use for coping was significantly associated with increased odds of all mental ill-health outcomes. Issues with school, secure housing, and intimate partner abuse were the most robust correlates of co-occurring mental ill-health and substance use. "It wasn't the priority": non-binary Children Experiences and Professional Discourse on Public Service Care During the First Wave of COVID-19

IntroductionThe lockdown associated with COVID-19 has had a different impact on LGBTI people compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers, with an even greater impact on children and youth. This study aims to identify the level of satisfaction amongst non-binary children with the attention received from the main social actors during the first wave of the pandemic in Spain, analyse the role of key people, levels of trust, and children's main concerns and needs. Furthermore, it also aims to understand professional responses to the challenges presented by non-binary children and young people during the first wave of the *** mixed design has been applied to the collection of quantitative and qualitative data during 2022. A survey of children aged 9 to 17 (n = 1216, in which there were 32 non-binary children) as well as 30 interviews with professionals in the sector were used during the academic year *** results of the study show how non-binary children and young people have significantly less satisfaction than their peers who identified as a boy or a girl with respect to the care received, how gender identity played a fundamental role in their experiences during the lockdown and how professional responses have not had the proper tools to adequately address the challenges that non-binary children and young people posed to services and *** such as pandemics reproduced and intensified patterns of invisibility, discrimination and social exclusion in most walks of life for children who are outside of the dominant sexual and gender *** ImplicationsThis piece of work allows us to highlight the needs of non-binary children and young people as well as those of psychosocial care professionals in order to support sexual and gender diversity in post-pandemic conditions.

Minority Stress and Mental Health of Indian non-binary Individuals

This study investigated how Indian non-binary individuals experience minority stress and its impact on mental health, with a focus on the role of social support and coping mechanisms. Semi-structured interviews with eight non-binary participants aged 18–23 from Bengaluru revealed four main themes: societal treatment, self-identity, minority stress and mental health, and social support. Findings indicate that experiences with discrimination, misgendering, gender dysphoria, and identity concealment contribute to negative mental health outcomes. However, social support and effective coping strategies were found to positively influence mental health by affirming identity. These results suggest potential avenues for developing targeted interventions and support systems to improve mental health among non-binary individuals. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Gender identity and activity limitations: A national study on transgender and non-binary Canadians

Introduction: Activity limitations among transgender and non-binary individuals remain largely unexplored using population-based samples. This study examines the risk of activity limitations across different gender identities in Canada. Method: Using data from the 2021 Canadian long-form Census, logistic regressions estimated the adjusted odds of reporting activity limitations (seeing, hearing, mobility/dexterity, mental, cognitive, and other) across gender identities. Results: non-binary individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB) had the highest predicted probability of reporting any activity limitations (76.13 %), followed by non-binary individuals assigned male at birth (AMAB) at 61.56 %, transgender men (44.71 %), and transgender women (34.41 %). Cisgender men (19.31 %) and cisgender women (21.98 %) had the lowest probabilities. Mental limitations showed the largest disparity, with 39.4 % of non-binary AFAB individuals affected, compared to 4.9 % of cisgender men. These findings highlight significant disparities in activity limitations across gender identities. Conclusion: non-binary and transgender individuals are most at risk for activity limitations. These findings underscore the need for targeted policies to address challenges faced by gender-diverse populations. Future research should investigate the mechanisms behind these disparities. Healthcare policies must prioritize culturally competent, transgender-inclusive care to reduce disparities in activity limitations.

Sports Injuries in Female and non-binary Athletes: A Systematic Review

Purpose of ReviewThe main purpose of this review was to summarize the current evidence on treatment and outcomes of sports injuries requiring surgical intervention in female and non-binary athletes and identify key gaps in the related literature concerning sports injuries requiring surgical intervention to guide future *** FindingsOf the 59 included studies, all focused on biological sex or sex-based differences, while none of the studies discussed gender or the inclusion of non-binary and transgender individuals. Most of the studies (47/59, 80%) focused on ACL reconstruction (37%), hip arthroscopy (27%) or rotator cuff repair (15%). Important sex-based differences were seen with these injuries including differences in fears regarding recovery after ACL injury and pre- and post-operative pain scores following rotator cuff *** increasing recognition of the role of biologic sex in the treatment and outcomes of sports injuries, very little is known about the impact of gender in sports injuries. Previous sociological literature suggests that gender may play an important role in one's athletic experience, and thus their injury experience. With most of the included studies focused on only three injury types, the experiences of female and non-binary athletes with all other sports injuries are poorly characterized. The lack of gender-inclusive sports injuries research means that the complete experiences of female, non-binary and transgender athletes are not comprehensively captured in the current literature. Future research should aim to characterize the effect of gender on the treatment and outcomes on all sport-related injuries, with the goal of providing inclusive surgical care for all athletes.

We study an energy formulation for non-binary discrete tomography and introduce a non-convex coupling term in order to combine discrete constraints with a continuous reconstruction method based on total variation regularization. The optimization is carried out by a generalized forward-backward splitting algorithm for non-convex functions, which exploits the problem structure and is guaranteed to globally converge to a local optimum. A detailed numerical evaluation on standard test-datasets demonstrates that the proposed algorithm returns more accurate reconstructions from a few number of projection angles than competing methods.
