A framework for object-oriented reverse engineering of legacy information systems

There is every indication that an object-oriented view of an information system is a solid foundation for understanding its legacy organization, for relating it to the environment in which it is embedded and for guiding its reengineering. In this paper we present a framework based upon the formal object-oriented specification language TROLL, which provides an object-oriented view of legacy information systems. The aim is to combine existing methods and keep results in a common and suitable description base which provides the appropriate form for deriving object specifications from the legacy IS. We use the language TROLL not only as description language, but also as a framework to support the maintenance engineers in their reverse engineering tasks by giving hints about what to do next to complete the object specifications. The result of the approach is a formal object-oriented specification of the legacy IS that is suitable both for developing a new IS or for reengineering the legacy system.

Improving object-oriented frameworks by Considering the Characteristics of Constituent Elements

Advances in object-oriented frameworks (usually abbreviated as "OOF" or simply "frameworks") are currently regarded as one of the most promising areas in software development. However, many OOFs and related projects fail. To bypass known OOF related problems, a novel approach for the systematic improvement of OOFs will be introduced in this article. The proposed approach is based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the "divide and conquer" principle, which posits that a complex problem is easier to manage if it is broken down into simpler problems. The fundamental idea behind the research can be expressed with the assumption that elements which constitute OOF can influence the user's perceptions via the most important OOF characteristics - understandability, adaptability and confidence. The original outcome of our research is a conceptual OOF model and an OOF improvement process which can be used by framework developers as well as framework users. Several practical and theoretical implications of this work can be foreseen. Practitioners might use the outcomes of this research to develop more successful frameworks and for OOF evaluation purposes. From a theoretical viewpoint, this research can be used as a foundation for evaluating the implications of OOF-related guidelines and design approaches. While our research was mainly based on existing literature and common theories, we are aware of its limitations. Because of this, we plan to continue our research in several directions. Our current research is directed at empirically validating the conceptual OOF model that is presented in this article and at validating the proposed approach in an actual setting.

An application framework provides a reusable design and implementation for a family of software systems. If the framework contains defects, the defects will be passed on to the applications developed from the framework. framework defects are hard to discover at the time the framework is instantiated. Therefore, it is important to remove all defects before instantiating the framework. The problem addressed in this paper is developing an automated state-based test suite generator technique that uses hook technology to produce test suites to test frameworks at the system level. A case study is reported and its results show that the proposed technique is reasonably effective at detecting faults. A supporting tool that automatically produces framework test cases, executes them, and evaluates the results is presented. In this paper, we present a recursive molecular model suitable for multiresolution analysis in a variety of application areas. Our approach allows ease of use by computer scientists and biologists by proposing a software interface for molecular analysis that hides programming details. We demonstrate that our design is flexible enough for use in desktop analytical applications, in large-scale parallel simulations, and as a server for remote molecular analysis across wide-area networks.

Efficient multicast routing in high speed networks

This paper presents two algorithms: for a minimal cost shared multicast tree construction (MCTC), and for a scalable multicast session call establishment, called multicast tree development (MCTD). Both algorithms are of original design based on a network simplex presentation, providing a new effective approach to the MCTC, and an object-oriented modelling framework providing the highest scalability for sparse groups with high dynamics of membership, different quality of service requirements and multiple senders. A new approach is proposed for the MCT construction-bidirectional growing of the MCT without pruning;instead the MCTD makes use of extra branches to improve reliability and advertise new receivers.

framework-specific modeling languages (FSMLs) help developers build applications based on object-oriented frameworks. FSMLs model abstractions and rules of application programming interfaces (APIs) exposed by frameworks and can express models of how applications use APIs. Such models aid developers in understanding, creating, and evolving application code. We present four exemplar FSMLs and a method for engineering new FSMLs. The method was created postmortem by generalizing the experience of building the exemplars and by specializing existing approaches to domain analysis, software development, and quality evaluation of models and languages. The method is driven by the use cases that the FSML under development should support and the evaluation of the constructed FSML is guided by two existing quality frameworks. The method description provides concrete examples for the engineering steps, outcomes, and challenges. It also provides strategies for making engineering decisions. Our work offers a concrete example of software language engineering and its benefits. FSMLs capture existing domain knowledge in language form and support application code understanding through reverse engineering, application code creation through forward engineering, and application code evolution through round-trip engineering.

Estimating the coverage of the framework application reusable cluster-based test cases

object-oriented frameworks support both software code and design reusability. In addition, it is found that providing class-based tests with the framework reduces considerably the class-based testing time and effort of the applications developed using the frameworks. Similarly, reusable cluster-based test cases can be generated using the framework hooks, and they, too, can be provided with the framework to reduce the cluster testing time and effort of the framework applications. In this paper, we introduce a methodology to estimate the possible coverage of the cluster-based reusable test cases for framework applications prior to suggesting and applying a specific technique to produce the test cases. An experimental case study is conducted to demonstrate the practical issues in applying the introduced methodology and to give insights on the possible coverage of the framework reusable cluster-based test cases. The results of applying the methodology on five framework applications show that, on average, the reusable cluster-based test cases cover at least one-third of the cluster testing areas of the interface classes created during the framework application engineering stage. A description is given of Intermedia, a tool designed to support both teaching and research in a university environment. This multiapplication hypermedia system provides linking capabilities integrated into a desktop user environment. Hypermedia is simply an extension of hypertext that incorporates other media in addition to text. To promote consistency, the applications were built with an object-oriented framework. A sample Intermedia session is presented.

In a dynamic environment, a manufacturing system should be reconfigurable to make the products with lot size of one and a high product mix in mass customization. A manufacturing system is continuously evolved to make new products at different time scales and ensure uninterrupted productions when internal or external changes occur. System evolution relates to add, remove, upgrade components, and reconfigure the system at different levels and scopes. However, scientific methods and tools are lacking to support designers in reconfiguring a system subject to given changes. This becomes a big hurdle to adopt automated solutions in small- and medium-sized enterprises. To support system reconfiguration, we propose a generic framework and methods to assess the performance of heterogeneous robotic systems or components. The proposed methods can also help 1) designers to select components for an integrated solution based on the needs and 2) robot manufacturers to identify the weaknesses of their products.
