Dynamic information dissemination to mobile users

We present the dynamic channel model, an information push model for data dissemination to mobile users. This is a set of extensions to the conceptual models developed for information channels that capture mobility-specific requirements. Dynamic channels are used for filtering and setting update order priorities for the information that users intend to monitor, which depends on their location and changes as they roam. The dynamic channel model was implemented in Ubidata, a software framework for the construction of systems for information dissemination to mobile users.

Context: Inheritance is the cornerstone of object-oriented development, supporting conceptual modeling, subtype polymorphism and software reuse. But inheritance can be used in subtle ways that make complex systems hard to understand and extend, clue to the presence of implicit dependencies in the inheritance hierarchy. objective: Although these dependencies often specify well-known schemas (i.e., recurrent design or coding patterns, such as hook and template methods), new unanticipated dependency schemas arise in practice, and can consequently be hard to recognize and detect. Thus, a developer making changes or extensions to an object-oriented system needs to understand these implicit contracts defined by the dependencies between a class and its subclasses, or risk that seemingly innocuous changes break them. Method: To tackle this problem, we have developed an approach based on Formal Concept Analysis. Our Formal Concept Analysis based-Reverse Engineering methodology (FoCARE) identifies undocumented hierarchical dependencies in a hierarchy by taking into account the existing structure and behavior of classes and subclasses. Results: We validate our approach by applying it to a large and non-trivial case study, yielding a catalog of hierarchy schemas, each one composed of a set of dependencies over methods and attributes in a class hierarchy. We show how the discovered dependency schemas can be used not only to identify good design practices, but also to expose bad smells in design, thereby helping developers in initial reengineering phases to develop a first mental model of a system. Although some of the identified schemas are already documented in existing literature, with our approach based on Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), we are also able to identify previously unidentified schemas. A method for designing the class methods of an information system is described. The method is part of FOOM - Functional and object-oriented Methodology. In the analysis phase of FOOM, two models defining the users' requirements are created: a conceptual data model an initial class diagram;and a functional model - hierarchical OO-DFDs (object-oriented dataflow diagrams). Based on these models, a well-defined process of methods design is applied. First, the OO-DFDs are converted into transactions, i.e., system processes that supports user task. The components and the process logic of each transaction are described in detail, using pseudocode. Then, each transaction is decomposed, according to well-defined rules, into class methods of various types: basic methods, application-specific methods and main transaction (control) methods. Each method is attached to a proper class;messages between methods express the process logic of each transaction. The methods are defined using pseudocode or message charts.

Design patterns have been widely accepted as a solution for solving recurring design problems in object oriented development. Reifications of design patterns can vary from one development environment to another, and use of inappropriate reifications may impose a serious threat to quality of a software system. In this paper, we propose an approach to applying the profile mechanism in reifying a design pattern. Central to this approach are stereotypes that are defined in a profile and used to represent different roles in a design pattern. Developers can apply these stereotypes in their application model when design patterns are used. The advantage of the profile mechanism is that developers can 1) define their own reification of a pattern in a profile based on a specific software system, and 2) find errors in an application model via the conformance checking of the model against the profile. More importantly, we apply our existing tool called ICER, which is based on the profile mechanism, to provide automatic checking for the application of design patterns. To illustrate the advantage of the profile mechanism supported by ICER, we show the different reifications for the Observer pattern. Last, experimental results show that ICER does not suffer from the scalability problem as the size of an application model increases.

A high number of metrics have been used to measure object-oriented Software Maintainability (OOSM). However, there is no comprehensive and useful catalog showing which metrics are more appropriated for adoption in OOSM assessment in both, academic and industrial environments. In a previous work we performed a systematic mapping study to identify maintainability metrics resulting in 570 OOSM metrics found. We classified those metrics in 15 domain categories to help us on the catalog building process. This categorization will be the basement of our inclusion/exclusion criteria when we select which metrics will compose a catalog. Using the proposed categorization we believe that we can select the most relevant and/or popular OOSM metrics. In this position paper we discuss a range of options of OOSM metrics categorization, making the OOSM metrics catalog building process accurate and reliable. Such options include how to evaluate them by the academic and practitioner points of view. We also expect that such discussion during the workshop can help us to identify other options to both propose a more useful catalog and to perform its evaluation.

object-oriented Programming (OOP) is one of the most used programming paradigms. Thus, researches dedicated in improvement of software quality that adhere to this paradigm are demanded. Complementarily, maintainability is considered a software attribute that plays an important role in its quality level. In this context, object-oriented Software Maintainability (OOSM) has been studied through years and several researchers proposed a high number of metrics to measure it. Nevertheless, there is no standardization or a catalogue to summarize all the information about these metrics, helping the researchers to make decision about which metrics can be adopted to perform their experiments in OOSM. Actually, distinct areas in both academic and industrial environment, such as Software development, Project Management, and Software Research can adopt them to support decision-making processes. Thus, this work researched about the usage of OOSM metrics in academia and industry in order to help researchers in making decision about the metrics suite to be adopted. We found 570 OOSM metrics. Additionally, as a preliminary result we proposed a catalog with 36 metrics that were most used in academic works/experiments, trying to guide researchers with their decision-make about which metrics are more indicated to be adopted in their experiments.

A formal approach to perfective software maintenance: System integration using a basis of formal object-oriented components

We investigate how a formalism known as a basis and common to many areas of applied mathematics and engineering can be applied to perfective maintenance and the integration of application systems in software engineering, using an object-oriented approach. It is concluded that this formalism serves as a mathematical model for perfective software maintenance and software systems integration activities under object-oriented development. Theorems and properties about the model are reported as guides to software maintenance. The model and formal maintenance techniques have been applied to a software system in the management information systems area to demonstrate this approach to perfective maintenance and to assist in validating the model. © 1992 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Software Process Improvement is generally regarded a key to economic success by increasing the quality of software systems, accelerating time-to-market and decreasing development costs. Component-based software engineering, as an emerging development paradigm, targets very similar goals by focusing on the assembly of software systems from components and emphasising software reuse. This paper firstly provides an overview on the breadth and complexity of component-based development and then considers software process assessment and improvement in the context of component-based software engineering, identifying the major deficiencies of both fields with respect to the other. Based on these insights, an introduction to the EU-funded project OOSPICE (IST-1999-29073) focussing on overcoming these deficiencies is provided by detailing the project's domain, its rationale, objectives and outcomes.

Utility companies are shifting their maintenance strategies from corrective or time-based to risk based. Meanwhile, the asset datasets which support these strategies are being migrated from spreadsheets to databases. As a first necessary step of this migration, the authors analyzes the requirements from risk based maintenance strategies add to the maintenance management software systems, through extending the use cases of existing software products. The main contribution and characteristic of these extensions is to provide "flexible information sharing", i.e. facilitate the growing demands to exchange asset data among stakeholders for the future development of asset management systems.
