An object-oriented anthropometric database was developed as a framework for integrating into an ergonomic man model, data for workplace modelling and ergonomic evaluation functions as well as basic anthropometric data required to construct a man model. In order to develop an ergonomic man model representing operators that interact with their working environments, not only anthropometric data but also efficient handling of such data and accurate representation of the workplace are needed as a prerequisite to proper ergonomic evaluation. In this paper, these distinct sets of data were incorporated into a common integrated database needed for the manipulation of an ergonomic man model and the generation of an anthropometric man itself. An object-oriented database scheme that possesses the property of hierarchical structure and set-valued attribute was employed for the design of the database to achieve flexibility and expandability, and to efficiently interface to any CAD system. UniSQL/X, an object-oriented database management system and the X-window system on a SPARC workstation were used for implementation. The ergonomic man model generated from the object-oriented database is found to demonstrate great flexibility, performance, and improved user-interface, when compared with existing ergonomic interface models or ergonomic CAD systems. Rapid prototyping and development of products and workplaces are becoming important factors for competitive power. Due to the shortened product life cycle, product evaluation should start right from the initial design stage. The concept of an object-oriented database enables any design system to integrate ergonomic evaluation into the design stage through a man model.

Functional and architectural features which are implemented in the PERCIO object-oriented DBMS are described. PERCIO has several unique features: Variable-length class and view class enhance database flexibility and maintainability; indirect virtual memory addressing and complex conditional retrieval augment database scalarbility, reliability and performance; and class-based storage structure achieves DBMS extensibility. Additionally, performance evaluation results are given. The schemes proposed and implemented for PERCIO resolve current OODBMS problems. object-oriented technologies are playing increasingly important roles in every level of software application for water resource management and modelling. except for data management levels where the relational logic is still the uncontested choice of information system developers despite the object-relational impedance mismatch. In this paper, we would like to present our experience concerning two different technologies for developing the object-oriented data management layer in information systems for water resources management: (i) the Java solution to obtain transparent persistence, the Java Data object (JDO) technology;(ii) a purer object solution with a light open source object database, Db4o. The process for implementing the two technologies in a Java-based hydro-information system is described, and the two different solutions were analysed and compared. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. MetaFactory: A cloud-based framework to configure and generate dynamic data structures from the STEP-NC knowledge graph

In our previous studies, twin-oriented manufacturing has been identified as a crucial solution to address the manufacturing crisis. Within this context, the notion of "digital twin as a service" necessitates that various twin services share and communicate with each other in a standardized manner. STEP-NC offers a potentially unified model to facilitate data exchange, providing object-oriented and standardized data models fora comprehensive representation of manufacturing resources in the digital realm. However, the complexity of STEP-NC renders it too cumbersome for implementation in diverse cloud-based services or PC-based software. This complexity is a fundamental reason why STEP-NC has struggled to find application in commercial CNC systems despite years of research. To overcome this technical challenge, this paper introduces a novel concept termed "dynamic STEP-NC data structure", inspired by the dynamic language philosophy of dynamic programming language (such as Python). This approach allows different services and software packages to maintain their own data definitions while still aligning with the original STEP-NC definition. We have developed a framework called MetaFactory that supports the configuration of streamlined data structures and generates the corresponding program code required by various service developers. On this basis, we implemented automatic modeling for a STEP-NC object-oriented database. Using the data trimming and dimensionality reduction methods provided by MetaFactory, several prototype systems for different application scenarios have been developed.

Semantic-based locking technique in object-oriented databases

This paper presents a locking-based concurrency control dealing with three important issues in object-oriented databases: semantics of methods, nested method invocation and referentially shared object. In the proposed scheme, locks are required for the execution of methods instead of atomic operations. This can reduce the locking overhead and deadlocks due to lock escalation. Also, a way of automating commutativity of methods is provided. In addition, concurrency is increased further by use of run-time information. A performance study is conducted by means of simulation using 007 benchmark. Through the simulation, the proposed technique is then compared with the two existing techniques. The performance studies show that the proposed scheme is superior to existing works. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this tutorial paper, the basic concepts of applying an object-oriented database (OODB) system, called ORION, to the management of a bill of materials (BOM) is addressed. The illustration attempts to demonstrate the linkage between the needs of a CAD/CAM environment and the production planning environment with specific reference to the material requirements planning (MRP) system of the future. The structure of a composite object made up of objects is the major consideration of the proposed object-oriented BOM (OOBOM). The concentration is on composite objects in the OOBOM schema evolution, their propagations of changing object instances, and the unique object identity of each manufacturing part. The proposed OOBOM system is rudimentary, and may be embodied by using the Itasca(TM) system, which is a commercial OODB system whose prototype is ORION, or by using the C++ language. In this paper, both viewpoints, ORION and C++, are discussed.

Concurrent data materialization for object-relational database with semantic metadata

For a company with many databases in different data models, it is necessary to consolidate them into one data model interchangeable and present data in one data model concurrently to users. The benefit is to let user stick to his/her own data model to access database in another data model. This paper presents a semantic metadata to preserve database constraints for data materialization to support user's view of database on an ad hoc base. The semantic metadata can store the captured semantics of a relational or an object-oriented database into classes and stored procedures triggered by events. The stored constraints and data can be materialized into a target database upon user request. The user is allowed to perform the data materialization many times alternatively. The process can provide a relational as well as an object oriented view to the users simultaneously. This concurrent data materialization function can be applied to data warehouse to consolidate heterogeneous database into a fact table in a data model of user's choice. Furthermore, a user can obtain either a relational view or an object-oriented view of the same dataset of an object-relational database interchangeably.

Path dictionary: A new access method for query processing in object-oriented databases

We present a new access method, called the path dictionary index (PDI) method, for supporting nested queries on object-oriented databases. PDI supports object traversal and associative search, respectively, with a path dictionary and a set of attribute indexes built on top of the path dictionary. We discuss issues on indexing and query processing in object-oriented databases;describe the operations of the new mechanism;develop cost models for its storage overhead and query and update costs;and compare the new mechanism to the path index method. The result shows that the path dictionary index method is significantly better than the path index method over a wide range of parameters in terms of retrieval and update costs and that the storage overhead grows slowly with the number of indexed attributes.
