With the growing importance of external and shared data, the set of requirements for Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA) is shifting. Current solutions still come with shortcomings, esp. in multi-stakeholder environments where sensitive content is exchanged. We argue that a new level in the evolution of BIA can be unlocked by tearing down the barriers between storage and computing based on upcoming storage technologies. In particular, we propose a revitalization of ideas from object-oriented databases. We present results from a joint project that aimed at delineating design options for BIA solutions built upon this idea. The paper outlines the interplay of various architectural layers from storage to business with an object-oriented platform at its core. By doing so, we mark the way for further research, outline a novel design of BIA solutions, and illustrate the consequences of low-level infrastructure innovations on the business layer.

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is a commonly used method for dimensionality reduction. Despite its successes, it has limitations under some situations, including the small sample size problem, the homoscedasticity assumption that different classes have the same Gaussian distribution, and its inability to produce probabilistic output and handle missing data. In this paper. we propose a semi-supervised and heteroscedastic extension of probabilistic LDA, called S(2)HPLDA, which aims at overcoming all these limitations under a common principled framework. Moreover, we apply automatic relevance determination to determine the required dimensionality of the low-dimensional space for dimensionality reduction. We empirically compare our method with several related probabilistic subspace methods on some face and objectdatabases. Very promising results are obtained from the experiments showing the effectiveness of our proposed method.

In this paper we introduce inheritance in deductive objectdatabases and define an operator for hierarchically composing deductive objects with state evolution capabilities. Evolution of such objects models the expected transactional behavior while preserving many important features of deductive databases. Deductive objects can be organized in ISA schemas where each object may inherit or redefine the rules defined in other objects. The resulting inheritance mechanism handles both the deductive and the update/transactional issues. Our framework accommodates several types of inheritance such as overriding, extension, and refinement. Besides presenting the language, this paper defines its semantics and provides a description of the interpreter for the language that has been implemented.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate object-oriented (OO) features in a language, suitable for artificial intelligence (AI), which will execute in a web environment. Earlier researchers have claimed that such a possibility will pave the way for better enterprise systems of tomorrow. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, the key OO features, inheritance and polymorphism, are presented using suitable examples. Visual Prologe is the language used to demonstrate the examples and the same executes in web environment. Findings - This premise definitely matches the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of existing systems which can aptly be called business process reengineering (BPR) in this field of study. A monolithic/homogeneous expert database design based system supporting AI and OO capabilities which executes in web environment is the result of this study. Research limitations/implications - There is no argument about the optimality of the search which is carried out while using this environment, which is purely based on the computer language used. Practical implications - The power of similar environment has enormous potential in developing better enterprise systems of tomorrow. This declarative environment helps enterprise resource planning (ERP) evolve faster towards strategic decision making rather than remaining as transaction processing systems. Originality/value - It is hoped that this paper will inspire other researchers in the field of BPR of existing ERP systems.

In this paper, we report on the design and implementation of a multi-modal user interface of the virtual world database system (VWDB). The VWDB is currently under development at Ochanomizu University with the aim of realizing a new generation database system for cyberspace applications. The system will be constructed bu integrating a virtual reality system and an object-oriented database system. Since the VWDB provides a virtual world as the user's database interface, the system must support a multi-modal database language with which users can interact with the VWDB database by means of gesture and voice. We introduce here an automata-based approach to designing the multi-modal manner. We identify a set of automata to characterize the multi-modal interaction and describe a semantic network approach for translating a multi-modal user input to an equivalent message to access and manipulate database objects.

Recursive queries are required in many object-oriented database applications. Among them we can mention Bill-Of-Material (BOM), stock market dependencies, various kinds of networks (transportation, telecommunication, etc.), processing semi-structured data (XML, RDF), and so on. The support for recursive queries in current query languages is limited. In this paper we present recursive query processing capabilities for object-oriented environments. They are a part of the Stack-Based Query Language (SBQL). SBQL offers powerful and flexible recursive querying capabilities due to the fact that recursive processing operators arc fully orthogonal to other capabilities of this language. This paper discusses novel SBQL constructs, such as transitive closures, fixed point equations and recursive procedures/views. They are implemented within the OODBMS ODRA devoted to Web and grid applications.

object-oriented databases (OODBs) have been used for many advanced applications requiring advanced modeling power. In this paper, a locking-based concurrency control scheme is presented for OODBs. The proposed scheme reduces locking overhead for class hierarchy which is an important property in OODBs. While existing schemes show good performance only for specific applications, the proposed scheme can incur less locking overhead for any applications. For the performance evaluation of the proposed scheme, simulation is conducted using 007 benchmark. Through the simulation, the proposed scheme is compared with the two existing techniques. The performance studies show that the proposed scheme is superior to existing works.
