Strategies for surveying platform workers: lessons from a Belgian case study

Job quality among platform workers has been high on labour market researchers’ agendas. Nevertheless, many report difficulties in collecting data for this group of workers. Platform workers meet many of the criteria of hard-to-survey populations. The aim of this paper is to evaluate whether purposive, non-probability sampling can provide a good strategy for collecting information on the job quality of platform workers through an internet survey (SEAD Platform Survey). The study on which this paper is based, employed different strategies by dividing platform workers into categories based on type of activity. sampling techniques were adapted to each category and included referral, social media advertisements, (virtual) convenience sampling and a web panel. Despite the cost and labor intensity of these non-probability sampling techniques, a sizeable sample (N = 490) of platform workers was collected. Moreover, the SEAD Platform Survey showed very similar characteristics to previous probability samples within the study population (LFS Module platform work, COLLEEM II, and the ETUI IPWS). Researchers focusing on (other) hard-to-survey (worker) populations can learn from this endeavor, showing that when there is little to no opportunity for probability sampling, purposive, non-probability sampling techniques can offer a good alternative to reach a rich, statistical resource. © The Author(s) 2024.

This article reconceptualizes sampling in social research. It is argued that three inter-related a priori assumptions limit on the possibility of sample design, namely: (a) the ontology of the case, (b) the epistemological assumptions underpinning what properties are necessary to know the case and (c) the logistics involved in the process of casing' the case. In considering sampling in this way, not only are key criteria commonly used to gauge the validity of sample problematized, but a genuine epistemological bridge between probability and non-probability sample designs is also forged.

Evaluating the quality of HIV epidemiologic evidence for populations in the absence of a reliable sampling frame: a modified quality assessment tool

Background: sampling frames rarely exist for key populations at highest risk for HIV, such as sex workers, men who have sex with men, people who use drugs, and transgender populations. Without reliable sampling frames, most data collection relies on non-probability sampling approaches including networkbased methods (e.g. respondent driven sampling) and venue-based methods (e.g. time-location sampling). Quality of implementation and reporting of these studies is highly variable, making wide-ranging estimates often difficult to compare. Here, a modified quality assessment tool, *** Quality Assessment Tool for Data Generated through non-probability sampling (GHQAT), was developed to evaluate the quality of HIV epidemiologic evidence generated using non-probability methods. Methods: The GHQAT assesses three main domains: study design, study implementation, and indicatorspecific criteria(prevalence, incidence, HIV continuum of care, and population size estimates). The study design domain focuses primarily on the specification of the target and study populations. The study implementation domain is concerned with sampling implementation. Each indicator-specific section contains items relevant to that specific indicator. A random subset of 50 studies from a larger systematic review on epidemiologic data related to HIV and key populations was generated and reviewed using the GHQAT by two independent reviewers. Inter-rater reliability was assessed by calculating intraclass correlation coefficients for the scores assigned to study design, study implementation and each of the indicator-specific criteria. Agreement was categorized as poor(0.00-0.50), fair(0.51-0.70), and good(0.711.00). The distribution of good, fair, and poor scores for each section was described. Results: Overall, agreement between the two independent reviewers was good(ICC >0.7). Agreement was best for the section evaluating the HIV continuum of care(ICC = 0.96). Traditional surveys face increasing challenges due to rising non-response rates and the diminishing resources available to survey organizations. A recently proposed solution involves the combination of non-probability sample surveys (often cheaper) with probability sample surveys (more expensive), using the latter as a reference to weight the former. Considering a special case in which a single survey was designed and carried out by simultaneously using the two sampling approaches within a single field operation, this paper compared the use of quasi-randomization and sample matching methods to assign weights to the non-probability part of the sample. The quasi-randomization method provided the closest point estimates and smaller standard errors (on average) when compared to the benchmark estimates. © 2022 - IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Case studies in bias reduction and inference for electronic health record data with selection bias and phenotype misclassification

Electronic health records (EHR) are not designed for population-based research, but they provide easy and quick access to longitudinal health information for a large number of individuals. Many statistical methods have been proposed to account for selection bias, missing data, phenotyping errors, or other problems that arise in EHR data analysis. However, addressing multiple sources of bias simultaneously is challenging. We developed a methodological framework (R package, SAMBA) for jointly handling both selection bias and phenotype misclassification in the EHR setting that leverages external data sources. These methods assume factors related to selection and misclassification are fully observed, but these factors may be poorly understood and partially observed in practice. As a follow-up to the methodological work, we demonstrate how to apply these methods for two real-world case studies, and we evaluate their performance. In both examples, we use individual patient-level data collected through the University of Michigan Health System and various external population-based data sources. In case study (a), we explore the impact of these methods on estimated associations between gender and cancer diagnosis. In case study (b), we compare corrected associations between previously identified genetic loci and age-related macular degeneration with gold standard external summary estimates. These case studies illustrate how to utilize diverse auxiliary information to achieve less biased inference in EHR-based research.

Beyond the existence proof: ontological conditions, epistemological implications, and in-depth interview research

In-depth interviewing is a promising method. Alas, traditional in-depth interview sample designs prohibit generalizing. Yet, after acknowledging this limitation, in-depth interview studies generalize anyway. Generalization appears unavoidable;thus, sample design must be grounded in plausible ontological and epistemological assumptions that enable generalization. Many in-depth interviewers reject such designs. The paper demonstrates that traditional sampling for in-depth interview studies is indefensible given plausible ontological conditions, and engages the epistemological claims that purportedly justify traditional sampling. The paper finds that the promise of in-depth interviewing will go unrealized unless interviewers adopt ontologically plausible sample designs. Otherwise, in-depth interviewing can only provide existence proofs, at best.

Improving transportability of randomized controlled trial inference using robust predictionmethods

Randomized trials have been the gold standard for assessing causal effects since their introduction by Fisher in the 1920s, since they can eliminate both observed and unobserved confounding. Estimates of causal effects at the population level from randomized controlled trials can still be biased if there are both effect modification and systematic differences between the trial sample and the ultimate population of inference with respect to these modifiers. Recent advances in the survey statistics literature to improve inference in nonprobability samples by using information from probability samples can provide an avenue for improving population causal inference in randomized controlled trials when relevant probability samples of the patient population are available. We review some recent work in "transporting" causal effect estimates from trials to populations, focusing on the setting where there is a "benchmark" or population-representative sample along with the RCT sample. We then propose estimators using either inverse probability weighting (IPWT) or prediction that can accommodate unequal probability of selection in the "benchmark" or population, and use Bayesian additive regression trees for both inverse probability of treatment weighting and prediction estimation that do not require specification of functional form or interaction. We also consider how the assumption of ignorability may be assessed from observed data and propose a sensitivity analysis under the failure of this assumption. We compare our proposed approach with existing methods in simulation and apply these alternative approaches to a study of pulmonary artery catheterization in critically ill patients. We also suggest next steps for future work.

is a process of converting data into its visual form as such data patterns can be extracted from the data. Data patterns are knowledge hidden behind the data. However, when data is big, it tends to overlap and clutter on visualization which distorts the data patterns. Data is overly crowded on visualization thus, it has become a challenge to extract knowledge patterns. Besides, big data is costly to visualize because it requires expensive hardware facilities due to its size. Moreover, it is timely to plot the data since it takes time for data to render on visualizations. Due to those reasons, there is a need to reduce the size of big datasets and at the same time maintain the data patterns. There are many methods of data reduction, which are preprocessing operations, dimension reduction, compression, network theory, redundancy elimination, data mining, machine learning, data filtering and sampling techniques. However, the commonly used data reduction technique is sampling technique that derives samples from data populations. Thus, sampling technique is chosen as a study for data reduction in this paper. However, the studies are scattered and are not discussed in a single paper. Consequently, the objective of this paper is to collect them in a single paper for further analysis in order to understand them in great detail. To achieve the objective, three interdisciplinary databases which are ACM Digital Library, IEEE Explore and Science Direct have been selected. From the database, a total of 48 studies have been extracted and they are from the years 2017 to 2021. Other than sampling techniques, this paper also seeks information on big data, data visualization, data clutter, and data reduction.

The use of web questionnaires in second language acquisition and bilingualism research

The present article focuses on data collection through web questionnaires, as opposed to the traditional pen-and-paper method for research in second language acquisition and bilingualism. It is argued that web questionnaires, which have been used quite widely in psychology, have the advantage of reaching out to a larger and more diverse pool of potential participants, which may increase the ecological validity of the resulting database. After considering some issues raised in debates on the strengths and weaknesses of traditional approaches to data collection through questionnaires as opposed to web-based questionnaires, we present two case studies of research designs based on online questionnaires, that is, the bilingualism and emotions questionnaire (Dewaele and Pavlenko, 2001/03) and the feelings questionnaire (Wilson, 2008). We reflect on the issue of participant self-selection and conclude that the potential benefits of web-based questionnaires can outweigh their limitations.
