A natural language query interface for databases provides the user friendliness in retrieving the desired information by querying in a native natural language. Up to now, many natural language query interfaces for conventional databases have been developed. However, the field of natural language query interfaces for object-oriented databases which have recently started to emerge as the next-generation databases has become a new research area. This paper describes a processing technique to manipulate natural language representations of path expressions. From the fact that the path expression is one of the key features in the object-oriented data model, a frame based decomposition method is proposed for efficient processing.

Work on object-oriented database and programming technology has resulted in a number of important and powerful concepts and mechanisms, not only essential for modeling and implementing next generation database systems, but also useful for designing and constructing a network of distributed, autonomous databases (e.g. a federated database architecture). By applying the concept of 'object' to database level, many of the associated mechanisms can be adopted and extended naturally, so as to accommodate the desired sharing and exchange of information among databases. The authors describe such an 'object-oriented' approach towards federating a collection of decentralized, heterogeneous databases, and examines several issues that must be addressed within such an environment.< >

An interaction model for object-oriented geographic databases is presented. A browsing technique based on the model is outlined. The approach is uniform for navigating both the intensional and extensional part of the database. The proposed interaction model is flexible and is suitable for satisfying many purposes. It is able to satisfy users interested in getting a general idea about the contents of the database, as well as those with more specific tasks to accomplish. Depending on their requirements, users may control the degree of complexity of the information presented on the screen. Two basic criteria are adopted for browsing the database: logic adjacency and spatial adjacency between objects. Logic adjacency is determined by four conceptual links, while spatial adjacency is related to the two-dimensional (map-based) view of geographic entities.< >

In this paper, an object-oriented (OO) framework for integrating heterogeneous database schemas for data mining is proposed. The framework is constructed on the basis of the attribute equivalence theory. The work is motivated by the observation that current data mining systems are best for knowledge discovery tasks in single databases. However, the rich sources of information provided by an increasingly large number of distributed and heterogeneous databases present an urgent need for effective and efficient mining systems that can operate on multiple databases. In our framework, OO techniques are used. The intention is to take advantage of features offered by the OO methodology. It is shown that they can be utilised effectively in the implementation.

The object-oriented data model is predicted to be the heart of the next generation of database systems. Users want to move from old legacy databases into applying this new technology that provides extensibility and flexibility in maintenance. However, a major limitation on the wide acceptance of object-oriented databases is the amount of time and money invested on existing database applications, which are based on conventional legacy systems. Users do not want to loose the huge amounts of data present in conventional databases. This paper presents a novel approach to transform a given conventional database into an object-oriented database. It is assumed that the necessary characteristics of the conventional database to be re-engineered are known and available. The source of these characteristics might be the data dictionary and/or an expert in the given conventional database. We implemented a system that builds an understanding of a given conventional database by taking these characteristics as input and produces the corresponding object-oriented database as output. The system derives a graph that summarizes the conceptual model. Links in the graph are classified into inheritance links and aggregation links. This classification leads to the class hierarchy. Finally, we handle the migration of data from the conventional database to the constructed object-oriented database.

Presents an approach to query processing in a multidatabase system that uses an object-oriented model to capture the semantics of other data models. The object-oriented model is used to construct a global schema, defining an integrated view of the different schemas in the environment. The model is also used as a self-describing model to build a meta-database for storing information about the global schema. A unique aspect of this work is that the object-oriented model is used to describe the different data models of the multidatabase environment, thereby extending the meta-database with semantic information about the local schemas. Structural mappings between the global schema and each local schema are then easily supported. An object algebra provides a query language for expressing global queries, using the structural mappings to translate object algebra queries into SQL queries over local relational schema The object algebra can be used to directly retrieve temporarily-stored data from the object-oriented database or to transparently retrieve data from local sources using the translation process described in this paper.< >

Interpretation of aerial images is normally carried out by visual interpretation as traditional classification routines are too limited in dealing with the complexity of very high resolution data. Segmentation based classifiers can overcome this limitation by dividing images into homogenous segments and using them as basis for further classification procedures. In this paper this approach is examined in view of its potential to support the update of existing land use data bases. A workflow was developed that allows the classification of high-resolution aerial images, the subsequent comparison with land use data and the assessment of identified changes. Special emphasis is put on the transferability of the procedure in terms of study area as well as image and land use data.

In this paper, a temporal object-oriented approach has been explored for data modeling and management in sequential image databases. "The wood panel deformation measurement and analysis database" is taken as a case study for understanding this sort of complex database application. A generalized temporal object-oriented data model has been presented in which the object-oriented modeling capability supports the integration of data, text and images, timestamps support the sequential images, and methods are used for data processing. A query algebra has been defined for the model. This algebra allows query and data manipulation. The database support for automatic sequential image deformation analysis has also been investigated.
