This paper intends to introduce the fundamental principles behind the architecture of the Intel iAPX432 micromainframe. After a short historical overview, describing typical problems in existing computer systems, we introduce the object oriented architecture of the iAPX432. This architecture provides mechanisms for an efficient implementation of high level programming languages, process parallelism or concurrency, process communication and transparent multiprocessor systems. After this introduction, we discuss briefly the programming language Ada, and the correspondence between some Ada constructs and 432 objects. In August 1981, BTM Lab became the first European beta site for the iAPX432 micromainframe. This fact gave us the opportunity to start very soon with a number of practical experiments using this new processor. An overview indicates some typical exercises with the 432 cross development system. These exercises gave us a true understanding of the 432 architecture and the Ada language. The last part of the paper is devoted to a discussion on the obtained results and considerations for the future.

The assessment process in engineering courses is an arduous task. It requires a lot of effort from teachers. In Mathematics and Physics courses, there are additional issues related to the evaluation of questions with numerical and symbolic answers. In this project, an on-line dynamic assessment system called TecEval was developed. It is a web platform that can be accessed via desktop and mobile browsers. This system enables the management of mathematical equations, and it can randomize the order of the questions and the values of the coefficients in them within certain parameters. Consequently, every student will have to answer a different test every time he/she uses the platform. TecEval allows professors to generate dynamic tests for engineering courses, which are graded automatically. TecEval can create tests with 4 types of questions: i) numerical questions, where the answer is a predetermined number, ii) multiple choice questions (including multiple answers), iii) dynamic questions, where the response is based on a equation, and iv) dynamic-equation questions, where the response is a mathematical equation that may contain dynamic variables. During the evaluation process TecEval performed successfully with students and it obtained positive comments from surveys applied to professors.

Recently, technological advances in digital imaging modalities and high-speed networks have enabled physicians to store digital medical images and integrate them with the patient's electronic medical record for fast access by computer. This paper outlines the characteristics and design requirements of an Image Workflow Management System (IWFMS) in a large-scale hospital environment. In this paper, we present an enterprise four-tiered architecture of the image workflow management system for supporting streamlining, automating, and monitoring the flow of the medical images in a large-scale consortium of hospitals known as the Clarian Health system in Indianapolis, Indiana;The first tier presents the Graphic User Interface (GUI) that enables users to view and interact with the workflow engine. The second tier implements the business model that depends on the work requirements within the different units of the hospital system. The third tier implements the business logic and automates tasks that support image flows. The fourth tier is the back-end database tier used to store and retrieve workflow data. The components in each tier have been designed and implemented as a set of CORBA objects that provide seamless integration of the image flows in the Clarian Health System.

Control and monitoring software for data acquisition systems should have an efficient, reliable, and robust design comprising dual redundant communications, fault tolerant behavior, error handling, and recovery features as well as simple deployment and maintainability. The Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) telescope comprises many functionally diverse subsystems. The camera is one of its major subsystems and it is responsible for imaging and event data acquisition. The central camera controller (CCC) manages and coordinates all the actions of the camera subsystems and it collects monitoring data for the MACE operator console. The robustness, efficiency, and reliability of the CCC are vital for conducting successful observations. Prototype software was developed to control the basic functions of the system and the complexity of the software increased as the system evolved over time due to the addition of functionalities. The remote location of the telescope also imposes some constraints on achieving the maximum reachability. Thus, the CCC software was redesigned from scratch to overcome the existing issues and to satisfy the system constraints. The improvement in the overall performance of the system as a result of new design of the software is described in this study. The most important design aspects of the new software are described along with its requirements and advantages. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
