A recourse-based nonlinear programming model for stream water quality management

A recourse-based nonlinear programming (RBNP) method is developed for stream water quality management under uncertainty. It can not only reflect uncertainties expressed as interval values and probability distributions but also address nonlinearity in the objective function. A 0-1 piecewise linearization approach and an interactive algorithm are advanced for solving the RBNP model. The RBNP is applied to a case of planning stream water quality management. The RBNP modeling system can provide an effective linkage between environmental regulations and economic implications expressed as penalties or opportunity losses caused by improper policies. The solutions can be used for generating a variety of alternatives under different combinations of pre-regulated targets, which are also associated with different water-quality-violation risk levels and varied potential economic penalty or loss values.

In this paper, the goal is to incorporate qualitative criteria in addition to quantitative criteria to facility layout design (FLD) problem. To this end, we present an integrated methodology based on the synthetic value of fuzzy judgments and nonlinear programming (SVFJ-NLP). The facility layout patterns (FLPs) together with their performance measures of total cost of material handling are generated by a computer-aided layout-design tool, CRAFT. Also, the performance measures of second quantitative criterion (construction cost of width walls) are calculated by appraising these FLPs. The SVFJ is then applied to collect the performance measures related to qualitative criteria and finally, a non-linear programming (NLP) model is proposed to solve the FLD. All vital operations of a supply chain network (SCN) are inherently affected by uncertainties and risks in the economic environment. In this study, we extend an existing SCN model by elaborating on stochastic price and demand, and integrating economic uncertainty. Financial performance and credit solvency are of utmost importance when analysing the financial status of an SCN. Each of these components focuses on a different aspect of investment attractiveness under various economic conditions, and in turn, facilitates access to capital for the companies involved. We extend the SCN model with financial performance optimisation approach to a novel model to include the trade-offs between two objective functions: (1) the total equity as the financial performance of the SC, and (2) the Altman's Z-score as the credit solvency factor of the company. The model ascertains the future profitability, leverage, and liquidity of the SC by determining the optimal levels of production and inventory in each facility of the new network design. We introduce a weighted sum method and a novel genetic algorithm (GA) solution approach to solve the resultant bi-objective mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. Single machine scheduling considering time value of money

Under the background of Industry 4.0, this paper studies the single machine scheduling problem by taking into account the time value of money and tardiness penalty. We establish a mixed integer nonlinear programming model for the considered problem, and then convert the above model into a novel integer linear programming model. Regarding the factor of time value of money, we mainly aim to find an optimal or near optimal processing sequence of the jobs such that the total future value of profits is maximized. We employ CPLEX to output optimal solutions for small-size instances. For large-size instances, we propose the genetic algorithm to produce near optimal solutions. © 2019, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Design of a renewable energy system with battery and power-to-methanol unit

An energy storage system consisting of a battery and a power-to-methanol (PtM) unit was investigated to develop an energy storage system for renewable energy systems. A nonlinear programming model was established to optimize the energy storage system. The optimal installation capacities of the battery and power-to-methanol units were determined to minimize the cost of the energy system. The cost from a renewable energy system was assessed for four configurations, with or without energy storage units, of the battery and the power-to-methanol unit. The proposed model was applied to the modified electricity supply and demand based on published data. The results show that value-adding units, such as PtM, need be included to build a stable renewable energy system. This work will significantly contribute to the advancement of electricity supply and demand management and to the establishment of a nationwide policy for renewable energy storage.

Parallel Computing Technologies for Solving Optimization Problems of Geometric Design

This paper describes the application of parallel computing technologies in systems with shared and distributed memory for solving optimization problems of geometric design. The first technology is based on the maximin properties of phi-functions for composite objects, and the second technology uses the multistart strategy and methods for minimizing nonsmooth functions. This allowed to several times reduce time expenditures for searching for locally optimum placements of 2D and 3D objects and to obtain better results as for the objective function value.

Cooperative game theory approach for multi-objective home energy management with renewable energy integration

This study proposes a mathematical model of an intelligent multi-objective home energy management (HEM) scheme with the integration of small-scale renewable energy sources. The main aim of the proposed model is to handle the residential load demand in a smart way to minimise both the consumer's energy bill and the system peak demand simultaneously. To generate the best compromise solution of the proposed multi-objective problem, a cooperative game theory approach is used in this study on the basis of super-criterion and a Pareto optimal solution concept. In the cooperative game process, each HEM objective is assigned as a player and every player tries to maximise their own payoff. Bargaining model in the form of super criterion is considered in this game approach. Finally, all players can get win-win nature with collective negotiations. Generally, HEM method deals with various controllable devices having distinct operating characteristics. Because of this, the proposed HEM problem is modelled as a mixed-integer problem. Consequently, a mixed-integer non-linear programming is applied in this game process to maximise the super-criterion. To show the effectiveness of the proposed model, different case studies and various scenarios are carried out.

Coordinated operation strategies for natural gas and power systems in presence of gas-related flexibilities

A detailed investigation of the interaction between natural gas and power systems is necessary, due to the increasing interdependency of these vectors, especially in the context of renewable generations integration growth into the grid. In this study, an outer approximation with an equality relaxation decomposition method is proposed to solve a mixed-integer non-linear problem representing the operation of coupled natural gas and power systems. The proposed coupled modelling of natural gas and power systems is compared to decoupled operational modelling. It is demonstrated that operating gas and electricity as a coupled system resulted in about 7% of operational cost savings. In addition, the value of gas-related flexibility options, including flexible gas compressors, flexible gas generation plants, and gas interconnections, to the operation of natural gas and power systems is quantified for a 2030 GB energy system. It is shown that if the natural gas and power systems are flexible enough, the operation of the systems in the decoupled approach is almost the same as the coupled model and therefore there is no need to reform the current energy market framework to make the systems fully coupled.

Global and local convergence of a class of penalty-free-type methods for nonlinear programming

We present a class of trust region algorithms without using a penalty function or a filter for nonlinear inequality constrained optimization and analyze their global and local convergence. In each iteration, the algorithms reduce the value of objective function or the. measure of constraints violation according to the relationship between optimality and feasibility. A sequence of steps focused on improving optimality is referred to as an f-loop, while some restoration phase focuses on improving feasibility and is called an h-loop. In an f-loop, the algorithms compute trial step by solving a classic QP subproblem rather than using composite-step strategy. Global convergence is ensured by requiring the constraints violation of each iteration not to exceed an progressively tighter bound on constraints violation. By using a second order correction strategy based on active set identification technique. Marato's effect is avoided and fast local convergence is shown. Joint node selection, flow routing, and cell coverage optimisation for network sum-rate maximisation in wireless sensor networks

In this study, the problems of joint node selection, flow routing, and cell coverage optimisation in energy-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are considered. Due to the energy constraints on network nodes, maximising network sum-rate under target network lifetime, flow routing, cell coverage, and minimum rate constraints is of paramount importance in WSNs. To this end, a mixed-integer non-linear programming problem is formulated, where the aim is to optimally select which network nodes to act as sensors or relays while ensuring connectivity to the fusion centre optimised network flows, and full network coverage. The formulated problem happens to be NP-hard (i.e. computationally prohibitive). In turn, a solution procedure based on the branch and bound with the reformulation-linearisation technique (BB-RLT) is devised to provide a $\lpar 1 - {\rm \epsilon }\rpar $(1-epsilon)-optimal solution to the formulated problem. Simulation results are presented to validate the efficacy of the devised BB-RLT solution procedure. This work provides significant theoretical results on network sum-rate maximisation for WSNs under a variety of practical constraints.
