This paper proposed a new clustering technique for an object-oriented database mangement system. The technique is dynamic and employs a reduced set of statistics to minimize statistics collection overhead. Clustering ...

This paper addresses the design of an integrated framework for managing schema evolution. This framework is based on the adaptation and extension of two main schema evolution approaches, namely schema modification and schema versioning. The proposed framework provides an integrated environment to support different database evolution techniques (such as, modification and versions at the schema level, conversion, object versioning, and screening at the instance level). We introduce the concept of class/schema version pertinence enabling the database administrator to judge the pertinence of versions with regard to database applications. Finally, we propose a declarative language based on OQL, the ODMG query language, that the user can use to guide objects adaptation process when dealing with complex or application specific schema updates.
In this article, we propose a solution for the distributed objectoriented database design. Our work is based on a top-down approach. Notably, we concentrate on the allocation step that allows to place the object clas...

Model-based user interface development environments show promise for improving the productivity of user interface developers, and possibly for improving the quality of developed interfaces. However, model-based techniques have rarely been applied to the important area of database interfaces. This lack of experience with data intensive systems may have led to model-based projects failing to support certain requirements that are essential in data intensive applications, and has prevented database interface developers from benefiting from model-based techniques. This paper presents a model-based user interface development environment for objectdatabases, describing the models it supports, the relationships between these models, and the tool used to construct interfaces using the models.
ODB-Tools is a integrated environment for the objectoriented database (OODB) validation, preserving taxonomy coherence and performing taxonomic inferences, and semantic query optimization. Semantic query optimization...

Presented in this paper is a model that utilizes existing materialized views to handle a wide range of complex selection-based queries, including linear recursive queries. Such queries are complex because it is almost impossible for naive users to predict the formulation of their predicate expressions. object variables bound to objects in the result of a query are allowed to appear in the predicate of that query. Also, the predicate definition is extended to make it possible to have in the output only a subset of the objects from the actual result of a linear recursive query. We introduce an algorithm that utilizes existing materialized views in answering queries covered by the presented model. The presented model has been implemented as a part of our object-oriented database management system prototype. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

The amount of available data in the neuroscience community is growing rapidly, and is approaching the point where researchers can no longer keep up. This paper describes the development of the Modeler's Workspace, a digital library system we are building to improve the researcher's means of accessing, managing and sharing neuroscience data. The Workspace consists of a distributed system of heterogeneous databases, and a Java front-end for data mining and visualization. A three-tier architecture with CORBA as the middleware facilitates database federation. We discuss our design choices, and some sociological issues, such as how to encourage data submission and ensure security and quality control. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
