A Web-based OO platform for the development of multimedia collaborative applications

Building CSCW applications is still a complex task. This paper presents a software framework based on objects for building collaborative applications mainly on top of the Web. The 10 objects of the framework are box, boxobject, environment, user, role, session, broadcast, view, boxobjectType and floorControl. We argue that these objects can be combined to produce a great number of collaborative applications. The main aspects in the framework and objects design are discussed. Examples of applications that were developed using the framework are also shown. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

REMD toolkit : a composable software to generate parallelized simulation programs

We developed a toolkit to generate a replica exchange method program which is suitable to solve the multipleminima problem that prevents the accurate estimation of thermodynamical quantities. The toolkit was designed as a set of software components, so that any new variant of simulation program can be built by assembling suitable components. They are categorized according to three types of functions : parallelization of simulation programs, selection of sampling algorithms, and incorporation of an arbitrary force field implementation into the program. The extensibility and efficiency of the toolkit was demonstrated by generating a new variant of replica exchange method program which implements CHARMM force field. It was shown that the replica exchange scheme not only reduces the total computational cost with the increase in the number of replicas but achieves almost linear-speedup with the number of CPUs.

This paper describes a wireless environmental monitoring system developed at the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE) 1451.1 standards using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) tool. This system is built on the established object-oriented framework of IEEE 1451.1. It consists of two IEEE 1451.1-based Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP) nodes. These nodes communicate with each other applying the client-server and publisher subscriber communication models of the IEEE 1451.1 standard and implementing the IEEE 802.11 wireless communication protocol. Two implementations of the interfaces based on the IEEE 1451.1 communication models are explained. One implementation illustrates the publisher subscriber model by publishing multiple sensor data using UDP/IP Java MulticastSocket. The other implementation illustrates the client-server model through the request and response of sensor TEDS data using TCP/1P Java Socket. The work described in this paper provides some guidelines for developing IEEE1451.1-based applications.

The integration of networked applications, especially those requiring continuous access to shared information resources and databases, may be effected by scheduled unavailability of one or more of these applications. The scheduled unavailability usually occurs due to a number of reasons including application or data backup, software or hardware maintenance for the application's platform, executing periodic processes such as file reorganization or end-of-period processes, application maintenance, or application migration. This paper provides an object-oriented framework to increase the availability of integrated applications without fully replicating the application environment such as the application platforms, programs, and data. The proposed framework can be used to maintain the integration of networked applications during scheduled unavailability of one of the applications. In addition, the proposed framework enables highly available applications integrations while maintaining data and state consistency of the applications. This framework provides a cost-effective solution for increasing availability of networked applications integration.

Based on the experience of development of industrial application frameworks for the telecommunications domain, we compare different approaches and techniques for achieving software reuse. In particular, we describe an assessment we performed on two application frameworks for the telecommunications domain developed in Sodalia. The assessment had the objective of collecting evidence on the benefits and implications of different techniques which can be adopted for achieving large-grain reuse in product line development.

This paper introduces an application framework for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1588 standard. This application framework, developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), consists of five layers: hardware layer, operating system layer, middleware and tools layer, IEEE 1588 layer, and application layer. A prototype application system has been developed based on the established IEEE 1588 application framework using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) tool. A case study of the IEEE 1588 Delay Request-Response mechanism based on the application framework is presented The object-oriented application framework can ease integration and simplify the development of new IEEE 1588 applications by reducing the amount of time and errors to design and develop the IEEE 1588 standard infrastructure. Another benefit of this application framework is to enable developers to achieve standards compliance more readily.

This paper describes different design levels in the development of an intelligent tutoring system (ITS. Our ITS design proposal should ease the process of ITS development and make it more efficient. Firstly, we present a direct-mapping from the uppermost abstract level to the structural level. Next, we present a first direct top-down approach to design the ITS from its structural level. Since it has some drawbacks, we then propose a second design approach, using a framework. We thus define what we call an ITS-framework, and we show how such a framework can make the design and the development if an ITS more efficient thanks to reusability, flexibility and extensibility. We end up discussing the advantages and disadvantages of this second, framework-based, approach.

Design pattern density is a metric that measures how much of an object-oriented design can be understood and represented as instances of design patterns Expert developers have long believed that a high design pattern density implies a high maturity of the design under inspection This paper presents a quantifiable and observable definition of this metric The metric is illustrated and qualitatively validated using four real-world case studies We present several hypotheses of the metric's meaning and their including the one about design maturity We propose that the design pattern density of a maturing framework has a fixed point and we show that if software design patterns make learning frameworks easier, a framework's design pattern density is a measure of how much easier it will become

In this paper, we discuss the design and use of an object-oriented framework for simulating a two-echelon inventory system. We present how the framework can be used to simulate the backorder and load building queues at the warehouse level of the system. In addition, we describe the modeling options for the backorder processing for replenishment orders sent to the warehouse. Filled orders must then be consolidated into loads for shipping to the retailer level. The framework is built on a Java Simulation Library (JSL) and permits easy modeling and execution of simulation models. A set of experiments is performed to illustrate how queueing disciplines for the backorder and load building queues effect the lead-time experienced at the retailer level. In addition, we summarize future research efforts to model complex supply chains.

Event notification is essential in network management. Many components in a distributed NMS need an event notification mechanism, and so ail event notification framework is expected to facilitate the development of the components. CORBA is a promising platform to build such a framework, hut its performance is not sufficient for monitoring large-scale networks. This paper proposes an event notification framework that has high performance and customizability. The framework is based on Java and CORBA, and has customization points at which event handling capabilities call be added. Java gives the framework flexibility in the sense that event handling capabilities call be added and replaced dynamically by using downloadable Java programs. High throughput of more than 1000 events per second has been achieved by event hatching.
