In the nowadays economy, the producers of IT solutions face a new requirement that forces them to entirely change the product creation modality, without resorting to quality-related compromises. Being a market leader, coming with the last hour technologies, became more important than ever. Working with an increasingly complex software and hardware infrastructure, challenged by the continuous increase of the quality-related requirements and by the necessity to reduce the costs, the software companies tend to direct more and more towards software development sound solutions. The development of object-oriented software requires a different approach as compared to the traditional methods, based on data flow and functional decomposition. Unlike the approaches grounded on functional and data analysis, separately considering the system behaviour and /or data, the object-oriented analysis and design perceive objects as main agents involved in calculations: each class of objects comprising both data and operations, (behaviour).

Crowdsourcing is a distributed problem-solving and production model. It takes advantage of the internet technology, helps enterprises save cost and improve efficiency. However, uncertain quality is a significant challenge for crowdsourcing. On the basis of the existing literatures, this paper proposes 23 software quality factors from two aspects: platform and project. By using multiple regression analysis on the data of one of the most successful software crowdsourcing platforms TopCoder. com, this paper analyzes the impact of the factors on software quality and identifies six key factors, including the average quality score of the platform, the number of contemporary projects, the length of component document, the number of registered developers, the maximum rating of submitted developers, and the design score. According to the result, this paper suggests four aspects for enterprises to improve software quality: choosing the prosperous period of platform to post a project, reducing the scale of projects, attracting more and higher skillful developers to participate, and improving software design score.

Empirical assessment of the impact of structural properties on the changeability of object-oriented software

The changeability of software can be viewed as the quality of being capable of change, which among others implies that the task of changing the software requires little effort. It is hypothesized that structural properties of the software affect changeability, in which case measures of such properties can be used as changeability indicators. Ways in which structural properties of the software can be measured are described and empirically validated based on data collected from an industrial Java development project. The measures are validated by using them as candidate variables in a multivariate regression model of the actual effort required to make modifications to the evolving software system. The results suggest that some measures that combine existing structural attribute measures with a weighting factor based on the relative proportion of change in each class can explain a large amount of the variation in change effort. This constitutes initial, empirical evidence that the proposed measures are valid changeability indicators. Consequently, they may help designers to identify and correct design problems during the development and maintenance of object-oriented software. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

As a fact, the application of object-oriented approach is of high significance in the area of software development since it call abet efficiency or cost effectiveness and reduce error probability during software design and implementation. In order to quantify, especially qualitative aspects such as potential error hot spots caused by elevated design complexity, software measurement call strongly assist. Particularly, metrics proposed by Chidamber and Kemerer as well as Abreu's MOOD metrics set are presumably most prevalent in practice and provide adequate explanatory power. Especially the object-oriented programming language Java cannot be dismissed from one's thoughts because 1 lot of Java libraries serve as foundation for contemporary applications. Thus, after initially defining language bindings for the aforementioned metrics, we perform measurement and evaluation of various Java standard libraries like J2SE,J2EE, J2ME, JWSDP and few others concerning different aspects. The results acquired are beneficial to be used by software designers for aligning and orienting their design with common industry practices. Furthermore, our extensive measurements enable us to carry, out key metrics correlation studies incorporating many thousand Java classes.

The object-oriented approach to software development facilitates and encourages programming practices that increase reusability, correctness and maintainability in code. This is achieved in Java by providing mechanisms for inheritance, abstraction and encapsulation. By measuring properties that indicate to what extent these mechanisms are utilised we can determine to a large extent how good a design is. However, because these properties often conflict with other goals such as high cohesion and low coupling it can be difficult for a programmer to recognise the best *** propose the novel approach of treating object-oriented design as a combinatorial optimisation problem, where the goal is maximisation of a set of design metrics. With a view to developing a fully automated design improvement tool we have developed a prototype that uses a small metrics suite combined with automated refactorings to move methods to their optimum positions in the class hierarchy. The action of this simulated annealing system produces a new design that is superior in terms of the metrics used and when judged on object-oriented principles.

This paper presents the results of a study in which we empirically investigated the suite of object-oriented (OO) design metrics introduced in [13]. More specifically, our goal is to assess these metrics as predictors of fault-prone classes and, therefore, determine whether they can be used as early quality indicators. This study is complementary to the work described in [30] where the same suite of metrics had been used to assess frequencies of maintenance changes to classes. To perform our validation accurately, we collected data on the development of eight medium-sized information management systems based on identical requirements. All eight projects were developed using a sequential life cycle model, a well-known OO analysis/design method and the C++ programming language. Based on empirical and quantitative analysis, the advantages and drawbacks of these OO metrics are discussed. Several of Chidamber and Kemerer's OO metrics appear to be useful to predict class fault-proneness during the early phases of the life-cycle. Also, on our data set, they are better predictors than ''traditional'' code metrics, which can only be collected at a later phase of the software development processes.

We present an approach to migrate legacy systems to object-oriented platforms. The process consists of six sequential phases and encompasses reverse engineering and re-engineering activities. The aim of the reverse engineering phases is to decompose programs into components implementing the user interface management and components implementing application domain objects. The identification of objects is centred around persistent data store and exploits object-oriented design metrics. Wrapping techniques are the core of the re-engineering activities They make new systems able to exploit existing resources, thus allowing an incremental and selective translation of the identified objects.
