Comparison of Two Approaches when Teaching object-orientated programming to Novices

It has been stated several times in the literature that novice students must grasp object-orientated concepts immediately as the fundamental knowledge for programming using Java. Also, that introducing students to programming using the simpler procedural concepts early only compounds the difficulty of teaching object-orientated programming, as the need to always use some aspect of object-based code in Java cannot be avoided. Attempting to disguise this eventually causes frustration and confusion, even for good students. This paper presents the results of a comparison that evaluates, using a pre-test-post-test control group design, two approaches to teaching Java, where one approach uses objects first and the other uses a procedural followed by an objects approach. The results of the empirical study indicate that the students, who were first year engineers, using the objects first approach do indeed gain a better understanding of programming. This finding is supported by information gathered from a debriefing questionnaire, where the objects first approach was rated as easier for acquiring Java programming knowledge and skills.

A computational toolbox for quantum and atomic optics

A collection of routines is described which largely automates the process of generating the quantum mechanical equations of motion for problems involving systems with relatively few degrees of freedom. Their use allows the user to adopt a high-level approach to writing simulation programs which concentrates on the physics of the problem, rather than on the details of the solution. Examples are taken from the fields of quantum and atomic optics, but the toolbox is also useful for problems involving quantum information and in teaching quantum mechanics. The toolbox has been implemented using the Matlab programming language, but the ideas may be applied to any other object-oriented language.

This paper contributes to the discussion on issues related to the formal development of open distributed systems (ODSs). Deficiencies of traditional formal notations in this setting are highlighted. We argue that there is no single formalism exhibiting all the features required to capture properties of ODSs. As a solution, we propose an integrated development framework that involves two notations: the Unified Modeling Language and the Prototype Verification System. We discuss the motivation for the choice of these notations, provide an overview of a CASE tool we have developed to support the proposed framework, and present a case study to demonstrate usability of our approach. In this paper we describe the principles and the design issues of MEDIARAD, a platform-independent user-oriented programming environment for developing imaging applications in Radiology. The development of such system is motivated by the! significant increase, during the last few years, of the demand for computerized medical imaging systems in radiology. This increase is due mainly to the advent of newer imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance or computerized tomography, as well as to the activation of several radiological Screening Programs for early diagnosis of cancer in most western Countries. MEDIARAD should be useful at least to four different types of users:1) physicians and radiologists who are the basic users and simply want a Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system in order to receive help in the diagnostic process;2) Computer Vision researchers and software developers who look for suitable tools to easily and effortless build their own CAD applications;3) computer trained physicians, who might want to interact with the system in order to personalize and improve it, and 4) researchers interested mainly in testing specific algorithms during the development and evaluation stages which lead to building a specific imaging application. MEDIARAD has already been used to build a CAD system for detecting clusters of breast microcalcifications in digitized mammograms.

Multiple Polymorphic Arguments in Single Dispatch object Oriented Languages

Commonly used object-oriented languages like C++, Java and C# are single dispatch languages and do not support multiple polymorphic arguments in message dispatch. In this work, we demonstrate simulation of multimethods in single dispatch languages without any change in the language syntax. For realization of multimethods, we use double dispatching (dispatching on each argument in turn), message dispatching using runtime type information (RTTI) (adding multimethod dispatch routine), and reflection (using metadata). We develop a preprocessor to simulate the RTTI technique. We discuss the issues associated with code-reuse and encapsulating multimethods in single dispatch languages.

This paper describes the design of a modelling and simulation strategy for a laboratory-scale rolling mill in the G2 real-time-software. Also, it briefly presents factors necessary for improving the modelling and simulation from a metallurgical view. The hybrid model base for the mill is designed from a combination of object-Orientation, Rule-based programming, GRAFCET paradigm, equations, and procedures.

MSE: A Methodology for Software Evolution

Every program must continuously evolve, or it will become obsolete. This paper explores a methodology for software evolution within the setting of object-orientated programming. The methodology is based on the top–down propagation of change, and it is remotely related to stepwise refinement. To present the methodology, this paper uses one small example (Gregorian calendar) and one medium-sized example (calendar maintainer). This paper also explores an algorithm for scheduling object classes for update, and introduces a tool, ‘Ripples’, which helps programmers work with the process of software evolution. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
