In this paper we propose an object-oriented model for designing hypermedia applications. As the object-oriented paradigm allows complex and user-defined types, nonconventional and nonatomic attributes, we can take advantage of these capabilities, not only for information modelling, but also for providing alternative ways for accessing information. A query language is then presented;it is based on an object-oriented database System query language. It combines features of object-oriented databases queries and primitives for hypermedia navigation. The language offers the possibility of querying both the application-domain information, and allowing the designers to obtain information about the schema of the application. We present some examples of the use of the object-oriented model and the query language.

An object-oriented data model for multiple representation of object semantics

This paper proposes the ''poly-aspect data model,'' which is an extension of the object-oriented data model. The purpose of the poly-aspect data model is to represent in a natural way the multimedia data in the database. One of the features of the multimedia data is the diversified representation of the entities of the real world. In the poly-aspect data model, the entity is interpreted as an object, and a model is provided so that multiple complete representations are given to the object. Such an object is called the poly-aspect object. In the poly-aspect data model, an object may have more than one instance as its representation. The class defines the format of the instance. The multiple instance of the same object are distinguished by the class names. When the attributes of multiple instances are defined by the same superclass, those attributes are interpreted to have the same semantics. The same value is shared among the instances, and the consistency is retained. As a realization example of the poly-aspect object, the architecture of the ''Sarah'' database management system, which is currently being constructed experimentally is described.

Containment and optimization of object-preserving conjunctive queries

In the optimization of queries in an object-oriented database (OODB) system, a natural rst step is to use the typing constraints imposed by the schema to transform a query into an equivalent one that logically accesses a minimal set of objects. We study a class of queries for OODBs called conjunctive queries. Variables in a conjunctive query range over heterogeneous sets of objects. Consequently, a conjunctive query is equivalent to a union of conjunctive queries of a special kind, called terminal conjunctive queries. Testing containment is a necessary step in solving the equivalence and minimization problems. We first characterize the containment and minimization conditions for the class of terminal conjunctive queries. We then characterize containment for the class of all conjunctive queries and derive an optimization algorithm for this class. The equivalent optimal query produced is expressed as a union of terminal conjunctive queries, which has the property that the number of variables as well as their search spaces are minimal among all unions of terminal conjunctive queries. Finally, we investigate the complexity of the containment problem. We show that it is complete in Pi(2)(p).

object-oriented design for LHD data acquisition using client-server model

The LHD data acquisition system handles > 600 MB data per shot. The fully distributed data processing and the object-oriented system design are the main principles of this system, its wide flexibility has been realized by introducing the object-oriented method into the data processing, in which the object sharing and class libraries will provide the unified way of data handling for the network client-server programming. The object class libraries are described in C++, and the network object sharing is provided through the commercial soft-ware named HARNESS. As for the CAMAC setup, the Java script can use the C++ class libraries and thus establishes the relationship between the object-oriented database and the WWW server. In LHD experiments, the CAMAC system and the Windows NT operating system are applied for digitizing and acquiring data. respectively. For the purpose of the LHD data acquisition. the new CAMAC handling software on Windows NT have been developed to manipulate the SCSI-connected crate controllers. The CAMAC command lists and diagnostic data classes are shared between client and server computers. A lump of the diagnostic data can be treated as part of an object by the object-oriented programming. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

INCORPORATING FUZZINESS INTO ACTIVE RULES

Knowledge intensive applications require an intelligent environment, which can perform deductions in response to user queries or events that occur inside or outside of the applications. For that, we propose a fuzzy active object-oriented database for modeling knowledge intensive applications. In that, we incorporate fuzziness within the event, condition and action parts of an active rule. We consider deductive rules as special cases of active rules so that deductive queries are handled using abstract kind of events. We also introduce a model for fuzzy inferencing of fuzzy active rules where we develop a model for scenario concept. We use a Fuzzy Petri Net model for fuzzy rule-based inference.

Modeling and querying fuzzy spatiotemporal databases

Modeling spatiotemporal data, in particular fuzzy and complex spatial objects representing geographic entities and relations, is a topic of great importance ill geographic information systems, computer vision, environmental data management systems, etc. Because of complex requirements, it is challenging to represent spatiotemporal data and its features in databases and to effectively query them. This article presents a new approach to model and query the spatiotemporal data of fuzzy spatial and complex objects and/or spatial relations. In our case study, we use a meteorological database application in an intelligent database architecture, which combines an object-oriented database with a knowledgebase for modeling and querying spatiotemporal objects. AN ACTIVE OODB SYSTEM FOR GENOME PHYSICAL MAP ASSEMBLY

In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a, scientific database for the map assembly tasks performed by the geneticists at the University of Michigan Human Genome Center. Our system manages complex genomic data and supports the automation of the associated map assembly tasks. For this purpose, we have developed an overlap refinement hierarchy characterizing the types of overlap and ordering relationships between DNA fragments. Based on this model, we designed an associated set of inference operators to automate some of the contig assembly steps, such as inferring overlap information using transitivity rules. In order to realize this map inferencing approach and to take advantage of the modeling power offered by object-oriented database technology, we have developed an active object-oriented database (OODB) system, called Crystal, on the GemStone OODB. Crystal seamlessly integrates rule inferencing with object modeling and other typical database capabilities, thus avoiding the overhead in moving data between systems for rule processing and data management, and eliminating data mismatch in these different representations. We also discuss the implementation of the physical map assembly (PMA) tool on top of Crystal, which includes the realization of the genome information model and the map assembly inferencing process. PMA executes inferencing automatically, without explicitly having to initiate rule execution, and thus can respond to the incremental addition of new experimental data. In conclusion, we provide a walk-through example and several experimental results that demonstrate how our approach can be used to support physical contig assembly.

Designing OQL: Allowing objects to be queried

This paper tells the story of OQL, the standard query language of the object database Management Group (ODMG) [30]. The story starts in 1988, at INRIA in the Altair Group. The objective of that group was to develop an object-oriented database system [41]. This objective was reached: in September 1991 the O(2) database system started its commercial career as the main product of a company called O(2) Technology [6]. As opposed to its competitors, O(2) featured a full-fledged query language named O(2)SQL [22]. The story goes on with the creation of the ODMG in 1991 and the adoption of O(2)SQL as the standard object query language under its new and final name: OQL. During the following years, OQL went through some modifications, the most important of which resulted in OQL 1.2 that offers some level of compliance with SQL92. On top of providing the expressive power of the SQL92 query language [54], OQL allows objects to be queried. This is a claim also supported by the upcoming SQL3. However, due to its adequacy to the object oriented type system and its functional nature, OQL is much simpler to learn, use and implement. A goal of this paper is to demonstrate this. This paper tells about the mistakes and pertinent choices we made while designing and implementing OQL. I hope it also conveys the great pleasure I had to be part of this adventure. Active database support for STEP/EXPRESS models

The ISO STEP specifications aim to provide an effective means through which product information can be shared and exchanged between applications and enterprises. EXPRESS is a modelling language within the STEP specifications, which is used to describe product data. An EXPRESS model can be implemented on a database repository, queried upon and manipulated. However, EXPRESS models capture only the static aspects of a system. In this paper, proposed extensions to the EXPRESS language are made in order to model the dynamic behaviour of products and processes. A translator is implemented to transform such models to an active database, which has been developed on an object-oriented database, objectStore. The active component of the system is based on CLIPS, an expert system. Throughout the paper, a case based on a workflow process is used to demonstrate how a model can be mapped onto an active database.
