This paper examines the application of object-oriented database management systems to computer-aided control engineering. The system representation models and data types employed by existing contro1 engineering packages for system representation are surveyed. The object classes that are required are derived from this and an object model for system representation is developed. The database management facilities provided by existing control engineering software are minimal, and the facilities required by an integrated working environment are outlined, including model management. The rôle of open systems in definillg and accessing model classes is examined with a view to developing a standardised framework for object-oriented computer-aided control engineering.

object-oriented database management systems (OODBMS) combine the data abstraction and computational models of object-oriented programming languages with the query and performance capabilities of database management systems. A concise, formal data model for OODBMS has not been universally accepted, preventing detailed investigation of various system issues such as query processing. We define a data model that captures the essence of classification-based object-oriented systems and formalize concepts such as object identity, inheritance, and methods. The main topic of the paper is the presentation of a query processing methodology complete with an object calculus and a closed object algebra. Query processing issues such as query safety and object calculus to object algebra translation are discussed in detail. The paper concludes with a discussion of equivalence-preserving transformation rules for object algebra expressions.

The emerging research area of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) has yielded a number of groupware applications in recent years. The application and installation of these systems in large organization or for the support of inter-organizational cooperation requires information about the organizational environment in which they are used. The TOSCA system which is described aims to provide that kind of information to users and applications. The author describes the object-oriented data model, the design of the multimedia user interface, the integration with other applications and the architecture of TOSCA.< >

Recent developments in knowledge-based systems technology offer an excellent and effective approach to building management support systems for strategic management. We have developed a hyperknowledge support system for strategic management in the forest industry, and have tried it out in several strategic business units in a major corporation. The core of the system is an object-oriented expert system, which has been overlaid with a hyperknowledge support system. This turns out to be a useful construct, as we get a non-trivial level of knowledge representation and an attractive and easy-to-use support system. We tested the system with 30 managers and some early results show definite improvements in the quality of some key elements of the strategic management process. Our results show so far that hyperknowledge support systems promise to have a significant impact on strategic management.< >

The need for incremental algorithms for evaluating database queries is well known, but constructing algorithms that work on object-oriented databases (OODBs) has been difficult. The reason is that OODB query languages involve complex data types including composite objects and nested collections. As a result, existing algorithms have limitations in that the kinds of database updates are restricted, the operations found in many query languages are not supported, or the algorithms are too complex to be described precisely. We present an incremental computation algorithm that can handle any kind of database updates, can accept any expressions in complex query languages such as OQL, and can be described precisely. By translating primitive values and records into collections, we can reduce all query expressions comprehension. This makes the problems with incremental computation less complicated and thus allows us to decribe of two parts: one is to maintain the consistency in each comprehension occurrence and the other is to update the value of an entire expression. The algorithm is so flexible that we can use strict updates, lazy updates, and their combinations. By comparing the performance of applications built with our mechanism and that of equivalent hand written update programs, we show that our incremental algorithm can be iplemented efficiently.

The 3-Dimensional Information Space (3DIS) is an extensible object-oriented framework for infor- mation management. It is specifically oriented toward supporting the database requirements for data- intensive information system applications in which (1) information objects of various levels of abstraction and modalities must be accommodated, (2) descriptive and structural information (metadata) is rich and dynamic, and (3) users who are not database experts must be able to design, manipulate, and evolve databases. In response to these needs, the 3DIS provides an approach in which data and the descriptive information about data are handled uniformly in an extensible framework. The 3DIS provides a simple, geometric, and formal representation of data which forms a basis for understanding, defining, and manipulating databases. Several prototype implementations based upon the 3DIS have been designed and implemented and are in experimental use.
