A domain-specific metamodel for multimedia processing systems

In this paper, we introduce 4MPS, a Metamodel for Multimedia Processing Systems. The goal of 4MPS is to offer a generic system metamodel that can be instantiated to describe any multimedia processing design. The metamodel combines the advantages of the object-oriented paradigm and metamodeling techniques with system engineering principles and graphical models of computation. 4MPS is based on the classification of multimedia processing objects into two main categories: Processing objects that operate on data and controls, and Data objects that passively hold media content. Processing objects encapsulate a method or algorithm. They also include support for synchronous data processing and asynchronous event-driven Controls as well as a configuration mechanism and an explicit life cycle state model. Data input to and output from Processing objects is done through Ports. Data objects offer a homogeneous interface to media data, and support for metaobject-like facilities such as reflection and serialization. The metamodel can be expressed in the language of graphical models of computation such as the Dataflow Networks and presents a comprehensive conceptual framework for media signal processing applications. 4MPS has its practical validation in several existing environments, including the author's CLAM framework.

This paper presents a new object-oriented design of software for finite element calculations. Special attention is given to coupled problems with nonlinear materials. Fundamental ideas of object-oriented design, especially high cohesion, low coupling and encapsulation of classes, are strictly taken into account. The concept is guided by the idea to reuse as many parts as possible, The hierachy of classes for the elements, materials and held problems can be extended easily by specialization.

In the past decade, new communication schemes have been designed and retrofitted into substations by utilities to integrate data from relays and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). The idea of standardizing the language of communication between IEDs;has evolved as the key for the advancement of connectivity and interoperability within a SA system. The most important outcome of this standardization process has been the IEC 61850 standard. IEC 61850 is an abstract application layer protocol aimed at providing interoperability between a variety of substation and feeder devices by describing how devices are to communicate in a substation as well as the related system requirements. In this paper, the authors describe the standard's application-view model and present the use of 00 methodology and techniques for the modelling and implementation of the Data and Dataset application-view object models of the standard. The target audience for this paper includes anyone interested in getting an overview of the IEC 61850 international standard, and understanding how the object-oriented models proposed in the standard standardize the data found in IEDs and the communication of this date between substation devices.

Operation management in reconfigurable manufacturing systems: Reconfiguration for error handling

Reconfigurable manufacturing systems offer quick adjustment of production capacity and functionality in response to unpredictable market changes as being systems designed at the outset for rapid change in system configuration, its machines and controls. During the production process, out-of-ordinary events occur dynamically and unpredictably both at the system (machine breakdowns, change in job's priorities, etc.) and at the cell level (tool failures, robot collisions, etc.). Such exceptions interrupt the production process by causing errors in the schedule plan (system level) or in the task plan (cell level). Error handling is the policy meant for reacting to errors caused by the occurrence of out-of-ordinary events. The reconfiguration ability turns out to be the new technological factor enabling new strategies to handle out-of-ordinary events of the production process. Both economic and performance aspects need to be considered in order to make a decision in support of particular error handling policies such as using reconfiguration. This paper, starting from a simulation case study, highlights advantage of using reconfiguration for error handling. Authors propose an object-oriented high-level control structure for real-time error handling, which integrates the new reconfiguration for error handling technology with the existing reactive scheduling system. This article describes how features of event tree analysis and Monte Carlo-based discrete event simulation can be combined with concepts from object-oriented analysis to develop a new risk assessment methodology, with some of the best features of each. The resultant object-based event scenario tree (OBEST) methodology enables an analyst to rapidly construct realistic models for scenarios for which an a priori discovery of event ordering is either cumbersome or impossible. Each scenario produced by OBEST is automatically associated with a likelihood estimate because probabilistic branching is integral to the object model definition. The OBEST methodology is then applied to an aviation safety problem that considers mechanisms by which an aircraft might become involved in a runway incursion incident. The resulting OBEST model demonstrates how a close link between human reliability analysis and probabilistic risk assessment methods can provide important insights into aviation safety phenomenology.

Managing the network state evolution over time using CORBA environment

This paper proposes a CORBA-based framework for managing the network state evolution over time. This framework is based on the concept of CORBA temporal agents, capable of managing the past and current behavior of network resources. Managed objects use specific time attributes for representing how their values are evolving in time. Moreover, specially designed operations (services) enable users to exploit the temporal dimension of management information in order to understand the past, control the present, and thus even predict the future of managed objects. The management environment is designed in order to provide coexistence and interoperability with existing management platforms.

On the relationship of class stability and maintainability

Maintainability is an essential software quality attribute as software maintenance is a costly process. ISO 9126 characterised maintainability with five sub-characteristics, one of which is stability. Unstable software may lead to high maintenance cost and effort. Classes in object-oriented systems form the basic elements of the software architecture;hence, stable classes may contribute to reducing the software maintenance cost and effort. In this study, the author conducts an empirical study to evaluate the relationship between class stability and maintainability. The author correlates class stability with maintainability effort measured by the number of hours spent on maintenance activities and by the line of code changes. Results show that classes with higher values of stability measured by the class stability metric (CSM) are associated with a lower value of perfective maintenance effort measured by hours. CSM also correlated with all types of maintenance (corrective, adaptive and perfective) if measured for the cumulatively combined system classes in all iterations rather than per iteration. The author also found that none of the stability metrics show a relationship with maintainability when measured by number of line of code changes.

Integrated searching in Taiwan: the LIPS-DOI experiment

Purpose-There is an active effort by major libraries in Taiwan to offer integrated searching as part of their information services. The purpose of this paper is to report a low-cost and high-flexibility system, (LIPS-DOI), which can carry out integrated searching with respect to resource management. Design/methodology/approach-The paper first reviews the related techniques and then designs an integrated search system based on the concept of resources management. The reported system, (LIPS-DOI), is composed of three modules: enumeration module, description module, and resolution module. The various digital contents are first imported into (LIPS-DOI) and thereafter the system is put into operation. Findings-A low-cost and high-flexibility system for integrated searching can be implemented and put into operation. In addition to digital objects, physical objects could also be managed and searched in the proposed (LIPS-DOI) system. This system will redirect users to the original system in which these physical objects reside. Research limitations/implications-Due to the nature of management, registered users have to manage their own objects using the features provided by (LIPS-DOI). Originality/value-Such a system will empower library end users to find materials of mixed formats residing in disparate locations from a single interface. It was also designed with an eye toward integration with its DOI counterpart in the future.
