Composite event support in an active database

An intelligent or active database system is able to provide support to engineering applications, which require both data and rules to be managed. CLOSE is an active database, which integrates an object-oriented database, objectStore with an expert system, CLIPS. Engineering applications require a broad range of composite events, which are combinations of primitive events such as time events, method events and absolute events. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of composite events. Detection of these composite events is supported by a Rule Manager. The data structures used and the mechanism for composite event detection is described. Example applications are also presented in order to highlight the usefulness of composite events. Querying molecular biology databases by integration using multiagents

In this paper, we propose a method for querying heterogeneous molecular biology databases. Since molecular biology data are distributed into multiple databases that represent different biological domains, it is highly desirable to integrate data together with the correlations between the domains. However, since the total amount of such databases is very large and the data contained are frequently updated, it is difficult to maintain the integration of the entire contents of the databases. Thus, we propose a method for dynamic integration based on user demand, which is expressed with an OQL-based query language. By restricting search space according to user demand, the cost of integration can be reduced considerably. Multiple databases also exhibit much heterogeneity, such as semantic mismatching between the database schemas. For example, many databases employ their own independent terminology. For this reason, it is usually required that the task for integrating data based on a user demand should be carried out transitively;first search each database for data that satisfy the demand, then repeatedly retrieve other data that match the previously found data across every database. To cope with this issue, Eve introduce two types of agents;a database agent and a user agent, which reside at each database and at a user, respectively. The integration task is performed by the agents;user agents generate demands for retrieving data based on the previous search results by database agents, and database agents search their databases for data that satisfy the demands received from the user agents. We have developed a prototype system on a network of workstations. The system integrates four databases;GenBank (a DNA nucleotide database), SWISS-PROT, PIR (protein amino-acid sequence databases), and PDB (a protein three-dimensional structure database). The story of the GeoToolKit -: An object-oriented geodatabase kernel system

The quickly increasing number of spatio-temporal applications in fields like environmental monitoring, geology and mobile communication is a new challenge to the development of geodatabases. However, the query functionality of today's geo-information systems is still limited to the thematic attributes of spatial objects and to spatial 2-D objects. This article reports on GeoToolKit, an object-oriented geo-database kernel system developed at Bonn University to support 3-D/4-D geological applications. GeoToolKit is not a GIS-in-a-box package, but rather a library of C + + classes that allows the incorporation of spatio-temporal functionality within an application. Being a component toolkit, it encourages the development and deployment of re-usable and open software. The history, concepts and implementation of GeoToolKit are discussed in detail. Performance tests underline the practicability of the concepts. Extensions to and experiences with GeoToolKit applications like GeoStore, GeoWeb and WellStore are presented. Finally, we give an outlook on our future research introducing GeoToolKit as a 3-D/4-D database component within a network of distributed and mobile geo-information services.

Versant object Technology builds and sells a distributed object database Management System (ODBMS), called VERSANT. This position paper proposes transaction model and version model requirements in support of the kinds of distributed database processing that ODBMS applications require. Transaction model requirements address the long transactions required by many ODBMS applications, as well as the short transactions found in conventional DBMS products. Version model requirements suggest a minimal set of primitives which can be extended to support emerging standards and companies' specific models.

The real challenge in object standardization is to reconcile diverse views of what an object inherently 'is'. This is harder than agreeing on definitions of secondary characteristics such as type and inheritance. User interfaces visualize objects as things in two-dimensional space. Programming thinks of objects as active things that communicate with each other, such as editors and print programs. database leans more toward objects as participants in operations, such as documents and printers. Unifying these, in a kind of wave/particle dualism, is intellectually tempting, but leads to its own anomalies. Such fundamental questions need sorting out before we can converge on object standards spanning these disciplines.

In this paper, we propose a new index structure for object-oriented databases. The main idea of this is a graph structure, called a signature graph, which is constructed over a signature file generated for a class and improves the search of a signature file dramatically. In addition, the signature files (accordingly, the signature graphs) can be organized into a hierarchy according to the nested structure (called the aggregation hierarchy) of classes in an object-oriented database, which leads to another significant improvements.

Microsoft Repository is an object-oriented meta-data management facility that ships in Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft SQL Server. It includes two main components: A repository engine that implements a set of object-oriented interfaces on top of a SQL database system. A developer can use these interfaces to define information models (i.e., schemas) and manipulate instances of the models. The Open Information Model, which is a set of information models that cover object modeling, database modeling, and component reuse. The repository system is designed to meet the persistent storage needs of software tools. Its main technical goals are: Compatibility with Microsoft's Component object Model (COM) architecture Extensibility by customers and independent software vendors, so they can add behavior to objects stored by the repository engine and extend information models provided by Microsoft and others. Flexible and efficient versioning, configuration management, and checkout/checkin to support team-oriented activities. MAKING C++ objectS PERSISTENT - THE HIDDEN POINTERS

C++ objects of types that have virtual functions or virtual base classes contain volatile ('memory') pointers. We call such pointers 'hidden pointers' because they were not specified by the user. If such C++ objects are made persistent, then these pointers become invalid across program invocations. We encountered this problem in our implementation of 0++, which is a database language based on C++. O++ extends C++ with the ability to create and access persistent objects. In this paper, we describe the hidden pointers problem in detail and present several solutions to it. Our solutions are elegant in that they do not require modifying the C++ compiler or the semantics of C++. We also discuss another problem that arises because C++ allows base class pointers to point to derived class objects. C++ has emerged as the de facto standard language for software development, and database systems based on C++ have attracted much attention. We hope that the details and techniques presented will be useful to database researchers and to implementors of object-oriented database systems based on C++.

A fuzzy Petri net model for intelligent databases

Knowledge intensive applications require an intelligent environment, which can perform deductions in response to user queries or events that occur inside or outside of the applications. For that, we propose a fuzzy Petri net (FPN) model to represent knowledge and the behavior of an intelligent object-oriented database environment, which integrates fuzzy, active and deductive rules with database objects. The behavior of a system can be unpredictable due to the rules triggering or untriggering each other (non-termination). Intermediate and final database states may also differ according to the order of rule executions (non-confluence). In order to foresee and solve problematic behavior patterns, we employ a static rule analysis on the FPN structure that provides easy checking of the termination property without requiring any extra construct. In addition, with our proposed fuzzy inference algorithm, we guarantee confluent rule executions. The techniques and solutions provided in this study can be used in various complex systems, such as weather forecasting applications, environmental information systems, defense applications.
