Automatic extraction of lunar impact craters from Chang'E-1 satellite photographs

The distribution characteristics of the impact craters can provide a large amount of information on impact history and the lunar evolution process. In this research, based on the digital elevation model （DEM） data originating from Change＇E-1 CCD stereo camera, three automatic extraction methods for the impact craters are implemented in two research areas： direct extraction from flooded DEM data （the Flooded method）, object-oriented extraction from DEM data by using ENVI ZOOM function （the object-oriented method） and novel object-oriented extraction from flooded DEM data （the Flooded object-oriented method）. Accuracy assessment, extracted degree computation, cumulative frequency analysis, shape and age analysis of the extracted craters combined display the following results. （1） The Flooded object-oriented method yields better accuracy than the other two methods in the two research areas; the extraction result of the Flooded method offers the similar accuracy to that of the object-oriented method. （2） The cumulative frequency curves for the extracted craters and the confirmed craters share a simi- lar change trajectory. （3） The number of the impact craters extracted by the three methods in the Imbrian period is the largest and is of various types; as to their age earlier than lmbrain, it is difficult to extract because they could have been destroyed.

Ontological modeling for software application development

The analysis of application for software development is usually guided and, hence, constrained by concepts and constructs of structured and object-oriented programming languages. It produces an analysis model that bears no essential difference from a software design. Here, we introduce an ontological Weltanschauung in application analysis for understanding essentials and novelties, which are obscured in structured and object-oriented methods of application analysis. The ontological viewpoint is reified with a systemic framework, or simply an ontology, which can be related to software design. Thus, we can apply ontological analysis in software development. An extended unified framework for the rapid development of automated manufacturing systems

The design of today's manufacturing systems involves the integration of specialised components with specific properties and functionality. Indeed, it has been a formidable task for the manufacturing community to develop a useable system economically with enhanced efficiency. In view of the technological advances in developing complex manufacturing systems, a unified framework had been proposed by the authors of this paper to formalise the procedures for the development of such systems. This paper presents an extension to this framework that automates the simulation of system behaviour at the design level. This extended framework incorporates a frame-based representation of the abstract classes that are generated from the unified framework, so that an expert system shell can be used to generate the expected behaviour of higher level designs prior to subsequent developments. The advantages of the extended framework include a shortened cycle for the product design and greater ease for system designers to produce manufacturing systems that better conform to their original specifications. A pharmaceutical system is chosen as a case example to illustrate the extended framework's capability. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Remote sensing of impervious surfaces in the urban areas: Requirements, methods, and trends

The knowledge of impervious surfaces, especially the magnitude, location, geometry, spatial pattern of impervious surfaces and the perviousness-imperviousness ratio, is significant to a range of issues and themes in environmental science central to global environmental change and human-environment interactions. Impervious surface data is important for urban planning and environmental and resources management. Therefore, remote sensing of impervious surfaces in the urban areas has recently attracted unprecedented attention. In this paper, various digital remote sensing approaches to extract and estimate impervious surfaces will be examined. Discussions will focus on the mapping requirements of urban impervious surfaces. In particular, the impacts of spatial, geometric, spectral, and temporal resolutions on the estimation and mapping will be addressed, so will be the selection of an appropriate estimation method based on remotely sensed data characteristics. This literature review suggests that major approaches over the past decade include pixel-based (image classification, regression, etc.), sub-pixel based (linear spectral unmixing, imperviousness as the complement of vegetation fraction etc.), object-oriented algorithms, and artificial neural networks. Techniques, such as data/image fusion, expert systems, and contextual classification methods, have also been explored. The majority of research efforts have been made for mapping urban landscapes at various scales and on the spatial resolution requirements of such mapping. In contrast, there is less interest in spectral and geometric properties of impervious surfaces. More researches are also needed to better understand temporal resolution, change and evolution of impervious surfaces over time, and temporal requirements for urban mapping. In the assembly modeling of complex products, it is not unusual facing an explosive growth of assembly relations, or called combination explosion. Through integrating object-oriented methods with the knowledge template based modeling, in this paper, a new methodology is proposed to deal with the complexity of the assemblies of large-scale products. As such, the templates with various assembly relations can be defined for complex products;constitutive parts or subassemblies in a product structure are defined as object classes;their features can be encapsulated, and defined or modified freely via the parameters of object classes to meet the requirements of a specific instance. The new method supports reusing knowledge and simplifying assembly modeling of complex products. In this paper, recent literatures on object-oriented methodologies and knowledge template methods for assembly modeling are reviewed, the rationales of object-oriented templates are discussed, and a method is proposed for creating assembly templates for complex products. In the case study included in this paper, the developed method has been applied to digital modeling of aero-engines, thus, validating its performance.

A novel algorithm for land use and land cover classification using RADARSAT-2 polarimetric SAR data

This study proposes a new four-component algorithm for land use and land cover (LULC) classification using RADARSAT-2 polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data. These four components are polarimetric decomposition. PolSAR interferometry, object-oriented image analysis, and decision tree algorithms. First, polarimetric decomposition can be used to support the classification of PoISAR data. It is aimed at extracting polarimetric parameters related to the physical scattering mechanisms of the observed objects. Second, PoISAR interferometry is used to extract polarimetric interferometric information to support LULC classification. Third, the main purposes of object-oriented image analysis are delineating image objects, as well as extracting various textural and spatial features from image objects to improve classification accuracy. Finally, a decision tree algorithm provides an efficient way to select features and implement classification. A comparison between the proposed method and the Wishart supervised classification which is based on the coherency matrix was made to test the performance of the proposed method. The overall accuracy of the proposed method was 86.64%, whereas that of the Wishart supervised classification was 69.66%. The kappa value of the proposed method was 0.84, much higher than that of the Wishart supervised classification, which exhibited a kappa value of 0.65. The results indicate that the proposed method exhibits much better performance than the Wishart supervised classification for LULC classification. Further investigation was carried out on the respective contribution of the four components to LULC classification using RADARSAT-2 PoISAR data, and it indicates that all the four components have important contribution to the classification. object-oriented design for LHD data acquisition using client-server model

The LHD data acquisition system handles > 600 MB data per shot. The fully distributed data processing and the object-oriented system design are the main principles of this system, its wide flexibility has been realized by introducing the object-oriented method into the data processing, in which the object sharing and class libraries will provide the unified way of data handling for the network client-server programming. The object class libraries are described in C++, and the network object sharing is provided through the commercial soft-ware named HARNESS. As for the CAMAC setup, the Java script can use the C++ class libraries and thus establishes the relationship between the object-oriented database and the WWW server. In LHD experiments, the CAMAC system and the Windows NT operating system are applied for digitizing and acquiring data. respectively. For the purpose of the LHD data acquisition. the new CAMAC handling software on Windows NT have been developed to manipulate the SCSI-connected crate controllers. The CAMAC command lists and diagnostic data classes are shared between client and server computers. A lump of the diagnostic data can be treated as part of an object by the object-oriented programming. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Modeling of photolithography process in semiconductor wafer fabrication systems using extended hybrid Petri nets

To describe a semiconductor wafer fabrication flow availably, a new modeling method of extended hybrid Petri nets （EHPNs） was proposed. To model the discrete part and continuous part of a complex photolithography process, hybrid Petri nets （HPNs） were introduced. To cope with the complexity of a photolithography process, object-oriented methods such as encapsulation and classifications were integrated with HPN models. EHPN definitions were presented on the basis of HPN models and object-oriented methods. object-oriented hybrid Petri subnet models were developed for each typical physical object and an EHPN modeling procedure steps were structured. To demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed modeling method, a real wafer photolithography case was used to illustrate the modeling procedure. dynamic modeling of a complex photolithography process effectively The modeling results indicate that the EHPNs can deal with the dynamic modeling of a complex photolithography process effectively.

The development of an object-oriented Petri net cell control model

This paper presents an object-oriented Petri net cell control (OPNCC) model for scheduling and controlling the operations of a flexible manufacturing cell. The development of the OPNCC model includes three phases: 1. Static analysis. 2. Dynamic analysis. 3. Integration. The dynamic analysis, the most important phase in developing the OPNCC model, will first construct the object-oriented Petri net (OPN) for each physical object and connect all the related ''encapsulated'' OPNs to be a complete OPN model to represent the dynamic behaviour or control logic of shop floor operations. Then, the control logic of the complete OPN model must be analysed through an object behaviour analysis, an inter-object message passing analysis and a conflict analysis. The OPNCC model not only possesses the characteristics of object-oriented method (e.g. inheritance, encapsulation and a higher degree of flexibility and reusability) and Petri nets (e.g. graphical representation and mathematical analysis capabilities), but also incorporates scheduling/dispatching knowledge in the control logic specified by the OPN model. The practical significance of the OPNCC model is that practitioners may apply it to develop both a real-time cell controller and an off-line shop floor scheduling simulator.

This study describes how a very large number of deterministic input signals for system identification may be created by object-oriented methods. The concepts of aggregation and inheritance, combined with the properties of m-sequences, are utilised to develop two new methods for the creation of pseudorandom perturbation signals with ideal spectral properties, two, three, five or seven levels and a very wide range of periods. The available signal levels ensure that the signals are suitable for both linear and non-linear system identification and the availability of a large number of signal periods ensures that the signals are suitable for both single and multi-input system identification. The methods are described in detail and illustrated by examples, together with their implementation in the open environment of an efficient, user-friendly and freely available MATLAB program which provides third-party software to complement existing MATLAB Identification Toolboxes.
