The current storage models for object-Oriented DataBase (OODB), which organize data as objects according to the object-Oriented Data. Model (OODM), are mainly established on the block storage devices. In this way, the storage manager does not have detailed knowledge of the characteristics of the underlying storage devices, and the storage subsystem does not have the semantic knowledge of the data stored in the block storage devices, so it is very difficult to implement some workload-dependent tasks such as data layout and caching. Furthermore, the storage subsystem of OODB has to organize the objects in the pages, which is not well-suited to the objects storage. In this paper, we present an object-based storage Model (OBSM) for OODB by using the recently-standardized object-based storage Device (OSD) interface. OSD off-loads the storage management into the storage device itself and provides an object interface to data, which brings more intelligence into the storage subsystem. In the first glance at using OBSD in OODB, we explore the methods to map OODM to OBSM including direct mapping, mapping clustering to collection and declustering a large object to a series of sub-objects, and analyze the benefits to the storage subsystem of OODB by using OBSM such as providing storage functionalities offloading, providing objects sharing pool, providing integrative object persistence.

PRS: A Pattern-Directed Replication Scheme for Heterogeneous object-based storage

Data replication is a key technique to achieve high data availability, reliability, and optimized performance in distributed storage systems. In recent years, with emerged new storage devices, heterogeneous object-based storage systems, such as a storage system with a mix of hard disk drives, solid state drives, and other non-volatile memory devices have become increasingly attractive since they combine the merits of different storage devices to deliver better promises. However, existing data replication schemes do not well consider distinct characteristics of heterogeneous storage devices yet, which could lead to suboptimal performance. This article introduces a new data replication scheme called Pattern-directed Replication Scheme (PRS) to achieve efficient data replication for heterogeneous storage systems. Different from traditional schemes, the PRS selectively replicates data objects and distributes replicas to various storage devices based on their characteristics. It aggregates objects that have I/O correlation into object groups by calculating object distance and makes replication for grouped objects according to application's data access pattern identified. In addition, the PRS uses a pseudo random algorithm to optimize replica placement by considering the storage device performance and capacity features. We have evaluated the pattern-directed replication scheme with extensive tests in Sheepdog, a typical object-based storage system. The experimental results confirm that it is a highly efficient replication scheme for heterogeneous storage systems. For instance, the read performance was improved by 105 percent to nearly 10x compared with existing replication schemes.

This paper presents a proposal to embed the file access control into object-based storage devices (OSD) to achieve powerful storage security with rich semantics;and two application prototypes, the OSD-based intrusion detection (ID) and the finer-grained (than the file-level) access control, are implemented to show its feasibility. To embed file access control into storage, one of vital challenges is how to connect a file with its corresponding storage units and its access control rule. In this design, OSD itself can complete the connection-for ID, the one (file) to one (object) relationship is used to link files and their storage objects/access rules together by tie storage. As the relationship is extended to one to more, one file can be divided into several objects in accordance with its access control semantics;then assigning users with different access permissions based on the file's internal structure (which is the meaning of the finer-grained access control) is feasible. In addition, the OSD standard is discussed to extend to define new object attributes for file access control. Both prototypes are built based on the OSD reference implementation provided by Intel. Testing results show that the extra overheads introduced by this design are acceptable.

Load balancing is a key issue in large-scale object-based storage Systems. Many data replication and migration algorithms have been proposed for load balancing in distributed systems. However, the two operations, data replication and migration, are studied separately. An adaptive load balancing algorithm is presented in this paper, which combines replication and migration in a uniform model. Furthermore, this algorithm uses a hybrid load metric which reflects short-term and long-term load status. To solve the online problem with a changing workload, the algorithm employs an adaptive mechanism to keep track of the characteristics of workloads. The simulation results show that the algorithm with object replication and migration can markedly reduce the overall response time.

In recent years, with the emergence of new storage devices, heterogeneous object-based storage system, such as a storage system with the co-existence of hard disk drives and solid state drives, have become increasingly attractive as they combine merits of different storage devices to deliver better promise. However, existing data replication schemes do not place data based on heterogeneous device characteristics as well as considering distinct data access patterns. In this paper, we introduce a novel data replication scheme PRS to achieve efficient data replication for heterogeneous storage systems. Different from traditional schemes, the PRS groups objects according to data access patterns and distributes replicas to heterogeneous devices with their features. It uses a pseudo random algorithm to optimize replica layout by considering storage device performance and capacity. The experimental results confirm that PRS is a highly efficient replication scheme for heterogeneous storage systems.

As a new generation of high-performance distributed storage system, object-based storage system is being developed to support high-performance computing environments. In the petabyte-scale object-based storage system, reasonable data distribution and parameters configuration can improve system performance and availability. To make the system performance evaluation work easier, we propose an approximate parameters analysis method to build performance model. We firstly model the whole storage system's architecture based on closed Fork-Join queue model;using our system architecture model, we then deduce an approximately analytical expression with erasure codes and replicas to predict the storage system's mean response time under various workloads simulating the real-world condition. Finally, a large number of comparison experiments validate our approximately analytical expression of system performance, and proved that our analytic method is appropriate to build performance model for object-based storage system.

Metadata management is an important component in the object-based storage network. Traditional methods can not support the memberships query with multiple attributes and dynamic update function due to complex operations. A Bloom filter is a kind of succinct way to represent a set of objects because it is a simple space-efficient randomized data structure. In this paper, we propose a new architecture to support the representation of objects with multiple attributes based on Bloom filters. The architecture, called Two-level Bloom Filters (TBF), is composed of attribute and object Bloom filters to support the efficient representation and query of objects. The attribute Bloom filter is a series of counter-based arrays. Each array can store one attribute of an object The object Bloom filter captures a verification value of an object, which can reflect the inherent dependency of all attributes for the object. Furthermore, we present the aggregate-based update approach to support the dynamic update operations on the proposed data architecture. Simulation results demonstrate that the new Bloom filter architecture and proposed update schemes are efficient and accurate to realize the operations of objects with multiple attributes in the object-based storage network.

It is very difficult to design an integrated storage solution for distributed remote sensing images to offer high performance network storage services and secure data sharing across platforms using current network storage models such as direct attached storage, network attached storage and storage area network. object-based storage, as new generation network storage technology emerged recently, separates the data path, the control path and the management path, which solves the bottleneck problem of metadata existed in traditional storage models, and has the characteristics of parallel data access, data sharing across platforms, intelligence of storage devices and security of data access. We use the object-based storage in the storage management of remote sensing images to construct an object-based storage model for distributed remote sensing images. In the storage model, remote sensing images are organized as remote sensing objects stored in the object-based storage devices. According to the storage model, we present the architecture of a distributed remote sensing images application system based on object-based storage, and give some test results about the write performance comparison of traditional network storage model and object-based storage model.

The recent decade witnesses the prevalence of hybrid storage systems that offer storage based on diverse storage devices to achieve both cost savings and performance improvements. However, there have been little of studies focusing on the challenging scenario of providing hybrid block storage for Virtual Machines (VMs), which is subject to several stringent requirements such as availability and scalability. To bridge this gap, we designed and implemented a multi-tiered storage system called MOBBS which provides hybrid block storage for VMs on top of object-based storage infrastructure. MOBBS achieves efficient utilization of different storage devices by striping data into partitions and intelligently determining appropriate data placement by monitoring and analyzing real-time workloads. Moveover, leveraging the benefits of object-based storage, several techniques are designed to promise storage provisioning for VMs with high availability and scalability. A Ceph implementation of MOBBS is evaluated using both block and file system workloads. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of MOBBS in utilization of different storage devices.
